If there was ever indication from Hall's camp that he wanted to be a Flame, I'm sure the Flames could have found the space. It wouldn't have signed Tanev in the first place.

I can't see Hall being here when we have Gaudreau and Tkachuk as our top 2 LWs. Till one of them leaves, I can't see the Flames pursuing him.
If it's about cap space.. I think when we spent the money on Markstrom, is when we were out on a chance of signing Hall. Tanev is a lateral move for losing Brodie. Personally I liked Toffoli since he was playing for the Kings, and he is a natural RW.

Calgary isn't his home no matter how many people say it is. He was a kid here but his family moved to Kingston when he was 13.

Thats my view too. They have a legit #1 Goaltender now, probably the first time Johnny/Mony ever had one on the Flames.
Lets give them a go and see what happens.

This is what I'm thinking. Teams he wanted to go to couldn't offer a good deal so he gives it a year for some cap to clear up. He has total control of who he can be traded to so he can still be moved at the deadline and signed long term. If anything he probably chose a team most likely to move him late in the season.

That's what I was thinking. Signing Leino wasn't big, even though his contract was.

How many chances do they get? Granted I’m pretty sure that’s now the plan .

I think he figures that the time it will take for the team or teams that are on his radar this offseason, to shed cap space, was too tight for this season with Covid etc, but will be able to clear the books for next year.

Not a bad option for Hall, considering how tight the market w, and the fact that he couldn't get the deal he wanted.
Great for Buffalo, as they get to try him out for a year, and if they aren't going to the playoffs, trade him.
He gets control of where he is traded.

Not shocking ... what could we have offered him that was better? We dont have 8 mil in cap space so it was Hall or Markstrom.... I can think of who fills a bigger hole

Injury is a risk, for sure.
You don’t think next summer will be better from a money standpoint? A full season ahead with the pandemic likely behind us? There’s going to be a lot more certainty, surely. It’s a bet but I think it’s a smart bet to make on yourself, better than wussing out and signing a long term contract millions below what you could get in a normal year in the middle of an unprecedented interruption.

So, you just wanted to bitch again about the Tanev contract, even though you readily admit that it didn't stop us from signing him.

Is there a bookie who had Sabres as the worst odds of any team of getting him? I’m guessing he put a boatload of money on Buffalo before he signed that contract to supplement his lost income.

This comes up every time a one-year deal is signed or discussed. Serious question: when is the last time a 28 year old had a career ending, or career altering injury? Once a decade maybe?

Also I bet most teams would take a flyer on Hall in the summer with a decent pay day if he did get injured this year baring its a career ending one. We all know what he brings to the table and he's not going to have any issue attracting a team paying him big money.

I think this just shows why cap space is so valuable.
Especially once it's scarce.

I think "odds" are out the window in this NHL pandemic off season. Also probably teams with little to no cap space had the least odds of landing him. Buffalo wasn't one of them.
