That depends on contract. Can you get Laine signed for less than Johnnys cap hit? What about term? Term is the gamble with him right?

Question is, would the Jets take Johnny for Laine.

How is Kylington not ready for regular top 6 mins? He’s basically been doing it for the last couple seasons until trade deadline acquisitions push him out of the lineup.

He can’t be sent down without waivers so how is he supposed to improve while in the press box?

It’s time to play him in the top 6 and keep him there. I think it would also be wise to start giving him looks on the PP.

Oh, you mean button hook at the top of the circle and hope there is a streaking forward entering the zone at the top of his button?

Or short side top corner shot attempt that misses the net and exits the zone?

I keep seeing proposals for prominent RHD like this. People realize we have our top 2 RHD in place with the Tanev signing, right? There’s definitely no way we have Anderson back to the third pair.

If RHD are being added it’s of the 6/7 or PTO variety. Much more attention should go towards upgrading our forward group right now, IMO.

Good questions, he is clearly going to have to earn his ice time.

I doubt he is waived, but I don't see him as a lock to be top 6.

Last season, he was not consistent enough to be a regular dman

He was viewed as the 7th dman,

I would take Laine for Johnny because they are both one-dimensional but I think Laine has more potential within that dimension. And he's a finisher. But i don't think the Jets do it. They don't need another player like Johnny.

So with the Mangiapane signing, and knowing that Kylington likely gets $700-750k:
 Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
 Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
 M. Lucic - S. Bennett - D. Dube
 Z. Rinaldo - D. Ryan - Gawdin

 Robinson

 Giordano - Andersson
 Hanifin - Tanev
 Valimaki - Kylington

 Petrovic

 Markstrom
 Rittich

$435,834 cap space remaining with just a 22 man roster

Definitely not much can be done unless they trade a bigger ticket guy with a smaller amount of cap coming back in the trade.

Yeah, our 4th line needs a lot of work. Could you imagine having a long-term injury that necessitates moving someone like Rinaldo or Robinson onto the 3rd line?
Some PTOs will surely be handed out at camp but at the moment it looks like there's just no way you can go into the season without shedding some cap space.

I would hope and expect some vets on PTOs at camp to push those guys off the roster.

There is also a chance that some young players surprise at camp and earn a roster spot or two. Guys that are playing right now will be in game shape and may force their way onto the roster. Pelletier, Pospisil, Zavgorodniy, Tuulola for example.

Rinaldo is a little underrated here.

Rinaldo is surprisingly ok as 4th line filler sometimes, but he's not someone I want in the lineup every night.

Agreed, he is likely the 13th or 14th forward.

Definitely not an every day roster player.

True but you are also bringing in another player to fill his role at a cheaper contract. I like Ryan but if we are keeping him then our roster is already set. Not sure I like the looks of the roster right now

I agree that I don't want Rinaldo in a position to be in the line up every night, or being bumped up to the 3rd line in case of injuries. I highly doubt that'll be the case though.

Lots of vet UFA forwards of all shapes, sizes, ages and styles still kicking around out there and will have to settle for league minimum contracts or PTO's.

When Kylington was drafted the talk was about the elite skating ability. Actually that was said about Hanifin as well.

I don't understand why this extremely valuable trait is not being maximized in a CGY lineup where speed isn't the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about them.

Not only do you put it (guys who can really skate) the lineup but you have to encourage it's use and live with some of the cons that come with it.

CGY needs to find a way to back teams off - get some easy controlled entries. To get teams to gameplan against that speed and then take advantage of how they need to defend against CGY.

Give the green light to these guys! Have them jump up constantly to lead the rush or give the rush that dangerous speed element. Just look at the talents your roster has and optimize/maximize those talents.

I don't want to see any more coaches who foist a style of play on a team and demands the team fit to it (Gulutzan) instead of tailoring a style of play based on what you got.

I like Ward but we haven't seen his vision or style of play - he just adjusted to mid season change then tweaked things for playoffs. I DO NOT want to see some defensive style that is all about packing it in - don't try and emulate DAL.

Push the pace.
