Default Flames still in contract negotiations with Brodie

Seattle isn’t going to take that contract.

If Seattle isn’t going to take that contract, with all the cap space in the world, why would Calgary give him that contract?

If it’s such a good contract, I expect Seattle would be all over it.

Brodie should not be offered more than a 5 year deal.

Could we give Brodie a NMC for the first 2 yrs. of his deal to keep Seattle from taking him? Or would that make it impossible to protect other D we value more?

That would make it more difficult to protect the other defensemen that we value more.

They should stay away from a no movement clause.
If anything, it might be a good thing if they (Seattle) claimed Brodie, who would be what, 32 by then?
If Seattle claims the defenseman who the Flames sign today, it means it must have been a decent signing. But it's a good problem to have.

I doubt he signs here then. We could offer him a one-year deal but that’s risky for TJ in the case of a major injury.

They could just not protect Gio , which would be the smart move .

I don't get why they'd give Brodie a NMC or even a NTC. If he's one of the teams best defenders, the team is in trouble. I hope the team is really sticking to their guns with Brodie, he's been a warrior for the team but I think it's time for a change. People like to say "change for the sake of change is terrible" but to that I say staying average for the sake of staying average gets you nowhere.

The team is at a crossroads, they have to either drastically improve because they're not getting better by keeping the same team together.

I would not offer Brodie an NMC or NTC. Length of the contract would not exceed 4 years.

If that doesn't work, Flames and Brodie should part ways.

Brodie, does not have enough offensive talent to demand a high AAV in my opinion

I agree and I can't see Brodie signing without a full NTC or close to it. Someone else can overpay for a 30+ 2nd pairing defenseman on a long term deal.

Well, he was our best D-man last season. Losing him doesn’t improve the team, unless we’re burning it down.

I like Brodie. I think he makes this team better. I would be ok with a 5 or 6 year deal at ~5m AAV.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
CGY and pending UFA D T.J. Brodie, a left shot who plays the right side, have had more contract talks in the last hour but weren’t able to get a deal done. Unless things change before noon, expect Brodie to go market.

What is the other option Bob?

You have to wonder if a NTC is what held the deal up. I'm sure Brodie would want one.

I think it is a major factor for all UFAs right now, they are going to want expansion protection
