But the Canucks are so close to winning a Cup, I say go all in. Sutter, a couple prospects and their 2021 first rounder for OEL and Dvorak.

Probably try to get them on bridge contracts and hope the cap rises substantially in a few 3-4 years.

Is this why we have had such a challenge solving the position in any meaningful way in 8 years? Because there’s really only like maybe 1 goalie who year in year out performs reasonably consistently (Carey Price)?
|
Price isn't even top 10 in the league in career save percentage. In the last 3 years, he's only around 91.3%. He makes 10.5 mill until 2026 when he's 39.
Rask, Bishop, Vasilevski, Lehner, and Gibson normally put up better numbers than Price. Bishop, Lehner, Khudobin and Kuemper have even managed to do it while being on multiple different teams.
I'll give credit to Price for being durable. And he has had a few extremely good years.
But he's not a top 5 goalie in the league anymore. The days of Price, Lundqvist, Quick, Rinne and Miller being the best are over. It seems like the position has suddenly become a lot younger, at least at the high end.

Correct.
The only way I will be even remotely okay with this deal is if they take eriksson, what ever b level prospect we offer and virtanen while eating 50% of the contract. Anything less and I want nothing to do with it, send him to Boston.

There is a lot of value in producing consistently. The stats show this in the players that you mentioned. Another skill that is overlooked and not easily quantifiable is the outright stealing of a game. Price is excellent at this.

With goalies though you have to factor in the team though...who would have good numbers in Montreal?

Whatever their next contracts are, they have to be more then OEL’s. For a teams that has drafted so well, they’ve sure made some awful signings and piss poor trades. I hope they take on OEL and are handcuffed for years with that boat anchor of a contract.

Sounds like the Canucks are balking at the price for OEL
Irfaan Gaffar @irfgaffar
Sounds like the asking price for OEL may be a little steep for the #Canucks at this point. Doesn’t mean they are out, but there is a gap, for sure. Gotta think all parties involved including if BOS is still interested would want this done pretty quick.

I don't get the Boston rumour.
Aren't they unable to afford Krug? OEL doesn't make a lot of sense instead, does he? I can't imagine they're in a position to dump a lot of salary via a trade that they couldn't do in order to simply keep Krug.

Benning is still an idiot...his team sucking and then him picking the best ranked player with his top 10 draft pick doesn't suddenly make him a genius. In fact he botched one of the drafts and was lucky the other two worked out so well.
Losing their MVP to pick up a way overpaid Dman for 7 years seems about right

JB must be lowballing knowing that OEL only wants to go to Vancouver

I would take Krug over OEL, even if they made equal pay...

Krug is tenacious, plays well in all 3 zones, and puts up 50-60 pts/year. Yeah, OEL is a lot bigger, but it's not like he's that imposing.

Is it possible that NHL pro scouts/GMs rate OEL far better than most commentators here?
Honest question. Not trying to shade anyone here for their opinion and don't really know enough about the player, but do teams see him as a Hedman, Pietrangelo, type in the right environment?

I think that OEL is a very good player, just not close to earning that contract-and I think scouts and GMs would agree.
