While I agree with you, this team isn't rebuilding, so there's more point in talking hockey trades right now than "Player for beans!" trades.
Especially when half of the trades are for draft picks that aren't likely to be even as good as the players they're being traded for.

I'm surprised we haven't heard from Tree yet. Hes usually pretty quick to jump on air and take the brunt.
Maybe tomorrow when they get back to cgy.

Still, Monahan is a top second line centre, if you trade him you still need to replace that part.
So the answer is to add more high level pieces not swap one for another. The Flames really have wait for a second group of draftees to pan out. Teams like Colorado and Dallas had to dip many times before they built their current lineups.
You need multiple generations of good players. Also stay out of the free agent game until your ready to go for a cup. An example is the Matt Duchene deal, Colorado still kept Landeskog and the other key pieces. They also dropped Barry, who was part of the core.

The players haven’t been that good so there is a solid chance the draft picks at least give us something to look forward to. Ain’t no one being fooled by this team anymore. The Flames are gonna be hit hard by no ticket sales/fan anger. Best route for them is to rebuild or at least a hard re-tool

I honestly don't see Monahan as a center on a cup contender. The closest parallel I can draw is probably Jeff Carter circa 2012, but people need to recall that on that cup run, he played on the second line wing.
Yes, Carter was 2C on the 2014 Kings, but the league is just that much deeper, tighter, faster, more skilled, more dynamic six years later, and I doubt that particular Kings team could hang with today's top tier.

Honestly, I think we have no shortage of lefthanded shot forwards who are dying for more opportunity. Mangiapane, Dube, Bennett being the three that come to mind.
I'd rather try and move on than keep spinning wheels with the current core.

You're getting #### on because the trade proposal is bad but unfortunately for Flames fans I think if treliving is still here to make these decisions, you're probably a lot closer to how things will go down than we might like to admit.
Treliving loves a 'hockey trade'.
Gaudreau for Matt Murray and Jack Johnson
Gaudreau for D'Angelo and Georgiev
Gaudreau for Mizlerkins, Jenner and a Pick/Murray/Nutivara
Then sign Taylor Hall for 8x7

I agree, but the Flames need a goalie and a reasonably priced dman.

Jack Johnson is finished. Pens fans cannot find enough ways to get him off their roster. Bad doesn't even begin to describe his level of play and he still carries a $3 million + AAV for 3 more years. If Treliving traded Johnny for that package I would have to pack in my fandom haha

Probably some picks sprinkled in, but those are the kind of deals I see the team making.
Patching two holes with one stone.

They certainly aren't getting that with Jack Johnson.

I do like what you're doing though Flash, severely lowering expectations so when the real trades happen it looks like a haul....even though it isn't

No offense but it's more like packing two holes with refuse and hoping they'll hold.
Merzlinkins looks pretty good, as does georgiev, but goalies can look amazing one season in limited play and totally suck balls when given the reins. Murray is a good example. Johnson is way over the hill and a cap dump. D'angelo is interesting, but has a known attitude problem that has kept him bouncing around. Not at all interested in the rest of the columbus deal.
Really those would be akin to the Phaneuf trade in my opinion, which was a disaster for this club. Going into a trade with positions of players needed in mind is not a great idea because you're immediately limiting the value you can acquire with constraints. You take a bunch of potential offers right off the table. It forces you to settle.
Looking at the best trade, IMO, that has been made for a star forward recently, Sakic did not hold out for any specific positions or roster players or anything in the Duchene trade, he just let the offers roll in until he found the best combo to take.

Rebuilding teams aren't go to trade away their #1 centres. They just aren't. Nor are teams serious about contending in the immediate future. So no Eichel, Hischier, Couturier, or Barkov. Even a top C prospect like Cozens is a pipe dream, unless the Sabres go into full hair-on-fire panic mode.
The Flames will either have to draft a new #1 C, or luck out in a trade for a second-tier prospect (Frost, Heponiemi, Boqvist), or a reclamation project (Wennberg, Zacha).

Just to clarify, these are not proposals that I think are worth it or deals I would be looking for, but I think with so many holes the flames will be looking to take back returns built around a goalie and a defender rather than risk having to go into the UFA market for either.
Like trying to get two top of the lineup players in Hanifin and lindholm for one very top of the lineup player in Hamilton.

no way you sign Taylor Hall, that just drags this out. You maybe sign a 25 year old Hall, not a 29 year old. Also, I would not want Murray, if anything you go for Tristan Jarry.
I think you have to make deals like the Hamilton deal , bring players that are younger with more potential.

The phaneuf trade weighs heavily in my mind right now in regards to what direction this team will go in.
Superstar player on a team with a ton of holes and a bad mix of cap libabilities.
The Flames need quantity over quality right now to field a lineup for next year. I think Brodie is going to Toronto, Hamonic to Winnipeg, Gustafsson back to Chicago and Forbort somewhere else, maybe Edmonton or back to LA.
They can't risk filling 4 defensive spots via free agency, there will have to be a trade with a defender coming back, and that defender can't cost the moon either.

A goalie you *hope* to bounce back and a complete anchor of a below-replacement level defenseman that's signed for another 3 years?
That is a genuine, genuine lol moment
