it's going to be interesting when, in the wake of this appalling period, the flames' only trade this summer is oliver kylington for a third-round pick

This post aged well.
They would literally be better off walking away from Murray, rather than taking Rittich's contract back for him.

I don't even know how they fix this team... there just so many holes...
We don't have a foreseeable #1 goalie, don't have a #1 center and doesn't look like we have one coming anytime soon, don't have a #1 defenceman (at least not yet, maybe one of our young guys turns into one, there is potential), team is badly missing some RWers, no one on the Flames you could call a "shooter" or "goalscorer" I thought Monahan was that but he just isn't and neither is Lindholm.
Maybe if you retool you can acquire a couple of these things but the #1 center which is the most important thing is likely only going to be found in the draft, so either the Flames have to get lucky a get a Getzlaf in the 15-20 range, trade up this draft and get Byfield somehow (assuming the Flames figure he is #1 material), or trade for one on another team - but which team is going to just trade away their or a potential #1 center. Even if they managed to draft one this year, it will be a couple years before they can be a #1 in the NHL... I don't know, the rebuild at this point is a failure and I'd rather them just restart instead of wasting more years barely making the playoffs and getting outmatched and outworked in the first round.

The only way - the ONLY way - to fix this team is to tear the whole damn thing down, suck for a while, and start over. Draft yourself a Petterson or a Mackinnon, draft yourself a Heiskanen or a Makar. Find an honest to god franchise C and franchise D and go from there. It can be done, it just takes some patience.
But it's the Flames, so of course they'll try and look for shortcuts everywhere.

Meh I'm down for selling everyone. I said I wasn't earkier but after this disaster #### it. Sell our entire top 6 except tkachuk to the highest bidder, gio too, don't resign anyone and start from pretty much scratch

The new arena will definitely play a factor as well.
The ownership won't allow a real rebuild heading towards that when they'll want corporate sponsors and high priced season tickets.
A mediocre but "competitive" team will remain the mandate.

This better be Monahans last game as a Flame. We will never go anywhere with him as our #1 C. At least Gaudreau tried, he is unnoticible.

They both can be gone. I'm not even sure Monahan's value, hopefully its decent, but man he has been disappointing. I know its the negative thing to say on this board that Gaudreau is leaving when his deal is up, but lets be honest he is LIKELY leaving, so instead of getting nothing for him when he walks, lets get value out of his contract that still has some time on it and get a hockey deal made. He's likely going to produce on whatever team he goes to because I think he will flourish playing with guys that other defenders will be forced to defend instead of only him, but its better than holding on for nothing, and the Flames aren't going to be able to get him someone to play with where he will be able to work his magic again before his deal runs out.

Maybe trade Ryan and Rittich for what picks you can get and then:
Sign Hall, Barrie, and Talbot. Fill out the roster with affordable deals where you can.
Hall - Monahan - Dube
Gaudreau - Bennett - Lindholm
Mangiapane - Backlund - Tkachuk
Lucic - UFA/promotion - UFA/promotion
UFA/promotion
Hanifin - Andersson
Giordano - Barrie
Valimaki - Kylington
UFA/promotion
Talbot
UFA/promotion
It actually works from a cap-perspective. It means you're exposing Backlund and Mangiapane in all likelihood (unless Bennett bombs), and likely exposing Giordano.
|
^^^Don't do any of this !@#$
Burn this mother !@#$er down.
Bennett, Tkachuk, Andersson, and Dube are the core.
Everyone else can piss off.

Where he will turn into a reliable 2nd pairing defenseman that can skate like the wind...

Yup. This is the tough part. Everyone knows the Flames want to make changes. Everyone is going to try to “help” them out. The Flames are trading from a very low point.

I am thinking there will be big changes this off season to the roster.
I'm way more worried than I am excited.
Better keep the expectations low.

Yup, I think the franchise needs to make significant moves and we've heard from insiders rumblings that the management viewed this year as the last chance for the core.
But what are the chances we pull that off properly vs cripple our franchise further?
Prepare to trade Gaudreau/Monahan/whoever for draft picks that never pan out for the team, setting us back further.
It seems like the team needs to rebuild, but honestly... what are the odds we do that successfully?

Kind of telling we've never had a top 3 pick and stay mediocre. Not saying tank but we need a break.
