IMO Backlund is the key to defending McDavid.

insert pretty much every d-man in the league into this question.

Hamonic was considered fairly mobile when acquired.

7th best forward?? Derek Ryan is a 4th liner at this point in his career, and not an above average one at that.

figured Calgary was going to sign someone after Brodie left... Tanev was a guy i thought they'd look to.
Price and terms were a little higher than i would have liked. 3years at 4m would have been good, even 4x4.
But not horrible...needed a replacement for Brodie and got one of the better ones available.
i'd still like to add someone like Kahun, as the other guys like Hall and Toffoli are out unless they make a trade.

I'm curious to know about an outsider's perspective that has seen Tanev at work but still closely watched the Flames:
Tanev or Brodie - for the Flames - at their new deals? All context relevant. Thanks in advance, Blaster.

Tanev is barely a top 4 guy.
Has never played more than 70 games... never in 10 seasons.
Has hit more than 20 points... never.
Has scored more than 2 goals... twice.

I don't mind this move at all. The team as constructed needed changes. These are good changes so far. I hope he comes in and does a great job. I don't imagine Treleving is done. Let's see what else happens.

I'm curious about what makes you say that. I get he's not exactly sexy but he's a phenomenal PKer who scored, you guessed it, the seventh-most points of any Flames forward last year (and there was a pretty big dropoff to eighth).

Tanev is a good player. Makes $150k less than Brodie did last year.
Tanev’ lack of Firepower will open up the chance for one of the the young D to take on a more offensive role.
Gio-Rasmus
Hanifin-Tanev
Valimaki-Kylington
Valimaki and Kylington are wild cards - I have no sense for how good either are anymore.
But it’s not a group devoid of talent, that’s for sure.

in my opinion, Tanev is none of those things. IMO we're talking about a good third-line centre vs. a mediocre second-pairing defenseman with substantial injury issues
but I will wait until I see him on the ice
|
I like Doc, a lot. But calling his contract very good is simply not true, it's average at best when he is being used as a 3C, but of the plan is to use him on the 4th line, it is a poor contract.

This trajectory does not look good...
This is a bad signing.

This is going to be an interesting contract to see play out.
To me, it is Old School Hockey Vs. New School Hockey.
From a New School Hockey perspective, Tanev's underlying numbers are bad and have been regressing. It looks awful from a numbers perspective. This is Troy Brouwer levels of bad.
From an Old School Hockey perspective, Tanev is a warrior. He blocks shots, he's the ultimate teammate, and has a history of being perceived as being good in his own zone.
How this deal plays out to me is the Eye Test Vs. Analytics all wrapped into one player and one contract.
Tanev's last two years:
CF%: 45.51
SF%: 45.94
GF%: 47.40
xGF%: 46.37
SCF%: 43.95
HDCF%: 46.52
HDGF%: 44.68
Those numbers are putrid.

Outside of the games played this sounds like Robyn Regher. What a bum.

And I think if the plan is to use Tanev on the first pairing for four years, it's a disastrous contract.
I liked Tanev in his prime but IMO he is so far past it at this point. He has played one full season in his career. He is signed until he's 34 and he might not be better than replacement level this season.

I don't understand any of this advanced metric/stat stuff, but does it account for playing with a rebuilding team over the last 2-3 years?

Ryan played a bunch more games than either Bennett or Dube, both of whom I place higher in importance to Ryan.
