The fact that Tanev signed such a similar deal after Brodie left to Toronto makes me think it was a plan B. BT will never come out and say that much but timing and dollar wise plus with the news that we were still negotiating with Brodie after free agency opened makes me think that

Brodie's camp would have to keep some sort of open line going with Calgary just in case literally everything else fell apart, but IMO that guy was planning to be out the door the second any formidable offer came in to his agent.
Tre literally traded him last off season. He was gone and only Kadri and his NTC kept Brodie here. I know they're professionals and all, but there is no way that sits well with a core player who had been with the org for a dozen years.
Word on the street is his place has been packed up for quite a while now too. The guy was not coming back.
Just my opinion.

Like think of it this way, Tanev would have been a more important grab for the Oilers. Instead they went the same way they always do, score touchdowns and hope you can eek out a 1 goal win.

Being a GM is not easy, Brad proves that all the time. There are an elite few that are very good and then a bunch of GM's just trying their best.

Perhaps, and we may have had to give more than Toronto did in term or AAV, we won’t ever know that likely
I just feel like an agent wouldn’t string the team along as a total safety net if there was literally zero interest in coming back and it was widely reported that the two sides were talking well into free agency so to me that screams a last ditch effort was made to come to terms

Those ratings take into account a lot of information.
I did not say being an NHL GM is easy, but I believe Treliving will buy out that contract. I think Tanev is a shadow of his former self, and I think that contract has too much term and salary. Vancouver seems to have thrown Tanev to the wolves last season, and he has a positive defensive impact. But I think the overall impact is negative enough that there will be a buyout.

I wouldn’t put it that way. Going into free agent negotiations without a backup plan is just good business, even if you have a clear first choice. Do you think the Flames didn’t have a backup plan to signing Markstrom? Agent/team just say that we are considering your offer but we have a lot of balls in the air. Everyone understands, it’s just business. I actually think the Flames offered more than Toronto, or negotiations wouldn’t have continued until the last minute. The difference just wasn’t enough to lure Brodie away from his personal first choice.

I suspect he will be taken in the expansion draft. Who else would the Flames exposure who would be worth taking. He will be playing top 4 minutes up to the time of the draft.

Like I said elsewhere, one of Dube, Bennett or Mangiapane has to be exposed barring trade. Two have to be exposed if Lucic doesn’t waive.

Backlund will be 32.
If Bennett, Mangiapane and Dube all have good years, I think it will be Backlund. Simply because of his age and cap hit, not as an indictment of his play.

I like Tanev and I think he can and will help the team and bring an element that we were missing with our current roster. That being said I really think the contract could have been better. Especially if the Canucks final offer was 2 x 2 as was rumored. Tre probably could have circled back on him after going through other options and gotten him cheaper/less term. Although he is a player they identified they wanted and went out and got him. I can respect that.

At the end of the day though, it is a jigsaw puzzle, and it depends on what other teams are exposing.
If there are lots of forwards available, and they feel they need some defense, it is entirely possible that Tanev is taken.

I think it was rumoured at 2 x $4, not 2 x $2

Tanev had a complete and career year in 2019-20, playing with--and helping--Hughes. He was fantastic in the post-season. We needed a big, steady dman who can close out games, and we got one.
I approve of this move.

Possibly, but I don’t see Bennett taking 2C. Maybe Dube.

My post that you quoted wasn't questioning Tanev, it was questioning the stats people are citing

I am not suggesting either does.
If they exposed, and lost, Backlund in the expansion draft, I would imagine that they would use that cap savings to sign a replacement.
However, if Bennett does have a good year, I would think that he would leapfrog Backlund on the depth charts at that point (again, Backlund would be 32)

Backlund as a player would be attractive. He’d have, what, though, 2 Or 3 more years at $5.35. Maybe he’d actually be a safe exposure.
I suppose it is really a draft time decision based on this year’s play.

I asked a buddy who is a Canucklehead about Tanev...
heart & soul guy
shot blocker extraordinaire
very good defensively
I asked if it was it a good pick-up by the Flames...
"Definitely"
