Talbot headed to market
No surprise given the Flames seem to have their eyes on Markstrom

Cam Talbot's camp had more talks with Calgary today. Sounds like he's headed to market based on current gap in contract talks. Obviously that can change in next 24 hours.

Yeah Talbot was fine but 33 is a little old for what the Flames really need. Which is a long term solution.

I am sure there’s more to these rumours being “aired” than just stating the obvious. I would think they are a signal to other GM’s that there is a real open opportunity now, because chances or re-signing are low.

well that won't be happening...he will get a short term contract with fairly low dollars

Very much expected, given our interest in Markstrom. Doesn't mean we don't pivot back to Talbot in free agency though, if the top targets get signed by other teams.

Cam showed enough this year to find, at worst, a role as a veteran backup. Still some gas in the tank there for a 1 or maybe 2 year deal.
Mike Smith on the other hand...

Which is a risk in itself. No guarantee Talbot waits for Calgary to get back to him.

I was hoping they'd go the trade route and keep Talbot with a new tandem. Ah well, either way they need to nail this goalie acquisition. I quite liked Talbot this year.

Yeah that is very much possible.
Though I can also see some of the 1A/1B type goalies (Talbot falls in that) waiting for the top targets to sign, so they can probably get more teams interested in their services, if they miss out on the big fish.

There are a ton of teams that need to sign a goalie.
I actually think Talbot will be one of the earlier ones, simply due to price and term - he is getable for 1 or 2 years, and probably for less than $3M per.
And for that money, he is pretty good value.

Talbot to the Wild
Markstrom to Colorado (yup, out of nowhere)
Holtby to the Flames
Don't love it, feel we'd be in the same boat as previous years, but that's why it seems plausible.

I wasn't saying it because I want it. I was saying it because he'll be a "decent" option out there, and if we need a goalie (which we do) then he's on the list.
Personally I'm on the go after Andersen because the Leafs are stupid to give him up train. But to each their own.
