Yeah, same sentiment from Canuck fans I know as well.

My mistake, I forgot Dube played some games 2 seasons ago, thought he didn’t need protection.
As for Lucic, it is likely that he agreed before the trade to waive specifically for the expansion draft.

Ok sorry if this has been discussed. If Tanev has a NMC then who gets exposed next summer?
Gio - NMC
Tanev - NMC
Rasmus - Safe
Hanifin?

Pretty sure Tanev can be exposed he just has a limited NTC.

No NMC, just a 10-team NTC. Also, Hanifin will 100% be protected and Gio doesn't have a NMC. Tanev will be exposed unless he has a massive year and Gio has a poor year.

Tanev has a modified NTC where he can submit a 10 team no trade list. Giordano has a modified NTC, where he lists 19 teams he can be traded to. Neither of them has a NMC.

Gio has a NTC as does Tanev.
The Flames don't have any defenseman that they are forced to protect. They can expose any Dman they want.

#Flames GM Brad Treliving says team was upfront with TJ Brodie’s camp they were trying to sign Jacob Markstrom. Wanted to finalize that before focusing elsewhere.
After Markstrom signed, Treliving says focus shifted to Chris Tanev’s deal with Brodie already signed in Toronto.

I don't.

Me neither. I believe the Flames would have accepted the deal the Leafs got all day long if it was on the table. Brodie wanted to play in Toronto and likely took less to make it happen.

lol on the radio they called him an elite team guy. I like the signing and player but come on with labeling intangibles as elite

Counterpoint: now that they have a starting goalie, they can actually attempt to execute a vision.

are you comfortable with the mobility of the top pair if it's gio - rasmus? Believe me I love both guys, I think they're both smart and know how to positionally play. Now to your point, Gio and Andersson did play together as the top pair but for me I have some questions about that for a season and playoffs - just from the mobility pov. I have no doubt about their other abilities.
Plus maybe the aggregate of their strengths are perfect for a top pair but to me that is my immediate question about running those two as the top pair.

Giordano-Andersson was a pairing for 276:30 last season. In those minutes:
MG/RA vs MG/TJ
CF%: 54.91% vs 53.32%
FF%: 55.23% vs 52.12%
SF%: 54.64% vs 50.67%
SCF%: 56.20% vs 52.34%
HDCF%: 56.58% vs 51.00%
xGF%: 56.06% vs 53.13%
Granted, they did have a higher OZF% (54.50% vs 46.09%) but Giordano and Andersson formed an elite pairing last year.
Both their numbers were worse away from eachother. However, same thing can be said for Hanifin-Andersson as a pairing, who were also excellent as a pairing and had worse numbers away from eachother, which is why I want to keep them together so badly if Hanifin isn't traded.
However, based on Treliving's comment on 960 today, it sounds like the plan is for Andersson to play with Gio and for Tanev to be paired with one of the younger guys.

When you have elite or even very good players you almost never hear analysts lead with their intangibles. You usually will hear about skillsets first, whether it is their first pass or their gap control, or skating, or physicality or whatever it is that distinguishes them. It is rare IMO that intangibles are what distinguishes a great player.

5 on 5 I think this year we start to see the 1st and 2nd pairing start to play similar minutes

So it seems clear Brodie wasn’t coming here. Who do people think was the next best defenceman to sign around that cost, if not Tanev. Barrie? A defensive liability. Krug got 7x$6.5. Vatanen? DeMelo? Shattenkirk?

Hanifin - Tanev will inevitably lead to flubs where one of them gets called "Tanevin".

I think they would have been better off with any of Barrie, DeMelo or Shattenkirk given the values those guys signed at.
But the deal is done and the question now becomes how best to use him. I would say next to Valimaki, and on PK1 duty, is the way to go. But I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with Gio.

Can someone who knows how to look up the fancy charts do a comparison between Tanev and Hamonic?

The main problem I have with this signing is the loss in opportunity.
This deal basically put the nail in the coffin for a major forward UFA signing.
In terms of Tanev's performance, we can wait and see.
But we don't need to wait in order to see how this has negatively affected what could have been done.
A lack of high-end forward depth was the problem in the playoff. This doesn't solve that.
