We may as well blow it up completely if we trade away Johnny for futures.
Couturier is a #1C who is a consistent Selke nominee, 27, and signed for 2 more seasons at 4.33M. The Flames also happen to be extremely weak with high end talent at the center position.
If Philly is willing to accept Johnny for him, the Flames should absolutely explore that.

If you can trade Johnny for Couturier and still sign Hall, you might have just opened up a window, TBH.

With my maligned coyotes swap and the proposed couturier 1-1:
Hall-Couturier-Mangiapane
Tkachuk-Monahan-Lindholm
Bennett-Backlund-Dube
Lucic-Gawdin-Reider
OEL-Andersson
Hanifin-Kylington
Valimaki- ?
Kuemper
Talbot
I think that looks pretty interesting.

Interestingly awful. I don't see how a Hall/Cout combo is better than a Johnny/Mony combo. You're better off just shuffling the lines around with the current guys. Also I don't think Valimaki is playing bottom pairing. I just don't see how OEL will be an improvement to Gio other than younger and more money.
I have to politely disagree with that roster and it still looks mediocre.

Hall-Cout doesn't have to better than Johnny-Mony (mony is still on the team.) It just has to perform better in the playoffs, and historically those players have done that.
What it does is increase our centre depth dramatically, with Tkachuk-Monahan-Lindholm good enough to be a #1B line, and Bennett-Backlund-Dube good enough to be a #2 line. 4th line is weak.
You nailed the the biggest improvement that OEL brings over gio: he's not aging out of the league and on a very clear downwards trajectory. You also didn't mention how vastly improved our goaltending would be. Kuemper is the real steal of the gio trade.

OEL may not be as old as Gio but he has been on a bit of a downward trajectory. Injuries have really hurt his game the last couple seasons.
I’m not against moving Gio, but I’d worry about taking on OEL contract.

This morning on 960, Friedman talked about the number of good goalies possibly on the market and said it’s the best market ever. I feel the Flames, whatever they do, must save $ and fix the goaltending this summer.

The goaltending was just fine this season.
There is nothing on the market this off season that would guarantee an improvement.

I don't see Philly trading any real core peices off a team that's just getting better, and is 1 game away from the conference finals. As such, any deal with the flyer is likely for d and/or futures.
If the flames are interested in trading guys like gaudreau and monahan and still remain competitive, the teams they will have to target are not the bottom dwellers who have committed to rebuild, and not the competitive teams that are in cup contention (why would these teams want to change up their cores).
They will have to target the teams in the middle that are sick of losing. Buffalo, new Jersey, Florida. Or, perhaps a middle of the pack team looking to tweak.

I think Philly could be looking for that additional piece that makes them cup contenders for the next 2-3 years. And they are flush enough with young talent that they could afford to trade a guy like Frost, who is blocked somewhat, and may not be viewed as critical to those cup efforts.
You then have to balance cap, but I think there is a fit.
That's where i think something like Ghost+Farabee/Frost+pick/prospect (1st or York) may be a fit.

They can’t re-sign Couturier and Gaudreau in the same offseason without paying significant contract offload fees.
I know it sounds insane, but if they’re involved they’ll be moving Couturier. Or else they just aren’t involved in any Johnny deal. It doesn’t make sense.

Considering the other major flames rumour revolves around another coyotes player who the flames either plan on signing in free agency or trading for his rights (don't remember where that rumour came from), I'd say this rumour has serious legs to it.
I don't think Friedman is tossing a name out there, I think he's providing us with a glimpse into very real conversations currently underway.
Edit: Treliving also loves a blockbuster and his team has basically demanded a substantial change be made after two major playoff blowouts in a row.
The flames also need top 4 D, and perhaps a major minute muncher.
This trade rumour has all the hallmarks of something that's pretty realistic.

Did Friedman suggest the Flames were interested in OEL?

It was more of a speculation than an insider thing.

Couturier misses 1.5 games with an injury and suddenly he's expendable?
Far more likely they move Laughton. 1 yr to UFA and unlikely to re-sign considering the C depth.

It's doable if they let Giroux walk and/or they manage to lose JVR or Voracek [to SEA in expansion]. Farabee and Frost are due that year, too, so something will have to give, but PHI actually isn't in bad shape cap wise IMO.

It wasn’t good enough. This team hasn’t had top-10 goaltending since Kipper, and you aren’t winning a Cup without top-10 goaltending. Top-10 goaltending doesn’t fall apart in an elimination game the way Talbot and Rittich did.
If the team doesn’t improve the goaltending, you know they aren’t winning anything of consequence. We need to raise our expectations.

You can say that all you want but I just remember there was a final with Antti Niemi and Michael Leighton in net.

One time in recent years, and twice in recent history.
Niemi and Binnington are the only two exceptions to having established high end goaltending, and both played lights out in front of very good teams.
I’d sooner aim to be part of the norm, rather that bargain bin shopping the trash that we have had for the better part of a decade.
But yeah, sure, I’ll take few years of prime Toews, Kane, Byfuglien, Seabrook, Keith, and Hossa.
...except we have literally no one at any of their levels either.

There is not one single goalie they can realistically acquire this off season where you can guarantee they'll get any better goaltending than they did.
Goalies are voodoo.
They could pay Lehner his massive UFA payday (if he even makes it to free agency), weaken their team in other areas because of the massive cap hit he will have, and then get 0.910 goaltending.
