Since N26 said we were going to expand the trade options today, here's my kick at the can:
To CBJ:
Johnny Gaudreau
Adam Ruzicka
2nd round pick
To CGY:
Oliver Bjorkstrand
David Savard
Liam Foudy
1st round pick
Cap hits are close to a wash.
Flames swap Gaudreau and Bjorkstrand on protected list. If Savard re-signs, they protect Anderson, Hanifin, Savard.
Why Calgary does the deal:
Get a natural RW who can immediately slot into the top six (something the team has been after for years).
Get an underrated defensive stalwart RHS to fill the hole at RD at a lower cap hit than any comparable RD they’ll sign as a UFA.
Get a skilled, blazingly fast recent 1st round (#18 OA) prospect who’s NHL ready, and who doesn’t need to be protected in the expansion draft, along with another mid-1st round pick in a deep draft.
Why Calgary doesn’t do the deal:
Obviously giving up the best player in the deal.
Savard is one year away from UFA. They'd want to be confident they can re-sign him.
With no guarantee Foudy or the 1st rounder turn into difference-makers, the deal could look bad in a few years.
Why Columbus does the deal:
Get a highly skilled winger who basically replaces the one they lost when Panarin bolted.
Don’t give up a core piece.
More secure expansion draft situation as Gavrikov can now be protected without going with a 4D protected list.
Why Columbus doesn’t do the deal:
Losing #3D in Savard leaves big hole at RD.
Giving up a 1st round pick and a player recently drafted in the 1st round is a big hit to a prospect pool already badly depleted by trading away a 1st and two 2nd round picks in recent years (which is why Ruzicka and Calgary’s 2nd rounder are included).
Gaudreau might not be a good fit for Tortorella’s defence-first lunchbucket team ethos.

If you are talking about a deal with the Rangers, there is a pretty interesting name that may very well be available if Larry Brooks is to be believed.
Quote:
Here is another reason, perhaps the most significant one, that the Rangers won’t be signing impending restricted free agent Tony DeAngelo to a multi-year contract and instead are seeking to trade the 24-year-old righty defenseman:
That is because a contract of longer than one year for DeAngelo would all but ensure losing 20-year-old righty defenseman Nils Lundkvist to unrestricted free agency on June 2, 2022, without ever getting the Swede to Broadway.
Teams hold exclusive rights to European-born draft picks through the fourth June 1 following their selection, per the CBA. Lundkvist was selected 28th overall in 2018 with the first-rounder obtained from Tampa Bay in the package for Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller. So, the Rangers hold his rights through June 1, 2022.
What do you think the odds would be of the highly regarded Swede signing in New York next summer, or the summer after that, knowing the Blueshirts have Jacob Trouba, Adam Fox and DeAngelo lined up long term on the right side of the blue line with free agency and a clearer path elsewhere to the NHL available on the open market?
|
https://nypost.com/2020/09/12/nils-l...tony-deangelo/
A RS Dman who is 24 years old and still an RFA, albeit with Arb rights, and was trending to a 64 point season.
He will command fairly big $$ on any long term deal, but maybe they could bridge him until Gio is retired and there is a big hole on the right side at this point.
Buchnevich and Deangelo for Gaudreau and Kylington perhaps?

His stats this year were great but I suspect if he stays with the Rangers he losses powerplay time to Fox this year and 5-on-5 time to Fox, Lindgren and eventually Lundqvist. He may have just had an outlier year.
Defensively he is below average.
He, and his agent, are going to want 60-point defenseman money
That, essentially means, you are buying high on a guy with at least four potential red flags.
I don't want DeAngelo

I still think that Philly around Konecny (Frost or Patrick & a 1st) is the best we can do which as noted above is not bad.
Gaudreau-Couturier-Giroux
Lindblom-Hayes-Voracek
JVR-Laughton-Farabee
Tkachuk-Monahan-Lindholm
Dude-Bennett-Konecny
Mangiapane-Backlund-UFA
Lucic-Ryan-Gawdin
If the deal has to get bigger I am okay with a few players but this should be the start. Also if you think I got Bennett and Backlund backwards fine but the combo is what I would like to see. This should make us more balanced and also could help get philly over the hump in the next two years.
Sorry I am late to the party but saw this thread late and took some time to read through. I have yet to fine a trade that works for NJ with the exception of 7th straight up as the starting point. Maybe Guadreau & 19th for 7th and Merkley?

We agree.
I didn’t word it very well.
I was trying to say that it would probably take more than Johnny and a second pick, coming from Flames, for Flyers to acquiesce.

