That dream would make me sad too... usually your GM likes to kick in goodies like 2nd round picks when he loses trades, so I definitely would be disappointed in a 1:1 trade.

That’s a fair comment. I just think that I would like to see Hanifin play with a decent partner for at least a year.

Personally I find Mangiapane a bit over rated. Amazing find for a 6th round pick but thats as far as I go, if they had a chance to flip him I will not complain. Also, I think he and his agent over rate him as well. Holding out like he did until the last second last year . Heaven only knows how this years negotiation will go.
I'm betting straight to arbitration with both sides very far apart.

His underlying numbers are incredibly strong, if you put any stock in those.

Not overly. I have not said he sucks, I just think he is over rated. Call it....Micheal Ferland syndrome if you will.
He's a hard worker and has a good nose for the net but yeah, I dont buy what the fancy stats tell people who then tell me.

If he was Russian and his name was Mangiapaneov you’d probably want us to give him a 8 year deal.

Mangiapane is fantastic by any metric. Counting stats, analytics, the eye test. The guy is a great player.
How can you say his agent overrated him by trying to get a better deal? He had no rights hence the low contract but the guy provided 15 goals and 28 points at even strength for less than 1% of the cap. He was clearly worth more than 715 k

I think the opposite for Mangi and think he's underrated. I don't think we've even seen his potential yet. Every time he's given more ice time he's showing he can produce. Forget that he's a 6th rounder, he has a sneaky good shot, good hands, great speed. He just needs to work on strength and defensive game which I think can come and he's not even in his prime years yet.

Obviously the Flames weren't willing to take that bet that he was better than 715k and rightfully so. The fact that they had zero negotiation power and were still willing to hold out was stupid.
As I said, I dont think he sucks, I think he is over rated. Much like the grand mythos of Micheal Ferland. I'll stand by that and it doesn't really matter anyways, he either signs a good deal or is dealt or he gets what the arbitrator awards him. No skin off my teeth.

Treliving was just playing the cards he was dealt. He held every advantage in that negotiation and used it. No arb rights for Mangiapane. Every dollar mattered that off season to get Tkachuk signed. Had nothing to do with the not willing to take that chance. It was fairly obvious the team expected him to vastly out perform that contract if anything by putting him on the second line.
It's not dumb to try and get paid what you are worth, I don't know where that's ever been the case.
Mangiapane firmly falls into the underrated category, especially at $715k.

BT does not sign players long term for under market as a general rule. We usually wait and let them perform and then pay them at market rates. Plus we used a lot of that potential money on Michael Stone and Milan Lucic, so not much room left for longterm value signings. I suspect we will sign him to a two year deal at 2.7 million a year this time.

I like a lot about mangiapane but I would be happy to see the flames sell high on him if it improves the team.
Question for me is can he be effective on the 3rd line. I think Dube firmly takes a hold of a top 4 wingers on the team role, this upcoming season.
I am going into this week expecting that the flames top 2 lines of forwards won't be changed. As such, I am preparing for disappointment....

I like Mangi, definitely want to keep him on the team. The way he digs in the corners reminds me of Marchand. Mainly because of how they can retrieve and protect the puck.
Don’t jump all over this as a player comparison. I know the rest of their respective games are a ways apart.
They talked about him a bit on 960.
I would be willing to do a 6 x $3.5, however I don’t know if he would accept that. Might be betting high on himself.

How do we know that it would be selling high?
Are you certain that he doesn't have any 50+ point seasons in him?
I think he might.

Johnny - Monahan - Anderson
Tkatchuk - Backlund - Lindholm
Mangi - Bennett - Virtanen
I like the looks of that top 9. Good mix of skill and size.

Stay clear of Virtanen is the word on the street.
