Things rarely happen until the day before the draft. There will be little bits of news when some players don't receive qualifying offers, then stuff happens the day before the draft and both days off the draft, then stuff starts happening again the day before free agency. It's no different than any other off-season except this is happening in October and more condensed rather than June/July.

For sure, they're buddies with Gaudreau. Surprised he's not saying Hanifin too. Just stirring the pot

I would be happy to see Brodie return
But I won't be happy if no core changes are made.
I suspect many feel the same. You are drawing a conclusion absent actual information .

Re-signing Brodie will dramatically narrow Treliving’s options for other core-changing deals.

Johnny is the better player. He also drives our offense. The difference is at least Frost - basing trade value off last season alone is selling low on Johnny, and should not be done. Keep him if that's the best you're getting offered.
|
He's quite a bit younger, signed to a better AAV with way more years of control. He didn't really get the PP opportunities until this year, when he led the Flyers in scoring.
I doubt you'll get anything better than that. And next year, his trade value will be quite bit less, unless he has a great season.
But as I said, it's debatable. But I still feel Frost is never the difference.
Johnny might right now be the better player, but Konecny has the big age difference, the way better contract, and quite a bit more upside to improve.
Other teams actually have more leverage in any trade. Johnny's value will continue to decrease as his contract become shorter. No one has to trade for Johnny. And while Trev does not have to trade Johnny now, he likely will have to sometime down the road.

It's interesting, but the closer to the draft/UFA that we get, the more lenient I feel about the core of the club. Excluding rookies, my untradable assets are Tkachuk, Dube, Bennett, Lindholm, Andersson and Kylington.... and that's it.
For next season to be entertaining, I want to see some new faces.

Treliving says it’s a very tentative (trade) market right now. There’s a cautiousness to the market right now with people being careful.

I imagine one reason the trade market is clogged up pretty good right now is some of the pending free agents. Especially the goalie market. No sense trading a 1st for Kuemper if you can sign Markstrom or Lehner. No point trading for a top 4 Dman if you can sign one of the UFA Dmen that are still unsigned.

Bishop has had the 2nd best save % of any goalie with more than 100 starts over the last 3 seasons IIRC.
I believe Kuemper was 1st. Can't remember.
Really don't want to give up assets for a goalie though unless they can't get one of the UFA's, including Talbot.

Treliving says he hasn’t closed the door on any of his pending UFA players.
Says the ball is in his court right now to let them know where things stand.

If Dallas re-signs Khudobin, as they are rumored to want to do, Bishop becomes the most interesting trade target immediately. I remember reading an opinion article about how Dallas could maintain the momentum into next year, and bringing in a top six winger was identified as a major 'want'. Johnny was disregarded, as Dallas not having the assets to make that happen.
But if Bisop is suddenly in play... Bishop, their 1st and Ty Dellandrea would probably work for me.

On Friedman's podcast, he says that the Hanifin rumors stem from when the Flames offered Hanifin and Bennett to NJ for Hall and Vatanen. He says that he doesn't think Bennett is available anymore as he is part of what the Flames are trying to move forward.

Tkachuk was on the Cam and Strick podcast today. Nothing crazy, just talks about the off season, his injury, being in the bubble, the team, etc. It's pretty interesting to hear him talk about teams around the league. The guy is a total hockey nerd. Some of the best tidbits:
- Had to hold the door open for Paul Maurice walking back to the hotel once and he wouldn't even look at him.
- The replay that Maurice kept mentioning doesn't exist according to Tkachuk. Says the Flames never saw it and Maurice had the old "one person feed" and "HD vision".
- He tried to fight Wheeler earlier. Wheeler's response was that he'd love to, but Paul won't let him. After the Schiefele incident Tkachuk said "well, will you fight me now?"
- Says Schiefele is one of the best guys ever. They have been texting during the off season and they are buddies. Feels bad, but at the end of the day that's hockey.
- Talk about Tampa picking up Goodrow, Coleman, Schenn, Bogosian, and Maroon and how much it helped Tampa. Says Lucic provides that to the Flames.
- Battle of Alberta is the biggest rivalry in sports right now. The build up before a game is like nothing else. He loves it.
- After he stole Burns stick and took it to the bench during his rookie year Burns sent a signed stick over after the game and signed it "If you wanted a stick all you had to do was ask, love playing against you" or something like that..

I think there are many factors. The UFA market is definitely a big factor, but so is the fact most teams don't have a bunch of cap space, which has been further compounded by the flat cap and teams wanting to lower their payrolls. I read aa quote somewhere where it was a said that lots of players are available for trade, and guys that usually do have value, are being shopped for almost nothing in order to move their contracts.

That's good news. I want to see Bennett playing centre on that 3rd line.