New Teams to consider part 1
We are going to add six teams to the thread today. I've divided them into two groups and the first is:
WE ARE NEARING THE END OF OUR WINDOW
=================================================
Boston
FACTS:
Approximately 540 km from family home
Johnny has a strong hockey connection to the city
19 NHL players signed for 2020-21. A few on the CapFriendly list are borderline (Anton Blidh, Jérémy Lauzon)
Makes up a cap hit of $67 069 036 so cap space of $14,430,964
Significant UFAs- Torey Krug, Zdeno Chara, Joakim Nordström
Significant RFAs - Jake Debrusk, Matt Grzelcyk
$5.0 million+ contracts - Krejčí (7.25) Bergeron (6.875), Pastrňák (6.67) Marchand (6.125), Coyle (5.25), Rask (7.0)
ISSUES/OPINION
Clearly at the end of their window. Could be the last year they are a serious contender unless they start retooling. Publicly acknowledged by Chara and Krejčí.
Most of the core, Bergeron, Marchand, Chara, Krejčí and Rask will be 33 or older next season.
Even if they get Chara cheap (which is somewhat likely) they will have a hard time re-signing Krug who has taken hometown discounts in the past and stated that he won’t this time.
They also have to be wary of upcoming contracts for McAvoy and Carlo when negotiating with Krug.
Their prospect pool has some names but there are several that may end up being tweeners (Senyshyn, Steen, Frederic, Zbořil, Vladař)
Ondřej Kaše was ineffective by the counting stats after the trade. 17GP. 0G, 4A, 6PIM -1 despite an over 60% offensive zone start ratio. This calls into question whether he really is a top 6 guy. His corsi numbers were generally good but many Boston players can make that claim
=================================================
Washington
FACTS:
Approximately 215 km from family home (basically the same as the New York teams)
17 NHL players signed for 2020-21.
Makes up a cap hit of $$72,599,877 so cap space of $8,900,123
Significant UFAs- Holtby, Dillion, Gudas, Kovalchuk
Significant RFAs - Siegenthaler, Boyd
$5.0 million+ contracts - Ovechkin (9.54), Bäckström (9.2), Kuznetzov (7.8) Oshie (5.75), Wilson (5.17), Carlson (8.0), Orlov (5.1)
ISSUES/OPINION
Also some public acknowledgment that they are at the end of their championship window.
Several contracts that will probably be burdens before they are done (Bäckström, Oshie, Eller, Hagelin)
What happens if the net duo of Samsonov-Copley falters? Re-signing Holtby looks near impossible without some salary dumps
=================================================
Pittsburgh
FACTS:
Approximately 525 km from family home
18 NHL players signed for 2020-21.
Makes up a cap hit of $71,650,175, so cap space of $9,849,825 (includes Juuso Riikola and Chad Ruhwedel)
Significant UFAs- Schultz, Sheary, Marleau
Significant RFAs - Murray, Jarry, Simon, McCann
$5.0 million+ contracts - Malkin (9.5), Crosby (8.7), Letang (7.25) Guentzel (6.0), Hörnqvist (5.3), Zucker (5.5), Orlov (5.1)
ISSUES/OPINION
End of their championship window dependant on how long Crosby, Malkin and Letang can remain elite.
Probably the most aggressive GM in the league at making roster changes. Has made 2 in the past 2 weeks
Which 2 of their 3 NHL goalies are they keeping? Seems Jarry is almost for sure and Murray the one to go but it could change
Prospect pool is pretty empty. Samuel Poulin and PO Joseph only ones rated above mid-level (maybe Björkqvist too)
Have already traded away 7 of their 2020 and 2021 draft picks including both firsts
=================================================
Second group of three will be up soon-ish

The Bruins would have to unload literally every chip that they have.
Ondrej Kase (covers not quite half the cap of JG. The rest is a Bruins problem)
Jack Studnicka (best prospect. Probably an A-)
First 2021
Second 2020

1) we give up by far the best player
2) their 1st will likely be 24-31
3) we acquire 2 forwards that need to be protected in the expansion draft (in exchange for one)

1) Yes we do, but I am of the belief if we trade Gaudreau, we will also be signing Hall.
2) Yes, it will probably be a late first.
3) Yes, they need to be protected. But there is a full season and parts of two offseasons to make an additional move regarding expansion.

