Ans yet look at how good that skill and high talent performed the past week. Bennett was undoubtedly our best player this post season, not even close.
Only guy who threw a hit in the third tonight.
But I agree that the trade for hamonic was awful

Don't forget "assist machine" Lazar, Stone and Gustafson

My favourite part of that move was Treliving signing Stone the day before free agency, triggering the clause that required the Flames send the Coyotes a 5th-round pick.
The Flames just had to get ahead of the 0 other teams interested in signing Michael Stone on July 1st. Blatantly threw a 5th-round pick in the garbage for no reason - on a contract they later bought out.
Again, not a big mistake in isolation but the culmination of assets disposed for stupid #### is eye opening.

The guys drafted 2015 onwards were actually pretty good. .
I’d rather have skill guys who may not be big but actually make the roster like Dube, Mangiapane, Andersson, Kylington, over guys like Hunter Smith or Brandon Hickey who must be good because Big = Good.

Two step process the next day:
(1) Put Giordano, Monahan, Gaudreau and Backlund onto the market. See what the offers are. What you need, youthful, play-driving #1 centre. It could be a guy near the NHL with lots of upside (ex: Nolan Patrick, Dylan Cozens, Nico Hischier), or it could be a proven centre, who is 27 or younger (ex: Sean Couturier). Of course, what you’re getting back means more or less must be in play.
(2) If you can do (1), retool. If not, scorched earth rebuild. The reason for the rebuild is not being strong up the middle. At this point, Tkachuk and Lindholm also become available. The rebuild continues until the Flames have 2 young, play-driving centres (ex: Mackinnon, Eichel, Pettersson, Hischier) and 2 young, dynamic defenceman (ex: Makar, Hughes, Theodore, Chabot). You build up the middle.

A quick scan of articles about teams in the east says you may be wrong. Teams are looking for centers. John is probably more valuable than Sean but I don't think by a large margin. Certainly not for peanuts in return. Granlund is probably the best UFA C available and that isn't good. Columbus comes to mind as needing another C.
Anyway, I'm not saying trade away our top C (unless the rebuild is on) but I do believe the return for Monahan would be substantial.

The sabres really need another C behind Eichel. That would be a dream spot for Monahan. Jersey has lots of C depth but not much on the wings, great spot for Johnny. Lots of teams need a good vet D like Gio. I'm sure a few teams would like to have Backlund as a #2-3 down the middle, rangers come to mind. Get rid of Ward. Get a legit #1 goalie or as close to it as possible; Gorgieve or whatever, Murray, Lehner, there has to be at least one option the Flames can capitalize on

Yeah, that contract was beautiful start to finish.
My favourite part is instead of using a very valuable 2nd round pick to push major deal over the top, using it to grab Lazar .
4th round picks out the window in consecutive years for Forbort and Fantenberg when Oliver Kylington is right there waiting to go while Kulak plays 18:40 a night somewhere else.

Monahan should be able to get Korpisalo/Merzlikins (and something else) in return. Columbus GM isn't afraid to deal.

With the way goalies are, I would be scared these guys would regress. Especially Merzlikins who really had like one good month.

Yeah stay away from goalies that look good in Columbus system.
Ask Florida how Bobrovsky is doing away from that team defensive structure.

I would trade everyone (you can) on the wrong side of 30. Get what you can now, before their value drops.
Everyone says that we need to do a proper rebuild, but then nobody wants to trade away players like Backlund. He is a really good player, he should have value for the future.

Trade for futures. If Treliving tries to keep "the window" open, whatever that would even mean at this point, by trading just Gaudreau and getting something of impact back right now I think it's a big mistakes. Winning a SC isn't in the cards for this team as it is constructed right now. Should be another rebuild.

Should have traded Gaudreau already, his value is just decreasing. I say that trade alone would give the core a shake.
Plus there’s still Valimaki who likely will be top 4 right away.
And a real, legit experienced coach. Laviolette or Gallant perhaps.
Talbot and Rittich are not NHL starters either, so also have to fix that.

Player A (27) - 0.30 gpg / 0.73 ppg - Highs of 30g / 70p - 1.5 years left on contract - requested a trade publicly
Player B (25) - 0.35 gpg / 0.76 ppg - Highs of 34g / 82p - 3 years left on contract - hasn't requested a trade publicly
Which player would be worth more in a trade?

Well Player B for sure (which is Monahan)
Now I’m intrigued who the hell player A is and what package he moved for.

Alright it is speculation time again. Big trades coming for the Flames and until last night I didn’t consider they would actually trade Monahan but after seeing the tweet Scorp posted above and the deflating loss of last night I think the Flames move on from both Monahan and Gaudreau.
Trade 1
To Buff: Monahan+Kylington
To CGY: Cozens+Risto/Montour/Miller (whichever right D they want to get rid of the most)
To NJ: Gaudreau
To CGY: 7th overall, Zacha
Ideally the team would find a way to move Ryan and Rittich’s cap hits with minimal money coming back.
They could still look to chase Hall, and Lehner in free agency.

Player A is Duchene when he was traded from Colorado to Ottawa for a HAUL.
Treliving better not sell low on Monahan.
