Probably!

They should have just left well enough alone, there was nothing wrong with the old wordmark. But somebody's bright idea was to commission a study about it: https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/936e...rchsummary.pdf

"People very much liked the cursive style, feeling that it displayed Alberta as open, friendly, confident and positive. There was a sense that this icon connected with the history of Alberta, but more persuasively with a future orientation, and this balance was comfortable for people. It evoked an Alberta that is increasingly dynamic, diverse, young, and contemporary."

Pff, whatever.

Combine that with an era when a new plate was free with every registration if you asked for it.

Result: A wall full of license plates in my garage, and no worry about ever not having a 6 character plate.
I parked in the Math Sciences my final 2 years without paying. Best lot on campus.
All the profs would give me dirtiest looks when I got out of my car.

I like it. but if you're still calling it wild rose country there should be a wild rose on the plate, not a sheaf of wheat.
maybe just ditch the phrase, and then you have a winner.

Photo realistic plates are ugly. Much prefer abstract geometry. Also the w wheat sheaves has been Saskatchewan’s plate forever so to me creates confusion even with the mountains in the background.

The best plate was from the last license plate thread with the stampede horse, and oil Derek, the drumheller dinosaur and a fireball.

Fun fact, last time they looked at new plates one of the reasons they backed off is Rod Love was lobbying for a plate manufacturer.

I didn't think BC plates were that cluttered? I like the simplicity of these honestly.

Can we just go back to the black and yellow? I think those were great.

No. They were ugly. Collectors literally throw them away.

Plus renewing your driver's license every 5 years. New photo must be done in person.

Maybe it's just me, but the current scheme is boring. I don't think we need a super fancy plate with all kinds of imagery though.

These are the best examples from the past 50 years (IMO):

I like this one too (even though it vaguely resembles Oilers colours):

It isn't rocket science. The priorities should be simplicity, legibility (especially in driving conditions), and distinctive.

I like my Flames one, but I hear from a lot of people that they look terrible. I would like a new base plate as we've had the same one for 36 years.

I think we all agree that the worst iteration is the Oilers plate. I'm not even being a pure homer with that; it's just terrible IMO.

But year, maybe a new simple plate would be a good idea.

And those same people who hate the Flames plate love the Oiler one. Maybe they just hate the team. I don't hate the Oilers like most on this board, but I don't like the plate. The best one we have is the Support the Troops plate.

The regular BC ones aren't that cluttered however the BC Parks ones can be a little busy. I really like them and their purpose but can see why some do not.

Montana, takes it to a whole new level. For a population about the same as Manitoba it's impressive the amount of customization they have. I count 14 separate categories of designs and you have multiple choices within each category. I'd love it if Alberta did something like this.
