Just my opinion though. I know you mean well though

Because I don't think he'll be worth what he gets as a long term big money UFA contract.

Given the options of trading him for a big asset or couple of assets, re-signing him for a big ticket contract, or letting him walk... I'd prefer a trade. Either this summer, or next.

There was some talk of that when Gallant got fired but Yzerman confirmed that Blashill was returning for next season. So unless Yzerman has a change of heart Gallant would have to wait at least a year. I feel like if Yzerman wanted Gallant or if Gallant was interested it would’ve happened already.

Gallant most likely wants to coach a contender.

I would have no confidence in him. He’d probably fail with this group.

Flames need a guy who has a track record of getting their teams to play above expectation. Babcock hasn’t done that in 10 years.

Fair enough. I think he is worth re-signing, I think finding a player of that skill is very hard but I see your point.

I think the suicide booth gif is comical enough not to be taken seriously. As someone who has battled depression I can differentiate between using it in the context it is used here versus if someone was seriously contemplating killing themselves over a serious issue. I definitely take mental health seriously and if someone truly takes putting a cartoon gif the wrong way I apologize.

SJ is going to be awful sooner or later, but I won't be the least bit surprised if it's later. Will this extended layoff help Karlsson get back to himself?

This current core has been a big disappointment to me. And I believe that spite is a perfectly reasonable reason to do something. So seeing them suffer under Babcock has a certain appeal.
But even I’m not cynical enough to want to watch that disaster unfold.

I would support running another season with Gaudreau and possibly bringing in Hall to go "all in". But that means you probably have to trade him next summer to one of his 5 acceptable teams.
His no trade kicks in July first of next year as I believe.

I run him hard this year, hopefully on a line with Hall and bring up his trade value.

Trade him at the next deadline or next draft. Two years to one year on a contract is not worth what he is worth to use in another year to be able to bing up his value.

If he is the same as he was last year he’s still worth the same at the trade deadline.

If he purs up another ppg season which I can see from him he only increases his value over the extra year trading him now.

The thing about San Jose is that all of their big ticket players are locked up until they are all 40 years old.

Laviolette or Gallant for me. I'd be happy with either.

I've never really like Boudreau, the angry tomato.

Say the Oilers are willing to put up, hands down, the best package for Johnny. What would that have to look like for it to be acceptable for you?

The comparables used in that article do not apply to us.

Both Chicago and Boston won cups. Yes, Panarin was a key piece on Chicago but seguin was a secondary piece on a deep bruins team. Johnny is considered a primary piece on a team that hasn’t won squat.

Agree it will be hard to win a trade involving Gaudreau short term, which is the way I think we will go if it happens. If we take treliving at face value, he doesn’t want to make the team worse. Problem with that is you may have to take one step back to go Two steps forward. Mandate Appears to make Playoffs every year and see what happens. We don’t have the depth to compete with the elite teams, partially due to bad luck (high pick in below average 2014 draft, aborted Zucker/Kadri deals) and bad decisions (trades for goalies/lazar/hamonic) which have stripped our prospect cupboard bare.

So run with what we got and hope that core improves with some free agent Additions (outside of Johnny and mony we don’t have any Trade bait, especially after brodie and hamonic are walking for nothing). If we take treliving at his word, doesn’t appear to be big changes on horizon which is very disappointing given the track record of this team.

McDavid or Draisaitl. They have nothing else in the realm of value.

They have some pieces I don’t mind to be honest. Would have to be an overpayment but to me the starting point would have to be at least something like:

Bouchard / Broberg
Puljujarvi
Lavoie
2020 1st (14th overall)
2021 1st

I'd say two years of Johnny at 6.75 is worth two good assets,

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (6.0) + 2020 1st round pick (EDM)

God that was an ugly read. That guy needs to put his thesaurus away and get to the ####ing point. Somewhere in that mess of imagery and metaphor was an a few ideas on keeping Gaudreau. But our Oscar Wilde wannabe missed in his overwritten testament to the most precarious and possibly pernicious position the pucksters from Calgary find themselves (see , its contagious) is the team is in need of significant change and the premise of trading Gaudreau is built on the signing of Hall and then filling gaps.

Frankly, the only reason you move Gaudreau is if you have signed Hall as a lateral move, allowing you to trade Gaudreau for those pieces that help the team round out the lineup. If you don't get Hall, the you look to other means to support the top six by signing a free agent that fills the gaps. If Hall isn't on the books, then they should be trying to grab Tofolli as a proven scoring RW. A reclamation project worth investigating would be Nichushkin, as the big body with some skill would be a benefit, even if he slotted lower in the lineup. The best option may be both.

Even if Hall isn't in the mix, and the Flames are looking to make a shakeup move where Gaudreau is shipped out of town, there are options in free agency that could soften the blow. While Hoffman and Dadonov are not as sexy as Johnny Hockey, they may be able to provide the same bang for the buck on the scoresheet in games where the play gets more physical. The most important thing about a Gaudreau trade is changing the makeup of the team and making it one that can win in tough games. This is a team that needs a couple more bodies, and those are not coming from within. The system is tapped out and change needs to come from outside.

I'm all for keeping Gaudreau, but that would meaning adding a Tofolli and a Barrie or Vatanen to the lineup to fill holes, but with an albatross contract eating up a big chunk of cash, that likely isn't possible. The most likely way the Flames can make the changes needed is by dealing away a player who has value and is replaceable in the market. Like it or not, that guy is Johnny Hockey, and you have Lucic's contract to thank for that. Treliving's hands are tied here IMO. As big a Gaudreau fan as I am, he has to be moved this summer for the Flames to take a step forward.
