I'm viewing my opinion on how he plays, not what spot he's picked.

eklunds last post reiterates Hall really wanting to come to Calgary. Feels weird reading about a player actually aiming to got to Calgary as his first choice....

Personally I have mixed feelings on Hall. The only part I'm skeptical about is his ability to carry the team and be the identity of the team from a scoring standpoint. It could be a bias carrying over since his Oiler days, but since moving on he's produced like crazy. Also his stature isn't very large and he doesn't do anything particularly remarkable. Almost like Tavares. His results speak for itself though, so from that point of view I want him on the team as he'd instantly be the number one scoring option.

Watching him the last season hasn't changed my mind that he is a one dimensional player, but he is very good at that one dimension, making up for his shortfalls.
A long heavy contract worries me only because if his foot speed ever abandons him, I'm not sure how effective he would continue to be.

Eklund has little to no credibility but he has been steadfast in his Hall to Calgary rumors. He has written about it at least 5 times but it feels like more.
Here is my attempt at a retool
New Jersey: Gaudreau
Flames: 7th overall, Zacha, Smith
4.5M in cap space gained
Buffalo: Monahan
Flames: Cozens, Montour (sign Montour to a 5 year 4.25M contract)
$2M in cap space created (assumes Cozens is in Stockton)
Trade Rittich to a team that is looking for a tandem option. Maybe even something like Rittich to the Canucks for Markstroms rights?
Trade Ryan to a team looking for a 3C for draft pick (3rd+5th rounders)
Trading Ryan and Rittich opens up nearly $6M in cap space.
Lastly I would trade Hanifin to the Habs for Domi or the Blackhawks for Strome.
Sign Hall+Markstrom
In summary
In: Hall, Markstrom, Zacha, Smith, Montour, 7th overall, Cozens, Strome/Domi
Out: Gaudreau, Monahan, Hanifin, Rittich, Talbot, Hamonic, Brodie, Talbot

I’d only be interested in Taylor Hall if he came cheap. The last thing this organization needs is a cap crippling injury prone player. Treliving has already signed albatross contracts in the past that he’s regretted, so he should be weary of making another mistake.
The good thing is, Hall seems to only be interested in playing with a contender and in a hockey market, so that should theoretically take out a lot of interested parties. Of the teams that do fit the bill, I don’t think a lot of teams can afford him with their impending RFAs, so the Flames could become one of the only viable suitors which should give Treliving leverage. Perhaps even a below market value could get it done.

I didn't like Boudreau either until I started reading about him. I changed my mind after reading some articles on him after his firing from Minnesota.
Quote:
And Boudreau, who was 158-110-35 in three-plus seasons with the Wild and ranks 22nd in NHL history with 567 regular-season wins and third with a .635 points percentage, made it clear how much he hopes to coach again.
“If I could coach yesterday, I’d do it,” Boudreau said. “I get mad, and instead of feeling sorry for myself, I want to get right back into it. In the past, I’ve gotten lucky that I got back into it right away. When I came here four years ago, I hoped this was my last job. I hoped to be here 10 years. It didn’t work out that way, but I know I can still coach.”
|
Quote:
“We’re addicts. We love this sport. We love this profession. Coaching, teaching, winning,” Boudreau said on this chilly, sunny Sunday, talking passionately about how he craves another crack behind an NHL bench. “The thrill of winning is a real drug and wanting to compete. I’ve been doing it my whole life.”
|
Quote:
He’s 65, and even though Calgary, Dallas, San Jose, New Jersey, Seattle and undoubtedly more teams will be looking for coaches this offseason, he hopes owners and GMs don’t feel he’s too old.
“I don’t feel old. I feel young,” Boudreau said. “It’s not like you’re old and you don’t have energy. I’m the first one at work every day, I go in every day on off-days, I’m doing this all the time, thinking hockey all the time, so I feel very young. And anytime you go to a new job, you’re rejuvenated and you work harder.”
|
I can't quite put my finger on it but there's just something about this guy that I think would be refreshing in Calgary. He lives and breathes the game.

So you're shipping out 2/3 of the first line, 3/5 of our top five defensemen, and both of our goaltenders, and you honestly think that the two top UFAs at their positions are going to sign here?
Also, five off season trades? Don't see that happening.

Minnesota reporter Russo said recently he's heard from a lot of sources that the Wild are shopping Dumba.
26, right shot D making $6M for 3 more years.

Gaudreau for Dumba. That would be such a Treliving trade.

Not a fan personally but he'd be a fit. Maybe a Mangiapane/Kylington package? Seems right. A top 4 on the right side with Dumba and Andersson is pretty slick looking. Pepper in Valimaki on the left, Hanifin and Gio, ypu cpuld sign a depth Right shot D man and still re work the FW group.

agree that it has to be an absolute premium. I think Klefbom would be tough though, and he is an LD anyway, and we need RD.
For me it would have to be something like:
RW Yamamoto (ew) + RD Ethan Bear + LD Nurse + this year's 1st

Just curious, why aren't you a fan?
Does he have an major holes in his game?

I think Hanifin for Dumba would be a good trade for both teams.
Minnesota gets the younger player under control longer while cutting 1.05M from their budget.
Calgary gets a RHD defenceman, and while he's older and making more he fills an organizational need and brings a bit more intensity than Hanifin.
Their underlying numbers are pretty equal across the board, so it's Calgary getting the RHD they need and Minnesota getting younger and cheaper with a player who could be around for them to turn their team around.
Giordano - Andersson
Valimaki - Dumba
Mackey - Kylington
It also gives us a local kid to go along with the other local kid we'll be signing (Hall).

Further to this... really not a fan of Yamamoto, but their roster is a wasteland and it's hard to find trade candidates.
What I would prefer would be a C prospect - do they have any?
Bear + Nurse + 1st (this year) + their best C prospect

I could see a trade involving those 2, but Hanifin is younger and cheaper.
Minny has to add.

I've seen some pretty bone headed hockey plays over the years from him. Like 1st year in Calgary Hamonic type stuff. I dont know, it's not a major dislike, just more "meh, whatever" reaction. But I cannot deny he'd be a perfect fit cap wise, term wise and roster wise. Kind of ticks all of my boxes in regards to getting him for the Flames.
Don't think Hanifin is the kind of player to move him for though. But a player for the Flames to get to rotate Andersson with Hanifin and Gio or Valimaki. Thats a very young and strong top 4 either way you slice it.

Retooling the team so lots of moves. I doubt it happens but I could see some combinations of these moves.
I think Hall is very interested in coming here so he is a rare case. When it comes to goalies there could be a lot of movement so I think the Flames will get a great option if they clear the cap space to make room I think they can get an elite goalie.
When the Flames missed the playoffs in 2018 they made a massive blockbuster and spent over $10M on UFA’s.
I think they are looking to make significant change.

You know, that one actually makes some sense. I could get behind that one. Maybe if Minnesota sweetened the pot a bit, seeing as we're taking on more salary.

Still prefer Mangiapne going the other way, namely due to the fact that Hall would be coming in anyways. If tree wants to go all in today, keep joohnny, sign Hall, then sign Toffoli or Fast and rely on the farm for depth. Which we have. And then see if you can snag an RFA center who needs a new home. Thinking Jost or Lias Andersson.
Theres cap space for that type of thing.
