If this team gets blown up and rebuilt i find it hard to believe a guy that became captain in his 30’s should remain captain through a second rebuild.
This team is likely moving on from Brodie, Gaudreau and Monahan 3 key pieces of the most recent core. Maybe it is time for a new leader. If not Tkachuk then who?

Yeah next year is a big year for Tkachuk and his Flames future. Sure, brings a lot of character and intangibles and attention on himself (for better or worse) it didn't have a great 2nd half of the season last year, nor playoffs. This year's, just a few points in his 6 games.
He needs to develop chemistry with some linemates to get better 5 on 5 scoring. Who knows how that goes this summer as players shift.
If he steps up his game next year and takes it to the next level offensively for sure. If he doesn't, and or starts to get grumpy if the Flames don't progress next year, past the first round the clock will be ticking in his head on his future here too.

I don't care who it is, but Tkachuk is not ready. Don't pull an OIler and give a guy the responsibility and weight of the captaincy before he has shown he's ready. Tkachuk is still a punk who doesn't understand the gravity of his actions. He's getting there, but he's not there yet.

I don't see the rush, and we have no clue who the leaders are in the locker room really.
I need some more time to process, but right now I'm ready to move Monahan and Giordano this off season. Give GIo a chance at a championship and get some picks and new leadership here.

I would fully support making Giordano and Tkachuk co-captains. Give Tkachuk the C at home and Giordano the C on the road.

I think Chucky should get it, but could listen to an argument for Backlund too

I have seen the 2 A’s distributed across 3 guys, but never seen a split C
This organization is not good enough to go off the board and do weird things. That’s how you become a laughingstock

I'm not as deeply in love with Tkachuk as most fans and here is why:
As yet not a playoff performer. Still early in his career, small sample size, but he just hasn't shown another gear.
Multiple concussions. I worry about him long-term. He had the bad back of the head to the ice after getting submarined a few seasons ago, Zadorov smashed him last years playoffs and now the head to head with Oleksiak. Not good at all. He could be damaged goods.
Contract status. Been mentioned above. Valid concern.
Is he captain material? Alternate, yes for sure, but I don't see him as a captain at this time. Too reckless, impetuous, and not respected enough throughout the league.
Personally I see Backlund as the logical choice to succeed Gio. He is home grown, heart and soul Flame, plays the right way, and often is our best most consistent player..
As for Tkachuk, I do wonder if there isn't a trade option there for the Flames. Depends, but I'd do Tkachuk to Ottawa for #3 overall. There's your shot at a 1C, right there.

Or just blow a 3 goal lead in Game 6 of the playoffs if doing weird things is too much hassle.

True. In spectacular a definitive fashion
It must sting for the team to be in Leafs territory

Bob Boughner and Craig Conroy did it for the Flames beginning in 2002 through the end of the 2002/2003 season.

This isn’t the NBA. One player can’t do everything himself. Yeah, he only got 2 points in 6 games playing with Backlund and Mangiapane on the second line.
He’s quite often the only one who seems like he understands how a team works. I say “seems” because I don’t personally know any of the players, nor do I have any access to their locker room.
I would follow the guy straight through a brick wall if I was on his team, that’s all I’m saying.

This team shouldn't have a captain. Gio is highly overrated. Don't strip him if it but his time in the NHL is quickly coming to an end. Rotate A's until one emerged. Tkachuk has a lot of maturing to do

During their Stanley Cup year they didn't have a designated captain. It was split between Pep, Lanny and one other (Hunter? no that doesn't seem right)

It's hardly unique. Carolina did it with Staal and Faulk. Buffalo did it with Vanek and Ott. Minnesota did it with like five guys at once.
Heck the Flames did it when they won the Cup. Lanny, Peplinski, and Tim Hunter.

Is there anyone on the Flames you don't have some weird hate-on for?
Tkachuk is one of the smartest guys in hockey having grown up in the NHL scene. He knows exactly what he's doing.
What a joke of a post

Pepper, Lanny and Hunter.
(Or was it Baxter? Patterson? I was sure it was Hunter until I wrote it out...)

Wasn't Baxter, he had retired.
