Sam Bennett missed almost his entire Draft+1 year due to injury, then got dropped into the playoffs and performed well. Then he spent 1 year with Backlund then got dealt Brouwer, Chiasson, Versteeg, Jagr, Jankowski and lovely James Neal. He was also kicked all over the line-up. No Jr. development after his draft, no AHL development time, and then fed to the wolves after 1 good NHL season.
Yes, Bennett could have handled the discipline issues better. I wish he would have, but the card the Flames dealt his development was that of a mickey mouse organization. Thankfully Tree seems to have largely resolved that development process by forcing players through a patient development process.

Bennett performed as well as expected after his shoulder surgery. He practiced with the Flames and went back to Kingston and picked up where he left off, he was dominant. Joined the Flames and played well as you could reasonably expect from an 18 year old in the 2015 playoffs. Next year he played well with Backlund and Frolik, although I would argue the 4 goal game was an outlier and unlikely to happen again much like Jankowski’s 4 goal game. Still, 36 points was an entirely respectable number to put up.
I suppose you could argue Sam got the raw end of the deal the following year when Tkachuk ultimately took his spot next to Backlund and Frolik, but also hard to argue against that decision. Tkachuk Backlund Frolik was one of the better lines in the league for two straight years and the Backlund Tkachuk combo has been their best play driving line since. Who was Sam going to replace? Johnny? No. Tkachuk? No. Monahan? No. Backlund? No. Lindholm? No. Frolik? I would say no. Sam wasn’t reliable enough. He couldn’t take Michael Frolik’s spot. And when the time came, Mangiapane did. It wasn’t because the Flames didn’t want Sam to succeed.
I also disagree that development only occurs in Jr and the AHL. Players can develop in the NHL. Also doubt he was ‘fed to the wolves’. We know the Backlund line played against the top line on other teams, not Bennett’s line. In fact, it would be worth going back and seeing what his zone starts have been, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that they were favourable.

Lebrun mentions the Flames have contacted Talbot about an extension.
I think this is a mistake. There are some key goalies available this summer and signing a guy like Lehner to a 5 year deal should be the priority. Markstrom is also high on the list.

Both are going to be looking for big tickets. Hard to do in a flat cap world and potentially regrettable. Goalies are voodoo, spend you money elsewhere.

For the same price I like Talbot a heck of a lot more that Rittich.
All other things being equal though, the Flames probably don't have the cap space to invest in a top goalie. The forwards are much more of a problem that needs addressing.

Flames can't afford those two. They only have 3 top 4 D signed you can't just leave the forward group as is either.

I’d not mind if flames re-sign Talbot to a contract, and go with a 1A/1B tandem again next year.

Not sure how people think COL would have room for Hall. They have $22M in space, with 9 spots to fill. They need to re-sign (or replace):
Zadorov
Burakovsky
Namestnikov
Nieto
and others. Those 4 alone are taking $12-$15M at a minimum, maybe more. Plus they'll have to re-sign Makar next year.
I don't see where they have $7 - $8M for Hall.

I would rather have Lehner than Hall.
He has been available every year, and yet for some reason the Flames never seem to show any interest. He's 11th all time in save percentage. Ahead of Lundqvist, Price, Rinne, Bobrovsky, Hellebuyck, and Andersen. Rask and Bishop are the only goalies with more games played and higher career save percentages. And Lehner has played over 300 games, many of which were for poor Ottawa, Buffalo, and Chigago teams.
I heard Vegas was trying to re-sign him, but I don't see how it works under their cap.

If he signed a one year deal it would work. But yeah he's probably not going to do that. Maybe though, he just witnessed them #### spank the coyotes out of the playoffs

What are the chances that either Markstrom or Lehner chooses the Flames?
It would have to be the money.

That’s okay. Tre has shown he can do both. He is not a stranger to having three goalies on the team

When it comes to goalies there are only 31 jobs next year so I think it is easier signing a high profile goalie vs a skater.
I could see Rittich being traded to a team looking to make a tandem with the Flames going with an old school approach of a stud starter and a cheaper backup

Depending on what kind of contract he wants, I could see a deal around Rittich+ for Murray. Just not sure what that + would have to be.

He needs a physical center who can create space and chaos on the forecheck. Someone like...I don't know, Bennett?

Matt Murray? Have you seen him at all this season? What is appealing about a .899SV%?
Pens take that deal straight up and laugh all the way to the bank.

No they don't.
Murray is a RFA and only 26. His numbers have dipped the last couple seasons, but he's still a goalie with value. They will probably look at moving him, but not for one season of David frickin Rittich.

Hard to know what's up with Murray without being close to the situation, but the guy had a career 0.917 save % prior to this season, still has a career 0.914 save % despite this season and he also has a 50 career playoff starts, 29 career playoff wins, a career 0.921 playoff save percentage and two Stanley Cups.
If you think there is any chance he will bounce back you should definitely buy low on the guy (if possible) and sign him long term, as he's still just 26 and younger than Rittich.

Matt Murray is a flash in the pan and that flash happened almost three years ago. The Pens know they have a sieve. Visit a Pens board sometime to see the pitchforks out for Murray.
