Looking at Capfriendly, it says we have $5.7M in space currently.
Domingue down in the AHL, but Robinson / Rinaldo / Petrovic up leaves $4.3M.
So spitballing 2 years @ $2.5M for Mangi and 2 years @ $900k for Kylington.
$900k in cap space.

Lol, if that dimension is being puck dominant in all three zones, then yes, he is one dimensional.

Barrie took a one year deal, potentially for a bit less than he was offered for a multi year deal. But there is no way he turned down $6m.
Do you think he turned down a bunch of money to “pad his pp stats” in Edmonton, then fool one of the general managers into signing him to a huge contract because he had inflated pp points with McDavid???
GM’s are not that easily fooled. Sorry.

Barrie would also be taking the risk of injury, or having a consecutive stop in a row where things didn't work out, both of which would further reduce his appeal league-wide.

Yeah, he plays hard in each zone. He is limited a little by his size and gets handled physically sometimes, but he still goes into the dirty areas. He has been improving a lot as well, so I don't think we have seen his full potential yet.
If he could build up his core, he could be a Gelinas type of player.

This is what happens when we give too much term to guys that are trending down. When you look at the body of work that Treliving has done, this is the one thing that has held the team back on so many levels. Issues from cap space, uninspired play, taking up a roster spot that could be used for a developing player. What's worrisome is we are still doing it.

About 60 percent of teams have made those mistakes with contracts still on their books or buyouts.
Neal was going to be the scoring winner we needed. That’s why I’m scared shirtless of this Hoffman or Tofolli talk.

Isn't Toffoli like 4 years younger than when we signed Neal? He has some.meat left on the bone. And Neal .....man Neal was signed specifically because he was an automatic 20 goals. Nobody knew what happened was gonna happen. Nobody. And if they said they did, they're liars.

Toffoli is the addition I’m leaning towards more and more though if we were able to add Hall and flip Gaudreau for a Konecny that would be unreal as well. I do want to see us bolster the RH shot in the top 6 and I think Toffoli would work well with Gaudreau and Monahan.

Hoffman does have a big Neal vibe to him; however, he does have a clear skill that should guarantee that he at least puts up points, he has an elite shot and one timer. As for the other parts of his game, yea there are a lot of similarities to Neal.
Toffoli on the other hand developed under Darryl Sutter and was a contributor to one of their two cups so he knows how to play “the right way”.
Toffoli is the much safer player to go after.

Hoffman is also a really good skater which no one said about Neal even when he was good. That said, he sucks defensively. Plus he’s a LHS though he plays RW.
Toffoli is a harder worker, RHS and better defensively. Probably cheaper too.

If I recall there were some at the time concerned about the Neal signing, but having the same situation play out with Brouwer and Neal was a repeat of the same mistake. Flames scouts get paid to do the job!
That Neal signing is the reason we are paying a 3 liner top line money that could be used to bring in another high profile player.
I think Tanev will be a good addition hopefully for the full length of the contract and the Goaltending looking solid.

I didn't even realize until free agency began that Toffoli wasn't signed.
I seem to recall the Canucks were pretty confident that he would sign an extension when they traded for him.

I don't think Toffoli is the smartest of ideas. Next summer we have Valimaki, Dube and Bennett up for new contracts, with any luck 2 of the 3 will be in line for pretty good raises and the only UFAs coming off the books are Ryan and Rittich. I think it would be more prudent to sign someone to a low risk-high reward, 1 year deal to hopefully play in our top 9. Kovalchuk, Galchenyuk, Haula, Brassard, Leivo and Grabner come to mind. Maybe even Vesey.
For the 4th line and extra forward slot (should we trade Ryan), I would look at Brad Richardson, Lukas Wallmark, Brian Boyle, Matt Martin.
For the extra D spot, I am good with Prout, Stone, Rutta, Engelland, Weber... and I'm a sure a few others

In the absence of landing a big name forward, I'm thinking the team should change the lines up a bit. I'd run with new "pairings" for the forwards and also consider trying to land a veteran for cheap to supplement the forward group.
Tkachuk-Monahan
I think these two should be tried together, you have a great playmaker in Tkachuk and a good shooter in Monahan. Both guys have decent size and can compliment each other along the boards and in front of the net. On the RW, I'd put Ryan there as he gives these two a bit of speed and quickness and he can also help Monahan on the faceoffs. Sometimes, you can switch Ryan and Dube a bit for a different look.
Gaudreau-Lindholm
I just don't like Monahan and Gaudreau defensively and I think it's time to split them up. Lindholm has chemistry with Johnny and he's one of our best two way forwards. On the RW, can be a mix of Ryan, Dube or even just a bigger body like Robinson or Gawdin. Maybe even Phillips to give Johnny another shooter to pass to. Or it could be a veteran that you can get on the cheap like a $1 million. Guys like Alex Galchenyuk, Ilya Kovalchuk or Corey Perry.
Mangiapane-Backlund
These two have good chemistry and are responsible defensively. Again, you can rotate the RWingers through, but a guy like Gawdin might work here. Again, signing a guy like Perry would be great for this pairing as he brings a lot of what Tkachuk brings. Galchenyuk as a guy with all world skill, but a low GAF meter might also work. Giving him a permanent home with two real hard competitors might be a good match to get this guy going. Or maybe you sign Frolik for a $1 million and give another variation on 3M. Frolik would also help on the PK which the Flames will probably need some help with Jankowski and Reider gone.
Lucic-Bennett
No need to say much about the bash brothers. Dube worked well on the RW here, but if they want to use Dube to support the other lines above, you can always throw Robinson or Rinaldo into the RW to create a real crash line. It'd be a fun line to have for the Battle of Alberta or games against the Ducks or Sharks.

Respectfully disagree.
When it comes to the bottom six, I would rather have Lucic than Johnson.
I just think it's better to have the size and hitting of Lucic, even if he costs the salary cap $750k more per season. Johnson has no value as a bottom 6 IMO, while Lucic does. At this point, I don't think Johnson brings anything more than we already have to the top 6 either.
Plus, Lucic was great in the playoffs.

The Neal signing didn't become an issue until the end of the regular season. Like I said, he was signing to that deal based on pure hard evidence that the guy was a lock for 20 goals minimum. There was no reason to think other wise. What Neal did to the Flames is on him and him alone. He should be public enemy number 1 for all Flames fans for all time. Flipping clown robbed the Flames.
Anyways, yeah we got Lucic but we are paying him less than we would be paying Neal and he actually does something positive for the team.
It sucks, but this wasn't the Flames or Trelivings doing. This is all on James "The real dipsheet" Neal.
Brouwer sucked, wasn't a good add for a young core. Trees heart was in the right place but that signing belongs right beside the Hamonic deal, I.e abject failure. Man, I'm so mad still thinking about that Hamonic trade.