Just because you are hoping to sign Hall, doesn't mean you should settle for less in a Gaudreau trade.
And there are no guarantees with the Hall signing. In fact, it is unlikely (much less than 50% likelihood)

New Teams to consider part 2
Here's the second group of 3 teams added today to suggest trades with.
I am calling this group the:
WE ARE IN OUR WINDOW SO GIVE US YOUR BEST PLAYER FOR NEXT TO NOTHING PLEASE
They are:
=================================================
Carolina
FACTS:
Approximately 660 km from family home
17 NHL players signed for 2020-21. A few on the CapFriendly list are borderline
Makes up a cap hit of $73,717,739 so cap space of $7,782,261
Significant UFAs - JWilliams (probably retires?), TvanRiemsdyk, SVatanen, AForsberg
Significant RFAs - WFoegele, HFleury,
$5.0 million+ contracts - Aho (8.454) JStaal (6.0), Teräväinen (5.4) Niederreiter (5.25), DHamilton (5.75), Slavin (5.3), Skjei (5.25)
ISSUES/OPINION
They have some of the better value for money contracts in the league. Such as Slavin. Trocheck (4.75) and especially Pesce (4 more years at 4.025!)
Just a wonderful group of defenseman with Jake Bean on the way. They lose Edmundson and probably Vatanen for almost nothing this summer and barely blink an eye.
Is their goaltending good enough? Sometimes it is and sometimes it seems inadequate.
Don’t seem to have any forward prospects close other than Morgan Geekie as Necas and especially Svechnikov are already established
One of the teams rumoured (unsubstantiated) to be on a below-the-cap budget this year
=================================================
Columbus
FACTS:
Approximately 785 km from family home
The CapFriendly roster for 2020-21 is a little off, listing Texier, Foudy and Bemström as AHLers which seems unlikely and Matteau and Peeke as NHLers which is also unlikely (though Peeke is close).
Recalculating then to say they have 21 NHL players signed for 2020-21.
With a cap hit of $69 700 000 so cap space of $11,800,000 once you put Dubunsky on LTIR
Significant UFAs- none. Seriously. They only have 2 UFAs in their entire organization, both of whom are bottom 4 AHL defenseman.
Significant RFAs - Dubois, JAnderson, VGavrikov, D Shore, K Stenlund
$5.0 million+ contracts - Atkinson (5.875), Foligno (5.5), Nyquist (5.5) Jones (5.4) and Dubinsky (5.85)
Not a single contract over $6 million. Wow!
ISSUES/OPINION
Are they in their window? You could argue “no” but they beat Tampa and Toronto in playoff situations the last two years and have a mostly young core so I think they are.
The Josh Anderson situation has some complexity but it is hard to believe they won't get something useful out of it one way or another.
That 21 NHLers number becomes 26 when you add the RFAs. Let’s take a moment to give Kekalainen some applause.
Dubois will probably crack the $6.0 barrier (and Jones and Werenski soon after) but it’s a great time to get a #1 Cte signed to an 8-year deal. Flat-cap discount time.
If they sign Gavrikov (likely) that's 8 defenseman under 30 with more than 2300 regular season games (Kukan 77 and Gavrikov 69 the only ones under 200).
They added Mikhail Grigorenko from the KHL for a cheap 1-year deal. He definitely has potential to do what Nichushkin did for Colorado this year as far as secondary scoring and special teams play
Two good goalies and 2-3 well-thought of goalie prospects
If you do count Stenlund, Texier, Foudy and Bemström graduated then the prospect pool is quite thin behind Peeke
=================================================
Toronto
FACTS:
Approximately 800 km from family home
18 NHL players signed for 2020-21.
Makes up a cap hit of $75,393,533, so cap space of $6,106,467
Significant UFAs- TBarrie, CCeci, KClifford, JSpezza
Significant RFAs - IMikheyev, ERodriques, DMalgin, FGauthier, JBracco?
$5.0 million+ contracts - Tavares (11.0), Matthews (11.63), Marner (10.89) Nylander (6.96), Muzzin (5.625), Reilly (5.0), Anderssen (5.0)
ISSUES/OPINION
Most top-heavy salary structure in the league and may be the team most restricted by the unexpected flat cap
Only have two defensemen signed who would be considered average or better.
Therefore fairly dependent on two of Sandin, Liljegren and Dermott to take a big step in 2020-21
Is Kyle Dubas the smartest guy in the room after all? How hot is his seat?
Have piles of money which allows them to make moves that most other teams can’t.
Prospect pool is middle of the pack with some good possibilities like Ian Scott(G), Filip Hållander(Cte) and others
Highest ratio of dickheads in fan base by a wide margin despite efforts by Oiler fans in the last few years.

Except I don't think it's settling for less. I am very high on both DeBrusk and Kase, especially DeBrusk.
I also am not interested in trading Gaudreau until after free agency in case we cannot sign Hall, which is why I included a 2021 pick and not 2020 (but I guess they don't have a 2020 anyway)

I think Crown's Boston proposal is the best one yet in this thread.
It's realistic, it takes needs into account, the cap works and it prioritizes a win-now return on budget contracts that are deeply desirable to the Flames.

