I didnt catch his name, but Pinder had a super interesting guest this morning specializing in another level of advanced stats (if you are into that). His take was that there are effectively 36 different types of scoring chances that his system tracks. Each team has different scoring chance "types" so something you should consider weighing into your goalie decision is the type of chances your team tends to give up and select a goalie whose strengths play to that.
Based on his models, some teams in his analysis would expect a +50 less goals than expected with Markstrom. This is not the be all end all, but puts some data behind the eye test that Markstrom is better than his save percentage. I dont think I watched a single game last year where the Canucks weren't dominated.

Will Bobrovsky waive that NMC to be traded to the Flames? All that matters is Vezina trophies, right?

They’re outta cap so they need to do the D/G combo and stick with smith.

By this logic Koskinen is better than Price

Markstrom will take the Flames offer (or lower) from the Oilers and turn into a Swedish Carey Price.

Congratulations Flames fans. You got a goaltender that when scoring chances, shot quality etc are taken into account ranks among the very best in the league.

So, not many other options for Markstrom then, right?
Its almost like teams know he will sign with Calgsry and chose alternative routes.

No he wasn't... In what sense was he a nominee for the Vezina? Every goalie is eligible. No one gets "nominated", in the normal sense of that word.
Usually when people talk about a "Vezina nominee", they mean a top three vote getter. He was not that.

Yup it’s not often you see interested parties go for the backup plans of a position while the big name is still on the board. This is all that has eased my mind.

Is Dominik Hasek still playing roller hockey? Maybe he'd come out of retirement?

I think the holdup might be clauses. The Flames don't give out NMC and that might be a sticking point with Markstrom. I think they both want to get something done though and ultimately will.

If the sun rises today it will be a bad day. If the sun doesn't rise today it will be a bad day....no matter the outcome...it will be a bad day.
I guess when you constrain all the possible outcomes to being negative...then the outcome will be negative....

Why would he do that when the Oilers are still begging goalies to come play for them?

He was a nominee like every other goalie in the league. No one talks about Vezina nominees. They say finalists and like I said, even that’s not accurate.
He finished 4th in Vezina voting. That’s good. Guess what place Holtby was in the year before he won?

I disagree, not signing him would be a positive as it would lead to the rebuild quicker. This team needs a 1C 2C and a 1D more than it needs a 1G currently, Monahan, Backs and Gio are just not good enough sadly.
