You mean as opposed to Hanifin who sat at the draft all the way until 5th overall?

Hanafin never had the potential that Jones had.

Comparing Hanafin to Jones will literally just get your own hopes up.

No one says they are the same guy. But Jones took his time to progress, and that might be the case with Hanifin.

I didn't. You are trying to argue that Hanifin didn't have the pedigree. He did. You were wrong. You're wrong about 23 year old defensemen, and now you're trying to massage the truth about Hanifin's draft pedigree.

He wasn't Jones, but he was more highly regarded than Hughes, for example. He was the first defenseman taken in the draft, ahead of Provorov and Werenski.

Hanafin is such a smooth skater. Feels like he has been in the league for 10 years. At times forget how young he is versus his peers.

I am happy with Hanifin, he is good value and just needs to play with a good partner. No need to look for problems that the Flames do not have. There are enough real weaknesses to address.

If Winnipeg loses out on Dumba, what about something around Hanifin and Elhers?

Hanifin had a ton of hype coming into the draft and was thought to be the 3rd pick after McDavid and Eichel. Talked about as an elite 2 way Dman in the making

Agreed.

Tough to get a good young center though, and if you find one that someone is willing to move it'll probably take more than just Hanifin to get him.

Since I think a Hanifin trade to NJD is on the radar, what about Zacha?

Zacha + 18 I would consider but does Zacha bump Backlund down the lineup or just take Bennett’s spot.

I think Dylan Strome could be a target and someone we could get for Hanifin and he had a 57pt season as a 21 year old. With Dach coming up Chicago is rumored to be interested in moving him.

Id probably do Zacha , Mueller and 18 from NJ for Hanifin.

That seems about right for what they're getting.

Don't care about any opinions on Hanifin (to each their own), but you are completely wrong in saying that Hanifin didn't have the same type of hype or expectations going into the draft as Jones.

Trading Hanifin makes no sense. He is young, cost controlled, and already a No4 on a contending team and No3 on a decent team. He has not made the jump to a No2 dman yet, but he has time.

Valimaki has NOT displaced him yet!

Hanifin was ranked #3 by central scouting in the 2015 draft after McDavid and Eichel...you better believe he had the hype

Don't go after Strome. He will be a plug here without better playmakers.

We should try and pry Ekblad for Hanifin. Gaudreau could be a good fit there too in a larger deal

I’m a big Hanifin advocate...but...

Sam Bennett was ranked #1 by CS in 2014.

Tough job evaluating 18 year old kids.

Only reason the Flames move Hanifin (a good, 23 year old top-3 defender) is if it’s part of a bigger move to improve/change the makeup of the team (the hope with all trades). He’s far from being untouchable, and he’d be moved because he holds value and the Flames truly believe in Valimaki (they do).

I think it’s fair to say Hanifin doesn’t play with much of an edge - and sharpening this team’s edge may very well be a priority this off-season. We don’t have enough defenceman that lay the body/impose their physicality in board battles - I could reasonably see a desire to change that.

Ristolainen and OEL were #1 and #3 last season in hits by d-men last season (Gudas was #2) - and both hold more offensive capability than Hanifin has shown to date for the Flames. I would 100% understand moving Hanifin so long as the team has a move that brings in one of these two players.

Dumba doesn’t fulfill the size nor the physicality that they may be searching for - but he does have the offensive ability, and getting that PP QB has to be a desire (Barrie rumours, renting Gus). Dumba fills that need to be sure.
