He played well for us last year so another year removed from the oil stink and we may be in a position of regret. Either way, he was solid for us and gave us a level of consistency that we have been lacking for a long time.
I really hope we can land one of the better available goalies but I'm hesitant to trust BT to pull this off as Free Agency and making trades for impact players have not been his strong suit thus far.

- Is this in fact true? Is BT historically a sub par negotiator ?
Legit question as I genuinely don't know the answer but I would like to know how we measure up vs other GMs at the bargaining table trying to acquire our current needs.
The fairly decent poker game he played during round 1 on Wednesday would suggest he has the savvy .

You just cannot go back to the same tandem of Talbot and Rittich next season even if Tre strikes out on Markstrom.

He has done well at the draft and negotiating contracts with our current players but the only impact player that he has brought in is Lindholm (Hanifin is close to being an impact player, but not there yet), I feel my opinion is valid.
We still had to give up the better overall player (Hamilton) so this trade is really only a small win.

Markstrom's 30, does he fit the bill? Not trying to be snippy, legitimately wondering.

I think most people on the Holtby train are actually on the "don't give a huge contract to Markstrom" train.
These people are also on the "sign Talbot for 1 more year" train. Or the "wait for Grubaur, Anderssen or Binnington next year" train.

If Markstrom doesn't work out I would give MAF a go...obviously not at full salary
He was great in the playoffs when called upon and would be highly motivated. You would be getting him for free or even gaining something depending on how much of the contract you are taking.

I like Talbot, and think he is a great option as a backup, and a decent option as a 1B guy. I don't think he is a starter, however, and at 33, he is declining.
I do think it would have been a decent move to sign him to a 2 year deal, as I am not sure the Flames really need a long-term solution now - but it depends on how long you figure Parsons and Wolf are away.
I still like the upside in Rittich - does a lot better on the high danger shots, but worse on the lower danger shots. It makes me think this is 'coachable'. I do think you need a quicker reaction time coupled with a higher degree of athleticism to make those high danger saves - especially those 2nd and 3rd shots off rebounds and scrambles. There is no teaching that - (well, except for Hasek who was famous for studying shot placements).
Rittich might still be traded though. If they sign Markstrom, the Flames may still trade Rittich out and go with a cheaper backup option. Who knows? Markstrom would probably carry term, and they can ride Parsons' and Wolfs' development a little longer, but it becomes tough to find them enough time in net in the AHL/ECHL (which is why I particularly like the Russian goalie draftee, as you don't need to worry about that).
Will be interesting to see where this whole goalie carousel stops.

I believe Talbot wants to be and believes he can be a starter. Maybe the Flames weren't willing to give him that, other than the 1a 1b situation he played under this past season. In the end I suspect he will still be available to the Flames should their other options don't pan out.

Eric Francis confirms Talbot to free agency.
Happy about this, I am.

I personally would love Fleury on the roster...I realize it's not the long-term solution that makes most sense but I just like the guy
...if Markstrom doesn't happen...
