If you are willing to abide a statutory rapist, you can get some excellent trade value! The Joey Mullen trade was great too.

That's just guys who played in the NHL this past season, some of them are actually pretty good players.

I think people need to realize the magnitude of a UFA of Taylor Hall's status considering Calgary. It realistically has not happened before and may not happen again as Calgary is probably a bottom 10 (maybe 5?) choice for big name free agents. It's why I can't help but laugh when people poo-poo the idea of signing Hall... it's a prime example of "beggars can't be choosers".
Markstrom might be a different case as #1 goalies surely key on several factors, including: the city, the team's defencemen and defensive system as a whole, opportunity to play a lot of games, and in Markstrom's case I'm sure a strong Swedish contingent makes a big difference (especially if he's close friends with Lindholm as speculated).

Besides Bouwmeester and arguably Hamrlik, I can't think of any top free agents that chose the Flames. I think Bouwmeester did have some personal reasons for signing. Hamrlik, while being a really good player for us, was paid what was a king's ransom at the time. Amonte and Jagr were big names, but both were well past their primes at that point.
It's even more difficult these days because free agent pools are a lot thinner than they used to be. The really good players tend to get locked up long term. It's rare that a 28 year old recent Hart winner is available, and if there is any indication that he would consider the Flames, I think you have to take that chance.

Yup. Bouwmeester's wife was at the time a nurse in Calgary. Huge advantage when it came to signing him.

Hamrlik was a decent deal wasn’t he? $5 million over 2 years IIRC when Iginla was making $7 million?
Probably my favorite free agent signing the Flames ever made. Totally out of nowhere.

I seem to remember it being a pretty big deal that Tony Amonte chose the Flames as well, even though it never really worked out

In hind site, I think it was a really decent deal. My memory might be failing me, but I thought at the time it seemed like a lot. Maybe it was just a lot for the Flames, who had a reputation for being cheap.

Brouwer and Neal were near the top of thier FA class, though those UFA years were fairly sparse.

UFA's don't win championships. Draft picks do.

Definitely! After years of minor or no free agent signings, it really seemed like a different universe when we brought in Hamrlik, Amonte and McCarty. It was so exciting!

The sparse years are the scary ones.

Bertuzzi was damaged goods and Nolan was a cheap deal after being bought out. They weren’t prestigious signings.
BUT there aren’t a lot of big UFA signings.

All years are going to be sparse now. Players are choosing guaranteed money for longer now and then potentially forcing trades over free agency more often than not.

No, definitely not prestigious signings, but to some of us,exciting nonetheless.

Plus they have more negotiating power now. Back when the UFA age was 31, teams were happy to hand out short contracts during those peak production years. Now that a player can become a UFA at 27, if you want those peak years, they will usually demand a contract that pays them well after that.

Frankly when it comes to UFAs, Hudler may be the best one the Flames ever signed. Tanguay as a UFA was a pretty good one, along with Hamrlik and Glencross.

Almost. If only the net's dimensions were 1" more in each direction, he has like 40+ goals in each of his seasons here.
