Other than the obvious contract of Lucic our forward group cap hits don’t look that bad.

Defence looks decent as well, maybe now Gio is a bit high, but it wasn’t that long ago some were calling that a value contract.

Not overpaying on goalies.

How are we in cap jail compared to say Toronto?

I think most of the team is on fair contracts. The only real bargain contract right now is Lindholm. The team needs more players on ELC contracts. They will have Dube, and Valimaki who will hopefully outplay their contracts for next season. The problem is not that Lucic is overpaid, but how much he is overpaid(by roughly $3M in my estimate). The team also still has the Brouwer($1.5M x 2years), and Stone($1.167M) buyouts.

I believe the Flames could use their capspace to bring everyone(excluding rentals) back from this season. The problem is that the Flames are trying to improve and want to upgrade their roster. You currently have almost $17M, with a roster size of 14. You need 8-9 players including a starting goalie($3-6M), a top 4 defenseman($4-5M), and sign Mangiapane($2.5-4.5M). All of a sudden you don't have that much capspace left and you have to start compromising. If you want to upgrade at forward then perhaps just get a backup for Rittich, or try to play Valimaki in a top 4 role.

The bottom line is that the Flames have enough cap space to keep things in status quo. They don't seem to have enough cap space to improve without going the trade route.

Compared to Toronto we are in the opposite of cap jail, the Leafs cap situation is one of the worst in the NHL. They have no depth and no defense. They even had to trade away more of their depth just to add cap space in order to try and sign defensemen.

Yeah, their current capfriendly number looks OK only because they have 4 D on close to league min deals. Either those guys can play above value or their D will be terribad.

Don’t pay attention to the OEL rumors if you want to stay pumped.

The Leafs are more or less boned IMO. They have less than 7 million in space and need a top 4 defensemen. I actually think that they need two because Holl is not ideally a top 4 defenseman. They also need at least 1 top 6 forward.

The best thing the Leafs could do, is trade Marner to a team like Minnesota for players that would change their playoff identity. Maybe a package around Dumba and Zuccarello.

I think OEL could bounce back. I would be ecstatic to get him.

I like OEL, but not at that AAV and there is too much term remaining for the Coyotes to eat any salary.

There might just be a Gio trade that would work. Not for Marner obviously.

I don't think there is a Gio trade there, the Leafs need RD, they are more likely to give up a pick for the negotiating rights to Brodie or Hamonic.

Nothing because they couldn’t afford both

Wouldnt mind the Flames trying to sign Galchenyuk. Then move lindholm to center and make a big package with monahan plus a 1st and something for soon to be rfa Laine

This set of ideas is spun off from my post in the Gaudreau proposal thread. The suggestions are a combination of what I would like to see happen, and what I expect to see happen.

Chronological order
  • Trade rights for TJ Brodie to Maple Leafs for rights to Tyson Barrie
    • Sign Tyson Barrie, 5 years @ $5,000,000
  • Trade Mikael Backlund and 2nd in 2020 to Arizona for Darcy Kuemper and the Rights to Taylor Hall
    • Sign Taylor Hall, 7 years @ 7,250,000
  • Trade Johnny Gaudreau and Rights to Oliver Kylington to Boston for Jake DeBrusk, Ondrej Kase and a 2021 1st round pick.
    • Sign Jake DeBrusk, 3 years @ $2,750,000
  • Trade rights to Mark Jankowski to Buffalo for a 5th in 2020
  • Derek Grant and Carson Soucy, 1 year @ $1,000,000 each
  • Re-sign Mangiapane, 2 years @ 2,250,000
  • Re-sign Rieder, 1 year @ 800,000
  • Re-sign Gawdin, Kirkland, Lomberg, Parsons, Froese & Nielsen, 1 year @ $700,000 each

Hall - Monahan - Tkachuk
DeBrusk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Dube - Bennett - Kase
Lucic - Ryan - Grant

Giordano - Barrie
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Mackey

Kuemper - Rittich

Bench - Soucy (D), Reider (F)

Yuck. I wouldn't trade Monahan for Laine straight up

Why don't we just sign Brodie, who is better than Barrie, to the same deal?

Brodie is so important to the Flames that I honestly don't understand the idea of trying to compete without re-signing him. Barrie doesn't provide half of what Brodie does for this team.

Barrie is not good defensively, but Brodie is. If it's not true that Brodie wants to play in the East, we should at least try to sign him.
