What? he played in the top pair for a playoff team that made it to the second round and was their best defensive dman

I get not everyone likes the player but this is ridiculous

It’s pretty useless to compare Brodie and Tanev as if Treliving had a choice, when we don’t know if that’s the case. I think Treliving would have had to overpay Brodie to get him to stay.

Tanev.

His shot's a muffin but he can still move the puck really well and is better defensively.

I am drunk and not considering term, just this coming season.

This team would have been better off with Tyson Barrie by a significant measure, and mores with TJ Brodie.

So in closing:

"Flames sign Chris Tanev ($4, years, $4.5M AAV)"

Remember as well, folks, that you need certain types of players who will get you through to the next shift.

They can’t all be flashy and have excellent possession metrics. You also need guys who can muck it up, get in the way, clear the net, and be a good meat shield.

You can’t be paying offer sheet prices to acquire one, but they’re still necessary.

Nobody liked the Engelland signing when it happened, and the guy was as big a legend as you could be on a three year contract with a team that didn’t win anything.

It is incomprehensible to me that people do not understand that UFAs get more money/ salary than restricted players.

Ryan was an excellent signing at exactly what he got.

Literally, there was NO acquisition cost. 35 points a season, great PKer, very good defensively.

I think that top pair succeeded largely in spite of him... Hughes' numbers were far better when he wasn't paired with Tanev

But I thought that team had their face smashed in every game and that’s why Markstrom was such a good signing.

What one is it?

That I didn't mention Tanev in a specific match up vs another player? Didn't know I needed to be that specific...

First of all, that games played is pretty damned big difference. He has missed on average almost 30 games in the last four years. He's barely above 50 games per year in his whole career.

Second, Tanev is no Regehr defensively, and Regehr played in a pretty different era. These days, d-men need to bring offense.

Well, definitely extremely mixed reviews on this signing.

Hopefully it works out.

Probably why BT didn't trade him elsewhere during the draft, or for additional picks. Calgary made him an offer knowing he would see what Toronto's counter was; The rest was up to Brodie.

Lindholm
Monahan
Backlund
Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Mangiapane
Bennett
Dube

All forwards with more value to the flames right now. Arguably Lucic, too.

4th line players who can kill penalties are replaceable. See Tobi Reider’s contract today as evidence. I too like Derek Ryan, but his contract is too rich for his role on this team moving forward.

To me, it is Old School Hockey Vs. New School Hockey.

From a New School Hockey perspective, Tanev's underlying numbers are bad and have been regressing. It looks awful from a numbers perspective. This is Troy Brouwer levels of bad.

From an Old School Hockey perspective, Tanev is a warrior. He blocks shots, he's the ultimate teammate, and has a history of being perceived as being good in his own zone.

How this deal plays out to me is the Eye Test Vs. Analytics all wrapped into one player and one contract.

Tanev's last two years:

CF%: 45.51
SF%: 45.94
GF%: 47.40
xGF%: 46.37
SCF%: 43.95
HDCF%: 46.52
HDGF%: 44.68

Those numbers are putrid.
It's also prudent to mention that in the last 2 years Tanev's offensive zone starts are just 42.3%, 17th lowest in the NHL among defenseman (min. 40gp). For comparison sake, the lowest regular Flames player the last 2 years was Hanifin at 48.6, ranked t-99th

They did, Tanev is still far better than a "replacement level player"

Markstrom and Tanev's numbers will both be better with the Flames than rebuilding Vancouver IMO

Just because a team gets outplayed every game doesn't mean they have no good players obviously. Vancouver's D is much worse this season unless they have something up their sleeves

Good signing, but wasted as a 4th liner. So he’s probably not value for money at this stage.

Well, obviously.

If a guy is useless offensively, he's not going to get a lot of offensive zone starts.
