Yeah Canucks will probably screw it up.
There were already rumors of trading Boeser to create space to sign Toffoli.
They already have some bad contracts that are going to hurt them:
Ferland: 3 x $3.5
Roussel: 2 x $3.0
Beagle: 2 x $3.0
Eriksson: 2 x $6.0
Myers: 4 x $6.0
Luongo (Re-capture): 2 x $3.0
And the big thing is none of those contracts/penalties expire before needing to re-sign all of Pettersen, Hughes, Demko after next season.
They probably have one of the best young cores in the league right now, but they are already a cap team with Pettersen and Hughes on ELCs. And that's going to hurt them.

And Markstrom, I know Demko two good games but make him the starter facing 40 shots a night? Risky

In terms of strictly this season, thats true.
Most would look at those adds and think "that's not wise" considering they didn't look anywhere near ready to compete.
Most would expect it to blow up in their faces considering they looked to and quite feasibly could have missed the playoffs without the covid stoppage.
And yet here we are, and they're riding the goalie tandem's rainbow farts to rd 2 game 7.
Hockey is strange. Sometimes you're not sure if there's a method to the madness, that maybe it's just madness.
Maybe the Flames should actively make moves to get worse which will somehow lead to better results than they've had.

And it looked like Mackinnon would be one of those too; he had seasons of 38, 52 and 53 points before breaking out at 23. That's why he was on such a cheap contract.
To suggest that we knew when he was drafted that he'd get to a point of "borderline best player in the NHL" is 20 20 hindsight.

The Flames were rumored to be turned down on offering all three of their first round picks that year for Mackinnon. Pretty doubtful a team does that for just a "good" player.

Should've done Monahan for MacKinnon when it made sense (when Sean was the top scorer from that draft and Nathan was in his down years).

Can the Canuck goalies steal nine more games? I doubt it. One is already injured and the other needs an IV after 2 games. A fluke run and no cup probably makes them do more stupid things for the long term.

Hate the Canucks but hope they knock out Vegas. Every other expansion team in all sports have had to endure years of pain and these guys have been handed a Stanley Cup contender on a platter. Their fans are starting to get arrogant as well.
For tonight Go Canucks then you can get run over by the Avs.

I wish people would stop saying this. VGK wasn't "handed" or "gifyed" tbeir roster. They PAID over a half-billion dollars for a more favorable expansion draft structure than previous teams, and they did shockingly well with it. No one saw this coming—least of all the NHL.

The only one that hurts here is the Luongo re-capture.
Ferland is done. He's going to Robidas Island. If this team lets him try and come back again, someone needs to be fired.
Roussell is fine. Beagle is over-paid. The truth is though, that I don't think we are where we are with out either of these guys. They are what separates us from the Buffalos, Floridas and Edmontons of the world.
Eriksson is likely playing his last games as a Canuck. Up until now, his cap hit has been an albatross, but it hasn't stopped the Canucks from doing anything. It's going to sting, and he's going to cost us assets. He is still a smart player, he still brings defensive ability. He's an offensive black-hole, but there it is.
Myers is... I don't hate him? That Minnesota series really warmed me up to him. Yeah he took penalties, but I can't remember a Canuck D-man making it as uncomfortable for the other team's top players as Myers did. Fiala fell off after Myers tried to murder him in the crease.
Anyways, there is no chance the Canucks move Boeser. They'll either find a way to sign Toffoli at the expense of Tanev and Stecher, or keep Tanev and Stecher. Also, don't be shocked if players like Makar, Hughes and Pettersson et al take bridge deals during the flat cap.
It's all moot though, because the team has to come back and do this again next year to make it real. Edmonton was here before and we know where they are now.

I can't help it. I'm super bitter about watching a team come into the league and automatically become a top 5 team. Especially when I've been watching my team trip over their own feet for 30 years. I don't care what they paid, it's not right. And to top it all off they don't even have to lose an asset when Seattle comes calling??
It makes it 10x worse that they're in our division too. All the California teams finally take a nose dive at the same time, oh but wait , there is Vegas just in time to take over for Anaheim and San Jose as the perennial division winners.

The Canucks traded a protected first for a 26 year old player who led the team in scoring and is under team control for five years. It's a win now or win later trade. That's what made it great.

Yeah, I can live with that as long as Colorado sweeps in embarrassing fashion. Vegas Golden Showers can pound sand.

Everyone who thinks Vegas was handed or gifted a contender needs to go back to the GDT for the expansion draft and see what everyone thought at the time. The people that were highest on Vegas' selections basically said "bad in the short term, but a good prospect pool so they'll be good eventually."
And many more people said they were going to be total crap. I hate Vegas, Vegas sucks, I wish both the Canucks and Vegas could lose at the same time, but Vegas being contenders really really annoys me most. That said, the nonsense that they were "handed" anything has to stop, eventually, right? They built a good team despite nobody thinking it was. The protection trades and subsequent selections that nearly everyone mocked pretty much all turned out fantastic.
Even as their first season went on, everyone was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Everyone was counting them out. Everyone was waiting for the magic to run dry. It's taken multiple years for some people to just accept that Vegas is a good team, so I think it's revisionist to say they were handed one from the get-go.

Yeah the fact they bought their way to being competitive makes it no less irritating.

And I have no problem with this response. I just wish people wouldn't make exaggerations or revise the facts to suit their own narrative and placate their wounded feelings. By all means, hate Vegas. Hate them for paying a premium for the chance to build a winner. But don't let that hate cloud your assessment (not you specifically; the generalized plural "you") about what happened for VGK to become the team that they are.

Houston Texans of the NFL paid $700 million expansion fee in 2002. They were not "handed" or "gifyed" any favorable draft structure. They struggled for nearly a decade before finally having a winning season.
If your excuse is they paid half a billion to join so give them a contender on a platter, it's not a very good one.
It did help Vegas since NHL GMs for the most part aren't very smart so they they doubled up on the draft rules and gave them additional assets and picks on top of the favorable structure.
To each their own. Go Canucks for tonight.

Hilarious that you would compare the NHL to the largest, wealthiest most successful sports league of all time. The NFL is on an entirely different playing field on which they can do things no other league can do.

Again, no one gave them anything. It is not the League's fault that so many teams so badly botched the expansion draft to show VGK to take advantage.

That was in 2002, $700 million. The $500 million Vegas paid in 2017 is peanuts to what the NFL number would be in 2017 and yet they won't be bending the expansion rules as much as the NHL
The league literally started of by saying you can only protect half your team. They had to expose more than half their team. They were able to pick some good players and then NHL GMs decided in order to protect some of these exposed players they had to pay a ransom.
Do you understand it yet or no? Again, half team exposed due to rules, in order to protect some of those good player some GMs paid them more assets. So they won in all cases, get some decent players from teams unwilling to pay the ransom plus get assets on top of still useful players from teams willing to pay the ransom.
