You're not the only one. Seems silly to me as well.

Yes it has nothing to do with the thickness of the plate, it’s the laziness of disposing and discarding of an 6 character plate. Had one of mine that I move to the next vehicle since 98 and other one since 07. Have a plate out of circulation since 1998 that I got in 1994 as well in case I ever do get some third vehicle.
587, 825 and apparently next year 368 prefix numbers are for those who used to use pagers to transact business, talk only prepaid phones and/or burner phones.

Six character plate AND the old Alberta logo on top.
Plate with new Alberta logo script for reference.

When attending the U of C, I realized the majority of businesses in the area (and the University themselves) were nice guys and would give you one warning for parking illegally before giving you a ticket.
Combine that with an era when a new plate was free with every registration if you asked for it.
Result: A wall full of license plates in my garage, and no worry about ever not having a 6 character plate.

^^^ this. I actually struggled when I got a Flames plate because I didn't want to give up my 6-character OG status. I mean, I guess technically the new plate is still 6 characters but it's not the same...

Same. I am pretty sure I read that you can renew online as long as your plates aren’t expired by over 2 months.
You can use the email they send you as demonstration of registration as necessitated

Still use the same license plate from when I bought my first car back in 2001. 6 characters, old font, and it has every renewal sticker on it from 2001. I just stick the new ones on top of the old ones. There will be 20 of them this summer! Never had a problem adhering them or having them fall off.

My favourite is the people who don’t think they can cover up an outdated sticker so they put it in the general vicinity despite clear instructions.

Same. Still running my original plate from my first vehicle in 1989.

Must say I'm disappointed at no new design. We've had this design forever and it's a bit lame compared to what you can get in other jurisdictions. Sure it's a small thing, but it would have been nice to have a new design and/or more affinity plate options.

When I moved here from Winnipeg, the sticker situation was weird to me.
Manitoba: Month sticker on bottom left side, Year sticker on bottom right side.
So that's what I did, and then I got home and my aunt took one look at it and said it was wrong and I had to carefully remove it and re-apply.
Alberta: Month sticker on the upper left side (so you can't see it as it's obscured by most rear bumper or decklid overhangs), and Year stickers alternating left and right (odd and even, apparently).
Having stickers on number plates to validate registration back then was idiotic and outdated. What I also think is outdated is that you have to carry the paper copy of your registration with you (and being ticketed if you fail to produce it). What information does running one's plate return if not the registration?

It's getting old enough to be cool again. BC's license plates are so god awful busy, I appreciate we have kept it simple at least.

Same plate since 97. I’ve been buying 2 years at a time now (which you need to go in for) and just this year bought a one year 21 as the left corner pile was getting a little large and I though I’d balance it out. Plus I liked to look of 2021 now with the opposite corner stickers.

I would like a new design, but also appreciate that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But as in the first quote, there is something broken with it that the font design aren't compatible. They've could've at least change the font for the slogan, or put something else there.

Places charge for replacement stickers? Mine fell off, the lady at the registry I was at gave me a new one for nothing.

Yes, but it’ll be license plate sized and you need to put a sticker on it every year for $85.

I'm sure it was someone who gave a lot of money to the Alberta PC party about 10 years ago.
