I'd protect him over Gio. I don't think there's anyway Seattle takes a 38 year old Gio.

I wonder how low we could get his cap hit down on a 7 or 8 year deal. I know it would suck the final 3 years or so, but if it gets it down to close to 4m, might be worth that risk.

Obviously the Flames would love to have him back, comes down to if Brodie wants to test FA or not.

It comes down to agreeing on a contract, if they are talking, obviously there is mutual interest.

Honestly I don't mind that. Never even thought of that.

I think with the new CBA extension the lowest year can't be less than half of the largest year. So, maybe something like this could work?

Year 1 - $5,500,000
Year 2 - $5,500,000
Year 3 - $4,000,000
Year 4 - $4,000,000
Year 5 - $4,000,000
Year 6 - $3,000,000
Year 7 - $3,000,000
Year 8 - $3,000,000
Total - $32,000,000

$4m AAV, gives him and his family long term security, while giving us more money to play with during his good years

Losing Brodie and paying Barrie more would infuriate me. Have to staple an aging Gio to him while Gio's offense disappears from having to play it so safe.

Loss loss

Maybe, but they stapled Hamilton to him and he did just fine. You're right though, he's aging.

Go with 8x4.55. Match Andersson and lock up the top 4 for years.

Seattle isn’t going to take that contract.

Brodie > Barrie. Sometimes change just for the sake of change isn't a good thing, and anyone out there who is a clear upgrade on Brodie is going to cost way too much.

Get it done Tre.

If we can sign one of Markstrom or Hall and Brodie I’ll consider tomorrow a win

Well the top goalie UFA or the top forward UFA would certainly be a win

Brodie or no Brodie

I really find so many posters are underrating Barrie. He's really comparable to Hamilton, a little worse than Brodie defensively, but vastly superior offensively.

While normally I would agree with you about change, I don't think that theory applies to the Calgary Flames.

Also I think people are forgetting the power play. Who is quarterbacking the first unit now next year? Gus did an admirable job, Giordano is much better suited for the 2nd unit. It would be good to add another right shot dman who can quarterback it.

Not saying throw an absurd amount of money at him but if they are comparable I go Barrie. Although if that means not being able to offer Hall a contract, I don't do it.

Presuming Brodie signs a long-term deal here, how effective will he be in a couple of years after Gio retires?

Win-win
Ultimate win-win! However in the last PGT, she did give a strong hint that Brodie might have played his last game as a Flames. Not trying to stir the gossip pot, but if you read between the lines in her post it certainly gave that impression.

However this report of the Flames still negotiating is great news. If the Flames come out of UFA day with Brodie as the only big signing, I will be happy with that. Brodie has a unique skillset that will be extremely difficult to replace and the Flames will miss him starting on game 1.

He will be very effective the entire length of whatever contract he signs. Safe to say the GG years were the outliers in his career, as he has bounced back nicely since GG has been gone. He is an excellent #2D who can play on almost any top pairing on any team in the league. When I think of Flames' players who disappoint and aren't part of the solution, Brodie is the least of my worries.

Really really hope he finds a desire to stay here and BT can make it happen.

Brodie is 30, turning 31 in June.

last 3 to 4 years could be really tough.

A buy out for sure, is likely to occur in years 6, 7 or 8?

Max of 4 years for a player of this type in my opinion
