I asked a number of general managers yesterday: How will cross-border trades work in this coming hockey season? No one had a definitive answer but all figured there would be some form of quarantining involved with bringing a U.S. player to Canada in the NHL season. Which may mean fewer trades than usual, even with the season shortened

I don’t understand why so many people are trying to find a separate rink for the Canucks to play in. I’m sure they can share the same rink in Calgary or Edmonton, schedule home game times and dates around each other.
We had 10 teams playing out of the same rinks in Edmonton and Toronto in the summer, and it worked fine.

I somewhat understand the hold out, as the start date is within 2 weeks of Christmas and New Years, and I’m sure public health officials are anticipating the worst. However, with the tight controls on the group, access to testing, in house medical crew, access to whole planes, and entire hotel room floors... letting these guys play in empty buildings doesn’t seem like a high risk activity to me. It’s “controlled risk” at worst.

In the event a NHL team has to temporarily relocate this season, players are entitled to a hotel room for them and their family; rental car and parking; and per diem even while at "home."
If relocation lasts more than 28 days, additional benefits will be negotiated.

I have wanted this for so long.
I am sure the US Navy has a decommissioned Aircraft Carrier or two lying around and bunch of Sailors in need of Quarantine.
Let the NHL Ice guys build a rink on the deck and just go town!
They might need to build a smaller ancillary arena at the far end to accommodate the Monkey vs. Hobo knife fights that tend to be the preferred entertainment on the High Seas of International Waters.
But it could be done! We have the resources! We have the skills!
You could charge a fortune for NHL Game Centre if I'm watching a game on an aircraft carrier every couple of days!

#NHL players who are deemed by medical staff to "be at substantial risk of developing a serious illness as a result of novel coronavirus" will be paid for the 2020-21 season.
Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Regarding #NHL players opting out from 2020-21: League "may investigate any circumstance ... that these provisions were intentionally used to, or had the effective of, circumventing the CBA" for salary cap purposes.

An interesting twist on the expansion draft for @SeattleKraken: NHL teams submit their protection lists at 5 p.m. ET on July 17, and Seattle can start interviewing players left unprotected at 10 a.m. on July 18.
The Kraken have to finalize their picks by 10 a.m. on July 21.
Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Clarification: This applies to RFA's and UFA's left unprotected. Those players can be signed by Seattle before the July 21 expansion draft, which would then have them be designated the selection from their former club.
Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The entry-level slide threshold for teenagers drops to seven games in 2021, as @FriedgeHNIC reported, while 27 games on the roster becomes what a skater needs to earn an accrued season towards unrestricted free agency.

Is it 4 teams per division make the playoffs or is there some wildcard overlaps possible?

doesn't sound like wild cards
Quote:
Each team in the East, Central and West divisions will play every other team in its division eight times while each team in the North Division will play every other team in its division nine or 10 times.
The top four teams in each division will qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with intradivisional play in the first two rounds (#1 vs. #4; #2 vs. #3). The four teams that advance to the Semifinal Round would be seeded by their regular season points total, with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 4 seed in one series and the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds meeting in the other.

One ####ty team will make the playoffs in the west div
Its going to be hard to hand out NHL awards this season...lot of good goal tending in the North Div I think McD will be hard pressed, Nate is going to light up some of those #### teams
going to be a really disappointed team in the EAST

It's going to be hilarious when the oilers miss their greater than 50/50 chance of making the playoffs.

So the Flames have $223,334 in projected cap space.
How would signing another depth D (like Hamonic, Bowey, Koekoek, etc) to be placed on the taxi squad work? I believe you can fully bury a salary of $1,075,000 or less.
Seems like a chance to add an extra depth piece now as opposed to trading a 3rd-5th pick later for one at the deadline.
Petrovic and Yelesin all currently options for the taxi D I would guess.

Yeah they could sign a depth D and stow them in the taxi squad like that (assuming they clear waivers)
Another question to ask is if the taxi squad can travel and practice with the team does it even make sense to carry more than 20 people on the NHL roster?
Because there are potential cap savings that could make a difference at the trade deadline by carrying 20 instead of 22 or 23.
The risk of only carrying 20 is that if there is a rash of injuries that even depletes the taxi squad, a team like the Flames may be in trouble as they would have to wait for players from Stockton to clear Canadian quarantine procedures before replenishing the taxi squad.
Also it seems less likely we will see PTOs this year. With a cap on the number of players that can attend training cap (except for goalies) and no exhibition games before the season starts, the only purpose of a PTO is to practice with a team. In standard years at least a PTO gave you some hope of exposure for a contract.
