So Markström says the Flames having so many guys from Sweden was indeed a factor in him signing in Calgary, Jacob says Sweden is such a small country that you either playing with or against these other Swedish players in the NHL.

The Flames had been struggling to sign their star and Captain, Joe Nieuwendyk to a new contract. The Flames and Nieuwendyk had reached an impass and things weren’t going anywhere. Calgary offered Nieuwendyk a 3 year deal after an arbitrator awarded him a 1 year $1.85 million dollar deal, but he declined.
|
So the arbitrator made a decision, and Joe declined? I didn’t think they could decline it. Seems he held out, and wanted a new better contract.

Whereas the Flames have almost always had that marquee d-man. Macinnis, Bouwmeester, Giordano

Sorry to say but I think Holtby is past his hay day. Caps rode him hard for a lengthy stint.
You're probably getting .910 goaltending or less on average now.
But you guys have the weapons now that maybe you can outscore that.
The upside is if Demko is ready to handle 40-50 games playing at a decent level. But he's not going to be at Vegas level every night. Pretty well impossible with a condensed schedule.

I'm happy with the signing. Goaltending shouldn't be an excuse going forward although Sigalet is still in the picture.

The Flames would have probably had some higher draft choices in the years to come, instead of Daniel Tkaczuk (Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Olli Jokinen, Roberto Luongo, Eric Brewer) Or instead of Rico Fata (Vincent Lecavalier, David Legwand, Brad Stuart, Bryan Allen, Vitaly Vishnevsky)

Long term UFA signings always have risk associated. Markstrom has been solid the last few years and seems to have a great attitude and work ethic. Teams do their homework and take the chance on what they think is an impact player. I’m pretty excited for this signing. Lots of talk about Rittich on this thread. I think having a true #1 in front of him will be great for his development and take some pressure off so he can focus on improving his game.

I don't like it. May be in the minority but signing 30 year old goalies coming off a career year with a .911 career save percentage for that much money doesn't make sense.
Goaltending is as important as it is fickle. You can win a cup with a hot goalie who then goes into oblivion the next season. Especially when he lost his starting job to a rookie in the playoffs.
Cam Talbot, who had a slightly better SP last year, will be the same age as Markstrom by the end of their respective contracts.
That's a big chunk of the salary cap, for a career year that equated to average goaltending. Are we hoping he gets better at the age of 30?

Logged in to say I'm pretty happy with the signing. Would I have liked it better if it was 5 years intead of 6, sure.... but oh well. Hopefully he'll provide value for 4 or 5 out of the 6 years.
I'm just happy the team has a goaltender who will provide some consistency in net.

Do you mean "his last season" since two seasons ago it was .911.
So to compare save percentages you are going to use only the most recent year which has your new guy's highest and our new guy's lowest and assume that's just the new norm? Well okay then.
I think it's more likely that holtby rebounds and Markstrom holds steady, but I also don't get off more on other team's suffering (other than the Oilers) than I do on my own team's success so I am coming at this with a different lens than a Flames fan =-o

The age thing isn't as much of an issue for Goalies. I think it was Haynes that tweeted that in the final year of Markstom's new contract he will be the same age Mike Smith was in his first year with the Flames 3 years ago.

Markstrom was a late bloomer so his earlier seasons bring down his average, been close to elite if not elite the last two seasons.
Talbot played less games and was utilized against easier opponents when Rittich was the 1A for a good portion of the year, which greatly helped his edge in SP. Markstrom did it as the defacto #1. Was the canucks MVP, which became obvious when they dropped like a rock after he went down.
If you're concerned about age, well Talbot is older.
Talbot finishes his contract with the Wild at 36 years old. Markstrom will be 35 at the end of his contract here.
Markstrom has also played less games than average for his age. Should have a decent amount of hockey left in him because of that.
Food for thought dude..

And behind that awful defense he's probably a below .900.
