Now I'm not even sure that it was individual growth from Hanifin, it may very well have been related to simply playing him with someone other than Hamonic - but that's another reason why I'm not moving Hanifin. There's no pressure on us to move Hanifin at this stage. The move would only be done if it clearly makes the team better - does OEL do that? It's not a clear upgrade, and definitely not one that would need us to include a 1st round pick.

If the Flames sign another top 4 RHD man IMO there is lots of pressure to move Hanifin IMO. I can't see them exposing Gio no matter how much we all think it makes sense to do so, and you don't want to be forced into trying to deal Hanifin next off season right before an expansion draft from a position of weakness. Plus adding another top 4 RHD man will make it very difficult to shore up the top 6 and goaltending while staying under the cap.

OEL at 6.1 (25% retained)?
Regardless, I agree the more appealing option would be to move him for top 6 help or a RHS D like Dumba.

He looks like the same player that arrived two seasons ago to me. I have a hard time believing anyone would take him over his draft D peers (Provorov, Chabot, Wierinski) five years later.

I believe he has loads of upside and would be very patient. Very high end skater with good vision.
He is far better defensively and competes harder, over the past two seasons.
Top pairing upside, IMO. Liked him a lot in the recent playoffs.
I have not watched the other D you mentioned, as much.
All 4 of them have lots of room and time to get better.

He then went on to say, neither the Canucks or Bruins have those assets. He then said if OEL expands his list Calgary has exactly that, Hanifin and 19.
Would you do:
OEL 25% retained - Hanifin + 19?
Would adding Dvorak to the mix make it more palatable?
|
Adding Dvorak makes it a good deal to me and even Hall’s rights if he can be signed would have me ready to pull the trigger on the deal.

Extremely unlikely.
Gio’s on and off ice contributions all but assure he will remain a Flame. Sending him to Arizona (not that he would accept that anyway) would be like kicking your own mother down a flight of stairs.

In 2 years playing with Hamonic, I saw no improvement. In 10 games playing with Andersson I saw a different player.
It depends on what you believe is the cause...Brodie sucked with Hamonic...and returned when he played with Gio. If you are in this camp and think that Hamonic is the black hole...then you value Hanifin higher and want to give him more time.
Everyone playing with Andersson has looked great. If you are in this camp...then you likely believe that sell high is a good option.

Fair enough.
I did come across an article over last offseason, I believe, where Daryl Belfry (well known hockey trainer) spoke very highly of Hanifin. Basically said he has all the tools to be elite. I guess it is a question of whether he can put it together.
Is he Michelle Petit, all the tools no tool box, or a late blooming Brent Burns?

He's improved his game considerably since coming to Calgary, specifically his defensive consistency. In Carolina he was often pushed to the 3rd pairing because he was having difficultly with his defensive game so often.

It never ceases to amaze me how impatient fans are with defenseman. Over and over again.
I recall, on CP, many fans talking about Brodie's ceiling being a 5-6 guy.
Even more amazing, posters talking about Giordano's ceiling being a 5-6 guy.
Learning how to play D in the NHL takes time. Hanifin's ceiling is a top pairing guy. He may or may not get there. But suggesting a 23 year old Dman has hit his ceiling, is just crazy.

All true, and if the Flames do shop Hanifin hopefully there are many GMs that feel the same way so that Tre can get back some high end value from the trade.

Rumblings the B’s are looking to move Rask and if they are doing that as a mostly a cap dump I see it as a near perfect fit for the Avs. Something like Grubauer for Rask to free up the cap space to send a package around OEL to the Bruins.

If Rask goes to Colorado, that's one less potential destination for Markstrom, and any other goalie the Flames might be targeting.

2019/2020 Trade Speculation and Rumors 2.0
I wouldn’t do Hanafin for OEL, much less adding in the 19 OA.
And I think OEL is underrated.

Any updates on contract? Last I heard they were trying to re-sign all 3 big free agents. They haven’t signed any of them yet and time is ticking.
