I still don't understand how teams are going to meet their payrolls with no gate revenue next season.

What about a mega deal that sets us up for the future, allows us to compete now, and completely changes the core group:
Nico Hischier + 7th overall (Holtz/Perfetti) + Miles Wood + Nikita Gusev
for
Monahan + Gaudreau
We offset the production of Gaudreau with Hall and Hischier would be Monahan's replacement. Woods is the perfect player for this team. Young, physical, and very fast! He's put up decent numbers and would thrive in the West. Not to mention adding a legit blue chip prospect.
This trade makes us younger, potentially (I think likely) more skilled, and extends a window for a new core: Tkachuk, Lindholm, Andersson, Mangi, Dube, Valimaki, Hischier, Hall, 7th overall.

That is right in line with Gio (1.93) and only ranked 123rd out of 215 defensemen that played 400+ minutes this year.
In the last 3 years combined, OEL ranked 162nd out of 256 defensemen that played 800+ minutes during that span at 1.87/60.
So he's not even close to being in the top half of worst defenseman on a giveaway/60 rate, let alone being a giveaway machine, whereas someone like Brodie (who Flames fans hated the last couple years prior to this year for his giveaways) ranks 37th in the same time period at 2.82/60.
|
Honestly, a fascinating post. If I had to explain it away, against OEL, I might submit that his giveaways were much more egregious, and happened more in the defensive zone. No proof, just a guess based on watching him play...

How much will cost Malkin? I would trade Monahan + for him. We have some russians that may play next year for us, so he may accept to come here.

I wouldn't trade Monahan's contract for what, one season of Malkin?

A lot of fans would crap on Iginla as well, means nothing. If the GM is reading CP he should be the first one let go. Monahan is not enough, you need more high end players.

Geno is 34, and although he's still going strong, how much longer can he stay productive?

Would Love to have Malkin on the roster, but 9.5 a year for 2 more seasons I believe.
Monahan for him is a bad trade because you lose Monahan and whoever you cant protect in expansion and you pay Malkin 3+m more and then lose him for nothing.

Boedker was 4M AAV front loaded; Hoffman 5.187 AAV backloaded. The Sens saved about $4.3M real money over 2 years
Which is the kind of thing FLA will be looking to do (rather than unload Barkov or Ekblad). Matheson is backloaded with 32M to pay over the next 6 years. I think their move is to move him for a front-loaded contract like Ladd, Alzner, Eriksson, Parise, Okposo, etc. Hard to say who sweetens by how much in each case.
I could see Matheson for Eriksson and Baertschi/Beagle/Roussel/Ferland (VAN has signed a lot of front loaded deals) making some sense for both sides. FLA still needs roster players, VAN's LD looks thin as Edler only has 1 year left.

Days after Gio's Norris win, I suggested trading him for Malkin 1:1.
Funny, seeing this now.

Malkin can't stay healthy and if Monahan goes the other way the team is just spinning its wheels.

They aren’t. We don’t get to see another season until spring/summer 2021. (Prediction).

Doesnt Tre usually have something to say after the season ends?? I've been waiting for some kind of comment from him regarding the humiliating collapse, but he's been MIA.
I like to think he's as outraged as the rest of us and doesnt trust himself to speak to the media... but it seems weird there's been such radio silence

I believe he and others are addressing the media later on today.

Yes, pundits are saying the big names are going to get paid, but the mid-tier UFAs (those expected to make 3-5 mil) are going to get lowballed because of the flat cap and revenue crisis.

My guess is I will be a basic speech saying there would good and bad things. He will also say that he is now going to do an internal review of everything. It will just be lip service because I believe he has already done an internal review with all the time off for covid and being in the bubble. He knows his next steps, but won’t be sharing that with the public.

This is where I have a problem with the spreadsheet trackers. They think that what is listed on a spreadsheet is the reality of the game, not understanding the complexity or chaos of the game that is trying to be measured. Try watching the guy play in real games, you know, like professional scouts do. OEL is a mediocre defenseman. He generates offense, but often it is for the other team as well. He makes really poor decisions and puts his team mates in positions where they have nothing to do with puck. Its a turnover (giveaway) and leads to offense for the opposition. The giveaway may not be charged to OEL, kind of like that poor guy who takes the minus because he just got on the ice for a goal scored against, but his stupid play caused the giveaway. OEL is a love-him-hate-him player. If you find TJ Brodie to be frustrating OEL will send you to the looney bin. Ask Coyotes fans, if you can find one on a board, and they will tell you OEL can't be trusted in his own end. Not worth the investment of salary.

I doubt this would happen (and sorry if already discussed) but what about Johnny for Marner?
They are similar players and although the Leafs lose out on the age difference, they make up for it with the extra cap space....Marner could play with Tkachuk again.
