How many times have Calgary AND Vegas been in on a player?
I remember Calgary having interest in Pacioretty, Stone, Fleury, Reaves, Tatar, and maybe a couple others. They all wound up in Vegas.
The only guy I can remember both Calgary and Vegas being interested in who wound up in Calgary was.... James Neal.

And in record time too! Its not like the flames are currently in a dark period of their history. The sad thing is that outside of the late 80s this has been our most successful stint.

I really don’t see how Toronto fits Pietro in. They’ll have to move Nylander, but even then I don’t see it happening.
And I think Vegas is just too attractive an option to pass over.
I don’t think the Flames or Leafs have a shot but I’d love to be wrong. Can’t believe the Blues are letting him walk. What piss poor management.

How does VGK fit Pietrangelo in? They are as tight as anyone to the cap even before accounting for Lehner's new deal.

Like any team the Flames will inquire if these guys are available and see if there is a fit in Calgary for them that works. The Flames don't exactly have a pile of cap space to work with so it's likely all three will get better offers elsewhere. Outside of Feaster I don't remember any Flames GM thumping his chest about how he's going to make a splash in free agency.
|
That's right, no Flames GM has bragged about how he's going to make a splash in Free Agency, and Feaster doesn't run the team. Thanks for the education.
I have no idea how you extracted this rambling post from what I said. I was simply making a comment, or joke, about the many times Tre has been close to big deals, or free agents, and couldn't close.
Go to bed, you're obviously tired.

I don't recall the Flames ever being in on Pacioretty or Tatar. Calgary was in on Fleury before Vegas had a single player, we just didn't want to give up the first round pick Pittsburgh wanted (which ended up being Tkachuk). Vegas was also not in on Neal, they didn't even offer him a contract to return.

Hmm looking back I see a TON of reports about Calgary scouting Montreal to death but nothing specifically about Max.
I was a couple years off about Tatar. Flames reportedly could have had him for Bouwmeester. I remembered him being linked to Calgary but I got the time period wrong. https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=136639
And yes, Vegas was involved in contract talks with Neal before he signed here. He rejected a 5x5 offer from Vegas. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.spo...-vegas/sn-amp/

Yeah there was a ton of wild speculation about who we were scouting on the Habs, I think people were split on whether it was Max or Galy.

Monahan for Laine? Gaudreau for Laine? That's silly talk. I'm not sure I would trade Lindholm for Laine as he's the most one dimensional player in the league and while his one dimension is a good one he's likely always going to be a complementary player and you don't trade a 1st line center or franchise winger for that.

04-09 is still a better run. Cup final, 1 division banner, 5 straight years in the playoffs
This current group has 1 division banner, 1 series victory and 4 playoff years in 6 seasons.

I wonder if the news of the Pietrangelo and Markstrom interest from the Flames is something they leaked out to try and squeeze the price on the Yotes for Kuemper and OEL?
I hope not I would rather sign these UFA’s and create that cap space by acquiring futures for our current roster players.

They're free assets and they're a lot better too.
I do not get the love for Kempner at all. If the Flames got him, I think they'd regret it.

To be fair, the list of Flames games worse than game 6 against Dallas is very short.

Those teams also felt closer to true contention with Kipper. Maybe if we’d gotten a Jokinen a few years earlier...

If I had to list the three Flames players mentioned above in order of trade value, and of course considering contracts, it would be as follows:
Lindholm
Monahan
Johnny
Johnny gets downgraded simply because he's older and most teams would consider him a two year rental and then a flight risk.
I am not a big fan of Laine for sure, but I don't get why he is a complimentary player while Johnny is a franchise winger. Johnny is also as "one dimensional" as they come, and 5 years older.
I don't think I would trade any of our three for Laine as I don't like him, and I don't think he's a particularly good teammate. But he'd have many teams interested in trading for him.

Like if you would buy a Pietrangelo jersey if he signs here!
This is our opportunity to pull a reverse McInnis on the blues. They owe us for Al and for the Golden Brett (though, I suppose you could count Gilmour as payment made for this one.)

I wouldn’t trade Lindholm for Laine. Monahan I would. Johnny I definitely would. I like Johnny and all, but Laine’s potential to be Kovalchukesque is real. He is younger and controlled. If we don’t like his contract demands in a year, you can trade him for a lot. Johnny can walk. Other than attitude, which I hope being traded helps humble Laine a bit, both are 1 dimensional, except if you were to be 1-dimensional, it’s nice to be the 1 dimension that matters most - scoring. Laine is also big. He won’t be bullied once he starts to actually work out. The potential is there!

Also, there is no way Winnipeg takes Johnny or Monahan straight up for Laine anyways.

Probably not Johnny because he won't stay but Chevy would absolutely do Monahan. He couldn't wait to get that fax to head office.
