That’s how I see it at this point in time how about you guys?
Gaudreau - Backlund - Lindholm (Give the top line a different look/identity)
Tkachuk - Monahan - Mangiapane (Mary Tyler Moore line)
Lucic - Bennett - Dube (Yup)
Nordstrom - Ryan - Gawdin (Gawdin has earned it)
Robinson

Hanifin - Andersson (time for the kids gloves to come off)
Giordano - Kylington (fewer minutes for Gio, high expectations for Kylington)
Valimaki - Tanev (Hughes treatment)
Petrovic

Markstrom
Rittich

I like it - have mentioned in the past a Gaudreau - Backlund - Lindholm line comparing it to a Marchand - Bergeron - Pasternak line of sorts but obviously not as good as Boston’s top line.

I like it HL!!!

To start the playoffs, Joakim Nordstrom decided he was going to hit anything that moves.

Leading all Bruins in hits (31 through 8 games) despite not being the biggest guy, Nordstrom has added some much needed sandpaper to the B’s bottom six.

However Nordstrom’s contribution to the team’s success doesn’t stop with his increased aggression, as he’s also been huge for the Bruins in his own end.

Nordstrom leads all Bruins forwards in shots blocked so far, has won a ton of puck battles in the corner, and has put in some solid minutes on the PK, helping Boston improve their kill rate steadily as the playoffs have gone on.

While blocked shots and hits may not be great metrics when considering possession, they served their purpose in regard to Nordstrom’s role on the team.
Ricardodw is going to love him!

I really like these top two line combinations.

Johnny needs to play with two other guys who can play with the puck on their stick in the offensive zone. They need to cycle the puck and protect it while Johnny disappears in coverage; Gaudreau may not be as explosive as he was a couple years ago, but his edge work is still among the tops in the league. He changes direction as well as anyone in the game. They can’t touch him when he doesn’t have the puck, so it’s on the coaches to find ways to scheme him open like he’s a wide receiver. Lindholm and Backlund are also our two best defensive forwards, so that might work out better than having Lindholm cover for the defensive miscues of two players.

Tkachuk and Mangiapane will drag Monahan into the fight. Sean was as physical this post season as I’ve ever seen him, and it still wasn’t nearly enough. Playing with a couple guys who’ll start some #### will help him. The hockey sense, the passing, the finish, all of that is elite. Tkachuk is really good defensively, and I don’t think Mangiapane hurts you either. A lack of foot speed may be concerning - dump it in, have Mangiapane go get it, cycle to Tkachuk, centre to Monahan, play the song.

Now the two best offensive players on the team are each the third-best defensive player on their respective lines. Everyone still gets to play with high skill players. Monahan is no longer constantly deferring to Gaudreau, and Gaudreau isn’t getting mauled as often because he’s not trying to skate through the entire opposition.

Throw everyone together on the power play, but 5v5, I don’t think Monahan/Gaudreau+ and Tkachuk/Backlund+ give the Flames the best chance to win.

Interesting!

Except Gaudreau’s greatest assets are supposed to be his creativity and playmaking ability! Who does it better than him...when he is in the right mindset and willing to pay the price?

Not many....he needs to be more courageous in traffic, IMO. He has shown he is more than capable.

Pretty sure you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Who says he can’t be creative and make plays without the puck?

It’s not that I don’t think he has the ability, he clearly does.

But he’s also 5 foot 2 and weighs 115 lbs in the National Hockey League. As soon as he touches the puck, some gorilla comes over to slash him in the hands or back, and he isn’t large enough or strong enough to protect the puck with his body.

The nature of the sport is such that you can’t really say “don’t carry the puck, Johnny”; he goes where the puck is going to be, it’s gonna be on his stick more than not.

But you can draw up schemes to reduce the amount of time Gaudreau spends carrying the puck 5v5. On the power play, who cares - with the extra space, let him hold the biscuit for the whole two minutes if he wants.

Johnny is as dynamic a player as you could ask for, and it’s incumbent on the coaches to be creative and take full advantage of him.

I don’t think they’ve done that the last 18 months, and I know it’s on Johnny as well. We’ve just spent two months talking about trading the guy, it’s certainly worth considering that he’s not being used correctly.

Simply handing him the puck and saying “go get em, tiger,” doesn’t seem to be doing it.

I guess we will agree to disagree.

A 100 games ago he was just fine being the QB 5v 5. Something happened.

You think it is a coaching problem, I think it is a player’s courage problem.

And Y’know what’s awesome? We may both be right.

Something has definitely happened, and it happened coming out of the All Star Break in 2019.
