What is this rubbish? What does it even mean.
I will take the word of many Canucks fans who are sad about him leaving just like the Flames with Brodie. Or the word of fans who watched him and clearly label him as a heart and soul guy who cares - the Flames need more of that.

His numbers went down because Vancouver got worse...overall, and defensively.
He's always been one of their best defenders.
He will play better here then he did there, I'm sure of that.

If the flames cant muster offense from gio, hanafin, anderson , valamaki and kylington. Then they need different youth to develope.

I liked Tanev in his prime but IMO he is so far past it at this point. He has played one full season in his career. He is signed until he's 34 and he might not be better than replacement level this season.

Its okay, we have a couple Mackey/Maki kids with some legs pushing up through the ranks.
Long as he can be nhl caliber.

Ryan is gone next year anyways and he is a serviceable player but I don’t see a lot of Derek Ryan’s on championship teams.
He’s not skilled enough for the top 6 and not big and strong enough for the bottom six. He’s a good player but he’s the classic “tweener” type player for “tweener” type teams.
The 4th line needs to get bigger, stronger and faster and Ryan doesn’t really fit there.

Heart and soul guy who cares
what Islanders fans said about Hamonic

Isn’t the consensus that Tanev had a better playoffs than Brodie?
My VAN friends are pretty upset with this signing.

This is CalgaryPuck you know... (though with the amount of Canucks talk recently, maybe we need to rebrand ) so I don't understand why people are surprised when there may be a bit of homerism. Plus, it's been so bipolar, you're either a homer or someone who hates the team and if I wanted to read threads about how much someone hates the Flames, I can check out the other board.
Plus, it's not as if your initial comment was coming from a tone of neutrality, it just simply didn't make sense. We all can agree that E=NG (at least I hope we can) but if we were to acquire McDavid and Draisatl, should that be looked down upon? Hyperbole I know, but the point stands.

That's the point, though. I'd rather just keep Ryan because he's gone after next year and him leaving will free space for the kids. Tanev is IMO a worse player on a worse contract and he's probably going to be on the books for at least the next four years.
But I would happily be wrong about this. What number is he going to wear? Will Valimaki give up #8?

Same thing was said about Brouwer and Neal.
Tanev's has a negative impact when he's on the ice. He provides legitimate good defense 5v5, but overall his impact is negative.
The Flames need more players that have heart and soul AND are going to help them win games, not players like Tanev

Hamonic didn’t disappoint in that area, and he did have one season I thought was pretty darn good. But Tanev has played better than Hamonic over the last 2 years so if you get those intangibles plus improved play, great.

Since all it cost was money and an extra $750k, I’ll take that over a 1st and two 2nds.

Nope.
From a numbers perspective they both got their teeth kicked in during the playoffs, Tanev a good deal worse than Brodie did - but neither were good.

I get the feeling that Brodie and his wife maybe had thoughts of being closer to family at home especially with her health, and the fact that Treliving tried already to move Brodie in the offseason helped push him to sign with the Leafs.

That's a valid point around Neal and Brouwer. I don't love the move but I would rather have him than Hamonic or Barrie.

It’s his isolated Impact on expected goals against with him on the ice (redline) and expected goals for with him on the ice (blue line)
So Canucks fans are right and he was at one point a really good defensive dman, but he’s been on a downward trajectory for 4 seasons and wasn’t that good last season anymore.
So hopefully he bucks the trend but based on his injury history and age it not likely that he finds his previous level.
I don’t know why this team has to act like cap space needs to be filled right away. Lots of teams in cap trouble and they could have maybe taken advantage of the situation. Instead we go out and spend $10.5M right away on day one of free agency.

If I were an NHL GM I would simply not sign/trade for aging declining players with lots of money and/or term.
