I think that’s the essence of it. I’m not aware of the report that he is so trusted and popular with ownership, at least more so than any other GM.

When do you think that well starts to run a little dry? Are you surprised he wasn’t allowed to buy out Neal? It would have saved real dollars and the bigger impact is to the management of the cap. That doesn’t sound like a vote of confidence.

Or maybe the story isn’t true.

I think it depends on the definitions of the roles, but for the most part i suspect where a POHO is brought in over the top of the GM, thus dramatically reducing their own powers - it likely ends in that GM leaving.

Treliving was extended after making the Neal/Lucic trade, so if any of his goodwill with ownership was tarnished by the incident then it seems to have been restored.

I would like to think that ownership has a longer view of the franchise than fans do, and is willing to give the GM the time and resources he needs to accomplish it. I am of the opinion that most NHL GMs are replaced prematurely, and that while team building can be achieved in five or six years it can also take a lot longer.

Buying out or not buying out is more of a financial decision, as opposed to a vote or non vote of confidence.
Every GM operates within a set of constraints, known to them and ownership. Perhaps there are constraints around how many buyouts, the price of them, etc.
We don't know.
But I don't view that as a sign of confidence.
If they didn't have confidence in him - he would be fired.

I think the Flames owners will give Treliving a long leash. The thing Tre has going for him is pedigree. The owners are probably all buddies or are familiar with his dad from the business world and they probably think the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Treliving also represents the organization well, doesn’t get himself into much trouble and when he does, like the Peters incident, handles it well.

I think as long as Treliving makes the playoffs regularly, his job is probably safe.

Sounds like the Caps have interviewed Gallant as well as Babcock to go along with Laviolette.

I can only hope Tre gets one of Lavs or Gallant.

Friedman keeps saying the Flames are going to announce something soon, but I have a gut feeling everyone is waiting for this shoe to drop. The Caps job is a lot more appealing than the Flames job for a veteran coach.

Part of me thinks the flames won't announce Ward returning until after or right before a big trade.

Hopefully the Caps hire Babs. But I also believe Babs is unhireable because of what teams will have to pony up to toronto to sign him.

Has anyone even reported that the Flames interviewed anyone?

No. Friedman did say they would probably announce the coach in the next week. My guess it’s Ward because Friedman didn’t mention anybody.

It's pretty obvious that Treliving has other candidates in mind, and if he had it his way, Ward would not be returning as HC. Otherwise it would have been announced already.

Which will make it very disappointing when Ward does return.

Why would they have to pony up anything to Toronto? The Leafs aren't poor, but that doesn't mean that it some team wants to pay him instead of them, they wouldn't go for it.

Besides, has a team ever refused someone else to hiring a coach or something that they fired?

As for the Flames, since they haven't reportedly interviewed anyone, that suggests Ward will be back.

I think we have to be careful saying "they haven't reportedly interviewed anyone".
More accurately - there haven't been any reports that they have interviewed anyone, nor have there been any reports that they aren't interviewing anyone.

Maybe we've been waiting this whole time just to hear that Ward will not be HC next season, and that the search for a new coach officially begins, lol.
I'd still probably take that news over Ward returning as HC.

Have there been any cases where a team has a head coach, and news leaks that they are actively interviewing other people? I can't recall. I can see Treliving being extra cautious about not wanting any inside information leaked, out of respect to Ward.

I am not sure what they discussed when they named Ward interim coach. Maybe they told him the interim HC tag reverted back to AC once the season concluded.

I know it is a completely different situation, but I recall the Flames were open about actively pursuing a permanent HC when Al MacNeil was named the interim coach after Gilbert was fired.

It feels like if it was going to be Ward they would have announced that by now?

I have a feeling it could be like when Kennan came here and they bring a guy like Sutter to take over the current coaching staff and Ward goes back to associate

Ward has said he'd be open to remaining as an associate coach.

My gut is that he'd be open to staying on if the new head coach agreed. Probably would just get a slight raise still, and there would be an agreement that he would be able to interview for any head coach job if the opportunity came up.
