I won't leap to the conclusion that this an old boys club issue. Ottawa did acquire him, put him on the top line, and offer a "substantial raise." Seems like they value Duclair and wanted to keep him around. And I am almost certain Ottawa brass knew he was black the whole time. I mean, it is Ottawa we're talking about here.

I think this one comes down to good, old fashioned money. Looking at Duclair's career stats, there's a case to be to be made that he's pretty good, but also that he's not that great, depending on where/when/with whom he plays:

Career shooting% is 12.9. Was 12.5 with Ott. last season. and 20! in 21 games with Ott in 18/19.

11.96 with Columbus in 53 games with CB in 18/19

Just 6.9 in Chi. in 17-18

13.24, (another off-year) 6.58, and 19.05 with AZ in 17/18 going back to 15/16

So he has good years and bad. If he is getting time on the top line in Ott, despite the great shooting% he didn't really put up top line points: 23g, 17a, 40 pts in 66 games. Could be he wanted to get paid like a top-line player, but Ottawa felt his ask was an overpayment. Players and organizations have parted ways for these reasons before. Seems even more likely if the negotiations got heated.

Edit: Saw this on NHL.com: of Duclari's 23 goals only two were in the last 29 games. Maybe he was on a hot streak earlier?

I don't know how long Duclair has been representing himself, but seeing as he's been on five teams already, it could be that he is just bad at managing his career and puts teams off. Wouldn't be the first player to do that either.

That said, with the talent he has, I expect he will land somewhere. Maybe even in Seattle eventually.

We all know he will end up in Florida. It's the home for many cast-offs from other teams and they are in need of scoring wingers. It's a foregone conclusion, and I'm not really thrilled about it.

Prediction: Panthers overpay, and then pay Seattle to take him, where he flourishes. Panther style.

I wouldnt mind taking a flyer on him, but his season probably prices him out of what the flames will be willing to play.

Even as someone in the top percentile of hockey watching, I honestly never thought about why I seldom saw black centremen until reading this, even as someone fully familiar with the black QB situation. The paragraphs and table below on players in trades was startling.

Racial Bias in Drafting and Development: The NHL’s Black Quarterback Problem

At the professional level, hockey players are often expected to sacrifice their individualism for the sake of the team, and refrain from straying too far out of the pre-conceived norms of hockey culture. Those that do can be subject to ridicule and rebuke from both the team and the media. A player of color, particularly a visible minority who does not actively attempt to transform their persona into a more hockey culture appropriate one, may face adverse consequences as a result. Players such as Anthony Duclair, Josh Ho-Sang, and P.K. Subban serve as somber reminders of players who clashed with management for transgressions that seem relatively minor from the outside looking in before being moved or demoted. However, even top performers without any noted character concerns such as Wayne Simmonds and Seth Jones were traded by their drafting team.

To quantify the frequency of this occurrence, we looked at every player’s under 25 seasons since 2008 (using data from evolving-hockey.com), and identified whether or not they ended up playing for multiple NHL teams in that time frame. Breaking these numbers out by their ethnic categories, shows a stark difference in outcomes for Black players over any other group. Nearly half of the Black players in the data set (49%) ended up moving on from their original team by age 25, a rate nearly double that of White players.

Once again, it is hard to reconcile the stark difference in outcomes between the groups when the difference in on ice impacts are minimal at best (the average WAR of the moved players was roughly the same across all groups).

Absolutely nothing to do with the majority of them are/were simply very average players who are/were easily replaceable/upgradable by cheaper alternatives.

Simmonds remained in Philly's top 6 until he declined, and Philly moved on, nothing to see here.
PK Subban literally assaulted with his own teammates multiple times, and he got traded for Shea Weber, who was definitely an upgrade, and surprising still is, so what exactly is the narrative here again?
Seth Jones is playing top minutes on the top pairings, uh, what exactly is the problem?
Ho-Sang? Duclair? Seriously?

And a team sport is demanding athletes to scarify their individualism?
What.A.Shocking.Revealation!

I am truly getting so sick of this black race card latching on everything.
Look into real problems, instead of desperately trying to drag down everything.

You can assume that they tried to trade him with no takers.

What would have been really stupid would to qualify him and get taken to arbitration and be forced to pay him well more than he is worse.

He got points getting premium ice time so will get paid for that. But he didn’t get that many. He’s not a very good player.

You are doing a lot of cherry-picking and thus missing guys like Alieu, Dawes, Kane, Bowey, Buff, BGL...

You know what they say about people that represent themselves. Not as bad as representing yourself in court but stupid nonetheless. No agent fees but if negotiate a terrible deal you are still worse off.

I agree, he has been very underpaid so far in his career. Left a lot of money on the table.

Nik Backstrom?

The guy has been the center for one of the best goal scorers in NHL history for his entire career. He's been in the playoffs 12 of 13 seasons, had his team finish with less than 100 points (or a 100 point pace) only twice, never been below 90 points (or a 90 point pace) and has won a Cup.

Plus he'll still walk away with more than $100 million in career earnings. I'd hardly say the guy looks stupid at all.

His current contract (5 years/46 million, over half in signing bonuses, 3 years of a full NMC and limited NTC in the final 2 years, expires when he is 37) is the only he negotiated himself.

So who's looking stupid now?

Not to give your post any more oxygen than it deserves (which is none), but what is this statement based on?

You do after every time you post? Backstrom still left money on the table, but he also had a good career and relationship with the Capitals to back up his demands. Duclair has been the exact opposite so far.
