Wasn't Baxter, he had retired.

Patrick Marleau was stripped of his C, which was given to Rob Blake, which he had for season before retiring. They gave to to Thornton had it removed in to make Pavelski captain.

Dustin Brown wore the C for eight years, winning two cups before it was stripped off his jersey and put on Kopitar's.

None of this was embarrassing.

Backlund is captain material but I don't see him as an untouchable or here long term. The obvious answer to me is Andersson but not while Giordano is a member of the team. I don't see the point in Gio giving up the C. Just wait until he's traded, UFA or retired.

I frankly don't think who wears the C ranks in the top 10 of issues facing this team.

It’s Gio’s until he leaves or retires or there is a natural progression, and, it is not forced upon him, and, then it’s his choice, just like Conroy with Iginla.

That natural progression is not there on this roster yet, with Tkachuk or anyone else, though maybe Lucic would have the seniority angle.

In 2 years, when Gio's contract ends, and Tkachuk signs a long extension.

But definitely not now.

Hunter is correct.

McDonald’s return to the lineup meant that both assistant captains, Tim Hunter and Jim Peplinski, sat out game #6. So when the Flames won the Stanley Cup and NHL Commissioner John Ziegler presented it to Lanny, he did not lift it over his head in celebration until he called Hunter and Peplinski to come and stand beside him at the presentation table, and the three of them lifted Lord Stanley’s trophy together.

I forgot about that, was thinking more recently, and had in my mind a few teams that went with just A’s, not so much split C’s.

Seems like there are a few other examples Scorp brought up, but those teams haven’t been particularly good teams.

The cup era Flames were the only example that popped up of a good team, and they were stacked

Either way, I kind of don’t like the idea in general for this incarnation of the team, Still think it’s a weird thing, a sign of lack of direction in an underperforming team

Actually it is. LA has been in disarray since. And don’t underestimate how those moves may have kept SJ from winning. Definitely they are underperformers.

I agree.

Personally, I think deciding the captains should be something that happens during or just after training camp each season. I don't understand why it is the default that the captain last year is automatically the captain the next season.

Gio just made Calgary his permanent home last Summer, I think these type of things, sense of community and love for the City, matter to the Flames owners.

I'd be surprised if they allowed management to dump Gio.

Players don't have to be the captain to be a leader. If Tkachuk wants to lead - lead.

I do not agree with this. Captain's should lead by example and he sure didn't this playoff.

Gio has earned the C until he decides to pass it on or is no longer a Flame. Tkachuk can still be a leader with an A.

I am not so sure that MT will re-sign in Calgary.

But, if he is going to, he should be the Captain.

Giordano should offer it to him as Conroy did for Iggy.

Wholeheartedly agree.

Team fell off after he went down. Having a captain who is a motivator and communicates on the bench is something this particular team needs.

Gio led with his play for a few years but now he isnt doing that, so unless he can start leading in another way it may be time to pass that mantle on to someone more willing to rally the guys when needed.

I would not strip Gio of the C right now. Let him continue be the captain next year but leave him exposed to the expansion draft. If he got picked, then promote Tkachuk to be the new permanent captain. If Gio stays, then wait another year...
