Also, Blasty makes for a hilarious Covid face mask. It’s quite fitting, and my best purchase of 2020.

I think there would have been a lot more love for flaming snot horse (which is the true nickname, not sure where "Blasty" came from) had it not been the team's road jersey. It works a lot better as a uniform that is only worn 2-4 times a season.
Making a gimmicky third jersey - that is not even red - into a primary uniform was one of the dumbest marketing decisions the Flames have ever made.

I am not surprised Blasty is so popular. There is a specific generation of fans who hate that jersey, and that is people who were mature when the Flames had all their 1980s and early 90s success.
Associating the jersey with a lack of success is not something I can do, indeed for some of us the Flames were their most 'successful' when the jersey was still in rotation (2004-06), before then I was too young to really care about the Flames at all.

I think this hits the nail on the head.
I can tell you that as an ardent Flames fan when the Blasty jersey was released - and throughout the logo's entire tenure until 2003 - it was painful to be a Flames fan. I don't know what it's like now, but back in the latter 90s, wearing Flames gear to junior high or high school would brand you as super lame. Super, super, lame.
Beyond the association of that uniform with the worst period in Flames history is the fact that it was - itself - a product of desperation: an effort to repackage an awful product using a black uniform playbook that was relied upon heavily by other teams in the 90s. It's actually amazing they didn't call the logo "The Extreme C Stallion" and didn't partner with Doritos to market it.
Younger fans have the freedom to look at the uniforms and the logo itself in a somewhat more objective manner, as they don't have these associations. For those of us who suffered through 1998 to 2003 as mature fans of the team simply aren't so lucky.
That's why I was hopeful they'd really mix the logo up this time around - it might have given me a chance to like it, instead of having it trigger my amygdala into screaming "they may never win again!"

In 1999, I was living in Halifax, getting ready to start grade 7. My favorite computer game was NHL 2000 - a young Chris Pronger on the cover.
I found out we were moving back to Alberta (left Edmonton six years earlier to come out east) and Calgary specifically. The first thing I did was stack the Flames.
Paul Kariya scored 70 goals - I changed his number to 8 after learning Lanny MacDonald had his 9 retired.
Nik Lidstrom anchored the blue line. And Blasty, more often than not, was the jersey play.
Imagine my surprise to discover how many people in this town had no love for the Rapidash whatsoever.
NHL 2000 was a fun game. First time they ever had a designated “big deke” button.

I didn't claim to "really like" the '03 "Black C" jersey, I said it was a design hit. It was widely lauded as a vast improvement over the black jerseys. The red and white jerseys would have been improved by removing "Blasty" from the shoulders, and even the Flames marketing guys figured that out eventually, except they doubled down with dumb shoulder patches by picking the Canadian and Albertan flags instead of just eliminating shoulder patches entirely.

I know people aged 5 to 50 that all like the jersey and are fans of both this jersey design and the original jersey. Feedback around the internet from both Flames fans, and from fans of other teams was overwhelming positive about the return of that logo.
|
"Feedback around the internet" is the least reliable metric one could use. And the most ardent supporters of the Islanders "fishstick" jerseys are fans of other teams, so even if "Blasty" is popular with other fan bases it's not an objective reflection of how good or bad it really is.

Feedback around the internet is a vastly improved metric over "I don't personally know anyone!"
Blasty is popular. It's popular here. It's popular across the internet. And at the end of the day, jersey sales will indicate how popular it is with the public at large. If you don't like it, fine, don't buy it, but plenty of people do like it and plenty of people will buy it.
Trying to make this an objective thing, outside of a joke, is just silly. Whether people like it or not is subjective if we're going to be honest, and the roundabout arguments of whether it's "good" or "bad" should always be taken in jest, or at least taken as meaningless subjective opinion.
If we should assume Austin is joking, we should assume you're joking. Both takes have equal standing, all things considered.

I voted no, but I am not necessarily unhappy... just not happy.
But I get it. It has appeal to some people and if there was a year that additional revenue from jersey sales is needed, it's this year.
I would have loved to have seen something different though.
I was fooling around with the CCM creator using a phoenix concept. Not sure if I like them (I am no artist), but I think there would be potential.

What? I didn't know this. Who ran CP?
Are any of the old timers still divided between OG CPers and OG FOIers?

76% like it as of now, and that's with CP seeming to be more curmudgeonly towards it than other places (our older demographic, I guess?).

It is the nature of the internet that people who like something don't use as many words as people do don't like something.

I like the new Blasty jersey, and also quite like the Blasty logo itself. This is coming from a fan who was in high school when we won the cup in 89 so some of us old folk like it
My issue is more with the recent fit of the jerseys, they seem to fit horribly for the most part with the flaming C hanging down way too low. Great if you're on the ice in pads, but if you're in the stands with no pads I hate the fit. I'll reserve final judgement until I can go try one on.

There's no "I'm indifferent to the jersey but the more I hear or see the word 'Blasty', the more I hate the jersey" option, so I didn't vote.

Is there a confirmed origin as to who or when the name “Blasty” was coined? I did a search on CP but it doesn’t seem to want to give me anything prior to 2019.
It was always the “horsehead” or “snothorse” to me...

Was the "Blasty" name even used when it first came out? I don't recall ever hearing it until recently, but I may have not been paying attention.
For the record, if it makes other people happy, then I am happy too. I don't want to rain on the parade or anything like that.

Yeah, it's weird how people are acting like everyone has been calling it "Blasty" for years when that term seemingly only appeared about a year ago.

Apparently there was some story about a reporter or someone using it years ago and therefore it was the actual nickname for it. But I too had only ever heard it referred to as snotnose or horsehead until a year or so ago.

If people are looking to buy the jersey there is a 35% off coupon for Flames Season Ticket holders to use Flamesport.com floating around out there that ends tomorrow.
Ask a friend that's a season ticket holder.

Changing its nickname from Snothorse to Blasty almost singlehandedly made the jersey cooler.
I always thought it was an ok design, not great. Now that our primary jerseys are so good, I'm much more open to experimental 3rds/4ths etc.

And this is the key with this logo and jersey.
This jersey as a third to the pedestal jerseys: Good and actually a bit of an improvement since the Pedestal jerseys were that bad.
This jersey as our full time dark jersey: Very bad. Flames need to have a red jersey and Flaming C needs to always be the primary logo.
This jersey as a third to the very strong Black C and White jerseys from 03 - 06: Very Good and was a really nice set that had consistent striping and was great all around.
That's the perfect spot for this logo and jersey. As a more fun 3rd/4th jersey that can be used a couple of times per year.
