I don't know where else to put this, but it seems fitting for this thread about all the talk when it comes to the heart and direction of the Flames.
This shows you how to do a rebuild properly, and I'm sorry I had to use the Canucks as the example, but that's how you build a team. If this mediocrity continues for the next 3 years we will start to see teams like the Canucks leap past the Flames. Hell Vancouver even made it to the 2nd round when the Flames couldn't!
For some reason this team just seems broken in the chemistry right now. It doesn't even matter if you bring in good or new guys every year, you have to address the root of your core and fix that first.
It's infuriating to watch as a fan of the team. Time to start moving on from guys that don't get it.
I have no idea what salaries some of the players will make next year but here's a rough guess. I'm open to your suggestions. If my math is correct, we'd have about 1,000,000 in Cap space to play with. I have not factored in what we could get for Gaudreau & Giordano: prospects, draft picks or trades.

I honestly wouldn't say chemistry is an issue with the team. The reason Flames always get eliminated early in the playoffs is due to one or both of these issues: top line doesn't perform, or goaltending is inadequate.
If Flames top players actually were close to the same level of Stars top players, Flames likely would still be in playoffs right now. Flames depth were doing what you could expect from them generally.

If you equate what players get paid=best, then not really.
Monahan and Gaudreau had 6 points as Seguin and Benn had 7 in the 6 games. Benn and Seguin make a combined $19.3M, a full $6M more than JG and SM.

Why would Kylington Quinne Lomberg be making more than the league minimum?
Does no one else want Hall? Why would anyone take on Gaudreau at 6.75 when for 25K a year more they could have Hall?
Philly might want Johnny Hockey but they would want to send JVR and his 7M deal back.
same with Gio... 6.75 for 2 years and some draft picks/prospects going to Calgary or Pietrangelo for 8 x 5 ... Pietrangelo would be younger than Gio is now in year 5 of the deal.
Yeah Lomberg and Quine ain't getting $1.2 million. I could see them both getting blended contracts where the AAV is $750k with a $200k salary at the AHL level with a guarateed minimum total salary of $300k.

The 'Old' Core... Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, Giordano and Brodie. A lot of good years and solid entertainment. But, I have trouble thinking that going forward with any of them moves the team forward. I'll put them in order of who I think should go, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings as much as I thought it would if they were to all go.

So like I said, "I have no idea what salaries some of the players will make next year but here's a rough guess. I'm open to your suggestions."
I don't need your criticism, suggested salaries will do.
Bennett was a toss up for me. Before this playoff run I think most fans were ready to move on and several fans thought he was worth very little. For 3 weeks in August he was a force and was once again the only player over the last 2 playoffs the Flames could count on. I lean closer to him being in the core than the expendable list.
