I saw one tweet earlier bitching about how they should have gotten a bye, and how the league continues to screw them.

I just caught McDavid saying “we didn’t take them lightly”
Seriously? Your team has been the biggest underperformers in the last...forever.
You won some games this year. Good for you. You are the underdogs here. Keep the arrogant attitude and you will be out in a few days.

They havent. This is the Play-in.
The Oilers were in a tailspin so out of control film-makers abandoned the idea of using it in Top Gun 3.
The Oilers likely 'shouldnt have qualified for the playoffs' either.
And again, this is a pretty bad Hawks team that pulled the chute on their season at the trade deadline and they beat the Oilers senseless with one hand tied behind their backs.
That was pretty gruesome.

Locke...I see brackets, and a "best of X series", and even if you call it a "Play In", it looks like a playoff format to me.

One of the announcers noted that all stats count as playoff stats...
Didn't this kubalik kid set a new playoff record yesterday.
Definitely playoff's imo...

Since 1980, only 7 of 49 teams have lost the first game of a best of 5 and ended up winning in the NHL playoffs.
Yet I recall someone suggesting that the first game wasn’t all that important.

My best friend is an Oilers fan (Gross, I know), and he excused the loss yesterday as unfair because "the Hawks are at peak rest and have way more experience. In a normal season, these old ####s (Kane, Toews, Keith) would be tired and broken".
As if the entire league didn't have 4 months off to rest and recover.

What makes this Chicago win so much better is how before the game the media was so pro Oiler. Stewart saying the Oilers are going to win the cup, Ron being Ron, Principe noting the Oilers are undefeated in afternoon games, etc. Pumping tires left and right. They really are bending over backwards to anoint and praise them when they have accomplished zilch.

They have the shortest bench in the league, I can’t understand the hype at all.
Two players... shut them down and avoid killing penalties and it’s over. They are completely out classed here. This is a huge deal to the Oiler team, and a walk in the park for the Hawks.

In fairness, there was a lot less parity back then, and a massive gap in talent between the strong and weak teams. Many of those first-round best-of-5s were total blow-outs.
Having said that, game one in a 5 game series is huge. No denying that.
Also, the Oilers suck.

And they didn't even shut them down. The Oilers PP was really effective, going 3 for 4. And the Hawks STILL blew them out!

I keep going back to the over use of the term generational player. I still buy that while McDavid is a super star and he's probably generational in an pure offensive sense. He's not to me generational, there are a ton of holes in his game that he doesn't work at fixing. His work without the puck is shoddy, and there are too many times where he absolutely looks un engaged.
Crosby worked to fill the wholes in his game, that cat is never ever disengaged, and he plays a solid 200 foot game. Plus is generational offensively so Sid to me is Generational.
McDavid is not.
Fans saw that in its glory last night.

It's a five game series. That, by definition precludes the play-ins from being Stanley Cup Playoff series's.

How hard has MacKinnon worked on his game since entering the League, and how much has he improved on his first few seasons? It's not just Crosby that has obsessed about making his game perfect; McDavid has several players from which to learn how to elevate.

They used to have best of 3's back in the '70's.
Now who's showing their age.

It’s just fun to watch now that he’s not wearing a Flames jersey.

Oh I get that aspect of it for sure, just saw a lot of comments, especially from Oiler fans, that were obviously making him the scapegoat and giving the rest of that team a pass.

All very true.
But assuming every game is 50/50, winning the first game of a 5 game series should give you about a 69% chance of winning the series, and that is likely a better guess.
