This point alone makes iggy_oi's entire argument feable. Season tickets alone make up more than 2/3s of all seats, league wide.

Suggesting 1/3 of seats are given away each night implies between 5,000 and 6,000 seats per night. That might be true for some games in FLA and PHX, but it literally never happens in the vast majority of arenas. Not even close. Ever. Never mind every night.

In my opinion I had to run it down to between 25 and 30% of tickets given away for free to approach the numbers you are suggesting.

You've wanted fact from me ... do you have a link suggesting the league is approaching the giving away of 1 in 3 tickets?

Your math does not take into account that the league would deduct direct costs which would be a significant amount of cash. That is the first and most glaring problem with your math.

The American system is based on having money for treatment. They aren’t taking the spot of any Canadians in line. Let them buy their own from the USA to protect their investment.

Vaccinations are free in the US. It would be absolutely outrageous if the NHL were to somehow get their hands on shipments of the vaccine.

Now I won’t argue that pro athletes deserve to be somewhere in the line of priority. Their job makes it impossible to social distance and they obviously bring joy to many people.

The NHL is interested in securing vaccine when and if it’s available for private purchase.

Is it at this point? — no.

They won’t be the only private organization doing this and anyone surprised should be reminded of the power and pressure of the almighty dollar. If the financial benefit outweighs the negative media relations it will be done. All in all, it’s still people and them being taken out of the main line shortens it for some of the rest of us, however minuscule.

As long as the health care workers and the most vulnerable who are willing and able to get the vaccine get theirs, then I don't see a problem with sports teams who are going to travel being next up. Vaccination and really all COVID mitigation strategies are much more about the macro strategy than the individuals. Getting the vaccine in as many people as they can to start slowing the spread is what really matters.

Going back to the discussion about the new TV deal, ESPN just signed a 10-year deal with the SEC worth $300 million per year. A massive increase from what CBS was paying ($55 million).

I feel like the new NHL deal will be split among two or three networks and be worth $800 million to $1 billion per year. One thing that really makes it valuable is the streaming rights. NHL.TV rights in the US are also up (currently owned by Disney). That was previously worth $100 million a year. The previous Disney relationship on that could be a gateway to ESPN getting that package. And with that said, I think other networks might even offer more than ESPN for the whole package. NHL Hockey on Peacock or FOX NOW would be enticing to those companies.

I wonder if DAZN takes a run at the NHL rights (albeit internationally as Rogers has that locked down here). I recall hearing they weren't doing so hot but pretty sure they still have big backing.