Flames trade:
- Giordano
- Gaudreau
Hurricanes trade:
- Hamilton (1yr left)
- Trochek (2yr left)
Carolina takes the gamble with Gio having a cap hit lower than what Hamilton will demand.
Flames add two right hand shots who can score. Re-signing Hamilton fills the hole left by losing Brodie, and we dress an overall lower cap blue line (specifically the 3rd pair).
Edit:
Lineup below includes the Hall dream, which they gain space for in the swap. With enough left over to bring in another 1b goalie like they love to do.
Flames top two lines each have a Left and Right hand faceoff option, as well as a defensively minded forward. Third line could be dynamite.
Hall - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Trochek
Mangiapane - Bennett - Dube
Lucic - Ryan - Buddy
Valimaki - Hamilton
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - UFA

Bold.
Bring Hamilton back seems very bold.
For Gio no less. So bold
Too bold for me but I am loving the contribution.

BOS
DeBrusk + Studnicka + 2021 1st for Gaudreau --> Similar to the Rangers package I made (post #128), a middle 6 winger + ‘A’ prospect + 1st round pick. DeBrusk needs a change of scenery, Studnicka would be as ready as 2021/2022 to start making an impact, and the 2021 1st can be used to either acquire another core piece as a good sweetener, or to restock our bare prospect cupboards.
WAS
Vrana + Leason + 2020 1st for Gaudreau --> Vrana's speed and LW/RW versatility could be beneficial to Calgary. Could potentially explode with a few more minutes of ice time. If you can get McMichael instead of the 2020 1st and change Leason to a 2020 2nd I would prefer that deal but I went with this one because I feel that Washington would rather keep McMichael for the future.
PIT
Really hard one to do, but I just made one up:
Letang (10% retained) + Murray + Rust for Gaudreau + Jankowski + 2021 3rd --> Letang and Giordano as a pairing has always intrigued me. We wouldn't be able to shed cap in this deal because Pittsburgh is already trying to. We gain some cap but fill in a RD, G, and RW hole. Would probably leave us out of the Hall sweepstakes though, however, imagine Letang QBing PP1. We could always flip Letang to another team too.
Response to post 194
CAR
Jake Bean (or Haydn Fleury, whoever Carolina prefers to trade) + Toronto's 1st round pick (13th OA) + Trochek for Gaudreau and Jankowski —> Carolina has the cap space and the prospects/picks to make this happen. Gaudreau with Aho and Svechnikov would be lethal. Or, Gaudreau could even get J. Staal going on the 2nd line.
CBJ
Anderson + Savard + Foudy + 2020 1st for Gaudreau + Kylington + 2022 4th - super quantity for quality trade, but the quantity can be quality in such short time. Very similar to Cliff Fletcher's deal on post #181
TOR
Andersen + Nylander + Pittsburgh's 2020 1st (15th OA) for Gaudreau and Giordano - Probably the biggest blockbuster I made from the trades regarding Gaudreau. We move on from arguably the two biggest impact players the Flames have had in this decade. But, we get the best goalie in a Flames sweater since Kipper, a top 6 RW that has a long term deal, and a great pick in this draft. Toronto would have 3 top D (Rielly, Muzzin, Gio) to eat up a lot of minutes. Gaudreau playing with either Tavares or Matthews would give Toronto a lethal winger playing with a franchise center on two separate lines (if you separated Marner with the other franchise C).

Washington.
Jacob Vrana + Connor McMicheal
for Johnny Gaudreau + 2nd 2020
if they would do this, you take it and run. Vrana is a step down from Gaudreau, but I don't think that he has yet reached his peak. McMicheal has a very high ceiling. In my estimation, it's either this deal or nothing, as there is nothing else in Washington's system worth looking at, and they won't part with an established peice.
Toronto.
There is literally nothing on their team worth the cap hit.
Carolina.
Nino Neiderreiter + Ryan Suzuki + 13th overall 2020
for
Johnny Gaudreau
It feels strange going back to the well with Carolina, but the last trade worked out for both teams, and there is a relationship there. Nino is about a prototypical middle six RW as you can get, but a little overpaid. He has worn out his welcome in Carolina, but I think that there is more in the tank, and it balances salaries. Suzuki is in a tough spot for the organization, being behind Aho and Necas. He could be stolen and has top line potential. The number 13 pick is a nice one. I think that there will be a faller in the draft this year, because of parity in the top 15.
One useful piece and two very high end lottery tickets. Carolina is at the top of my wish list. People could point to Cozens and 8th from Buffalo, but I don't think that they give that up for JG, making this the winner IMO.
Columbus.
Boone Jenner + Liam Foudy + Kirill Marchenko
for
Johnny Gaudreau
Columbus needs a second line centre, and not really a winger. I could still see them going for JG, but would they add their first to this offer? I don't think so. Jenner is a heart and soul player, Foudy is fast as hell, and Marchenko is in the KHL for at least another season, but could be Radulov good.
