The way I read it was the Leafs, Tavares and the Islanders explores it briefly but ran out of time. Unless they changed the rules through the MOU then I thought you had to have the player by the deadline the previous year to go 8 years?

Giordano was an inside the part home run.

He seems to have some legitimacy and gets really upset when people call him fake.
Personally I am all in on Markstrom and have zero desire to give up a 1st for Kuemper

Maybe if Simmonds came cheap.

It occasionally makes sense when the throw to first is offline and you slide to avoid the tag.
The problem with that is that the base runner often can’t see that the throw is offline and choose to slide until it is too late.

Depends on the situation, if the throw is off-line and going to pull the first baseman off the bag towards the plate, then getting down to slide can make a tag out very difficult, also on a close play, some believe you can get there a fraction of a second quicker if you dive.

I thought it made sense for Engelland to slide into first because that would probably hurt like hell but he probably wouldn't mind.

Well, who is being bought out? That’s how the deal happened with Nolan. It was almost like a trade for nothing with Toronto retaining salary.

Neal went 0 for 0 with 4 intentional walks, then got fooled by the old hidden ball trick all 4 times. Then he killed 2 puppies.

Pretty sure it was Phoenix who bought out Nolan, not Toronto.
I could see Victor Rask being an attractive cheap option if/when Minnesota buys him out. He has ties to the area, too. Played for the Hitmen.

Engelland got hit by a pitch, then beat up the pitcher and catcher

He played a one year contract with Phoenix before Calgary. But it was the Leafs who bought him out previously (technically they settled a dispute with him on the remainder of his contract - it wasn’t a CBA buyout). But looking back at at it, he wouldn’t have been under contract for the Leafs by the time he got to Calgary, so it was the Yotes that really got the benefit of the buyout, not the Flames.

Looking back I was never excited about Bertuzzi, Amonte or Nolan signing. I guess I thought in each case they were has-beens. I had a bit more excitement over Jagr because he’d defied the odds every year before then.

LeBrun has updated the story. He clarifies the Blues need to sign and trade for another team to get 8 years.

Sign and trade seems like a huge headache and removes part of the benefit of getting Pietrangelo, which is 0 asset cost.
That 8th year would have to back dive hard to make the added cap hit benefit worthwhile, and I can't see how it wouldn't be labelled as circumvention. Doesn't really make sense to me tbh.
