Yeah.
He's had awful luck. All the pressure of "haha Canuck ####ed up" which is not his fault, coupled with some absolutely terrible freak injuruies over three seasons.
He's been ready to make the jump (if healthy) for about a year. If the Canucks were just playing "best player available" he probably should have been in the line-up during the play-offs but that is a rough ask for a rookie and he just isn't as physical as Fantenberg.
Will he be a #1 or #2 d-man? Nah. But he still could be a rock solid number 4 guy.

I have no doubt the Oilers will take a run at Markstrom. I could see their pitch being something like “take less money to play with McDavid”. Probably won’t work but that’s where I can see them going.

This season we've got real skin in the game, but next season is when we need to start making hay.
Edit- Forgot the Luongo recapture. whoopsie. 15 mil

You are assuming anyone they sign this offseason will be a one year deal also...its not happening...they won't have anywhere near 40M cap space next offseason
Also, they will have a lot more than two guys to sign. It will be tight

Assuming they sign anyone.
In truth, I hope we sit out the first few days other than Markstrom or Toffoli if we circle back around. As I said earlier in the rumours thread, there are going to be some surprisingly good deals come November that will only want one or two year deals while they wait out the flat cap.

How much do you expect Gaudette, Motte and possibly Leivo to cost?
Right now, signed we have
Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - Eriksson
Roussell - Sutter -
MacEwen - Beagle -
Hughes - Myers
Edler - Benn
Juolevi - Rafferty
Demko
Realistically, you're going to see a bargain bin d-man to push Rafferty back to Utica but beyond that, I don't see any major expenditures. Unless Ferland can actually play again.

We have a fancy new arena and McDavid.
Don't worry about the #### hole city and the fact that we've missed the playoffs 13 out of 14 seasons.
If Markstrom signs there despite any other team giving him a comparable offer to whatever the oilers offer, someone better put him under concussion protocol.

Which one? How much will they cost? Unless it's Markstrom, I don't see us spending much or giving term. Remember we do have DiPietro in the pipe-line who had a solid year in Utica last season.

Not in Edmonton. What colour do you get when you mix blue and orange? That’s the Edmonton sky.

Say whatever you will about Markstrom, he's a really good goalie and a true number 1.
But if you're the Flames and you're prepared to pay 6 million AAV. Are you sacrificing elsewhere? Or does some careful and creative budgeting make it work without having to sacrifice depth at another position.
I ask this because I find the middle 6 forwards on this team to be lacking already.

Drance and dhaliwal said they would allocate around 3m for a vet 1b type for demko
Maybe a 2 year deal, just so they have one to make available in the expansion draft

Only have one goalie for that value, instead of two equaling that exact same value.

If you do its for one year a sacrifice because Rittich will be gone and a back-up worth a mill or so will be in his place.
Worth it for a true number one goalie.

This is where I am at as well - what is the opportunity cost with say Kuemper vs Markstrom.
I don't think that Kuemper is going to cost a 1st - not with the amount of goalies being available, and how cheap some players are moving around because of the cap.
Plus, you can hopefully send money the other way as well as part of the deal for a player that you no longer have plans for, freeing up a bit more room.
I don't know what the right answer is. I am not 100% sold on Markstrom being the answer myself, and though I would like to see what the contract would be for him, from the rumours that are circulating I won't really love it. However, every goalie available has some warts - whether if it is the "Is he really a #1? His stats don't point to it" (Markstrom), to "That's a pretty short runway of being a #1" (Kuemper) to "Holtby was fantastic for the most part... but he has kind of sucked for a while now, but will be cheaper" (Holtby).
There isn't a goalie available right now that doesn't worry me for one reason or another. Heck, even if Price was coming over at 50% retained, I would say: "Yeah, he has been great, but he is over the hill". If Carter Hart came over, I would say: "He is so young without much time as a proven #1 - maybe he is just a Jim Carey."
Damn these hockey gods for not giving Kiprusoff immortality!

Who is playing D on that Canucks roster with 9M cap space? And I still think your numbers are off

Just make Luongo come back, aren't you paying him like $3M already for the next 200 years.

I think the reason they qualified Virtanen was he had trade value so I'd say they could unload there.

It's 6 if Ferland plays. Ferland isn't playing. I am literally going off of Capfriendly.
I already posted the players that would likely end up playing D. Benning has been pretty adamant that we are going to see guys who played in the AHL last year make the step to becoming NHL regulars next season.
