I like this analogy.
Gaudreau - worth $200
traded for
NHL player - worth $100
Prospect - worth $50 (but in stocks, could grow to more than $200 or end up as $0)
1st round pick - worth $50 (but in stocks, could grow to more than $200 or end up as $0)
Plus you're walking down the street and pick up $150 that someone dropped (Hall)
If Tre plays his cards right it could be a long term win for the Flames.

Yeah, and he actually out produced Johnny this year, but I would bet that doesn't happen again over the next 5 years.

I highly doubt it but if I am Treliving I am asking about players like Couturier and Konecny as opposed to their prospect base.
I mean one of one Johnny for Konecny could look really bad for both teams. Johnny could go on to be a hart trophy candidate and score 100+pts for the Flyers where Konecny is a 50pt guy in Calgary.
If the Flames went for a one for one type deal maybe it makes sense but I think the Flyers try and hold on.
Not sure if this cap works but what about?
Gaudreau and Bennett
For
Konecny and Patrick
Depending on what Patrick would sign for the Flames likely save at least 1.5-2M in cap. The Flyers get the hometown star along with a gritty former top 4 pick that has long needed a change of scenery.
Flames get a solid top 6 winger on a long term team friendly deal and take a flyer on a former 2nd overall pick that has fought the injury bug his whole career.
I can see fans of both teams saying pass

It really depends on these playoffs. If he kills it, then I want to try and keep him for at least a year with Hall. If not, then trade him before the NTC kicks in.

I was thinking Gaudreau and Bennett for Konecny and Frost instead of Patrick. Patrick is such a massive question mark right now, and I'm a Frost fan.

I don't believe he is as untouchable as people make it seem. Sure he had a great season this year but his best season so far n his career is slightly better than Gaudreau's worst year. Gaudreau is for sure an upgrade on the ice for the Flyers over Konecny.
The value gets closer knowing he is three years younger and signed long term at a great price but Johnny has a great price for two more years too.
I believe not only is it possible to get Konecny, but that they would still have to add to it. Maybe not a whole lot but something.

I only quoted this to dispel this idea. Patrick has not fought an injury bug. An injury is something that, with treatment, will go away. Chronic migraines are not an injury. There is significant risk for those with chronic migraines to develop further neurological complications. Patrick has suffered from these things for years, so much so in the past year that he has been unable to pursue his chosen vocation. Patrick is damaged goods and I don't think would clear a physical to complete a trade. Until he is back to playing and conversation around Patrick should be limited to his health and not potential trades. As it is, he has a claim to a disability under the ADA, which makes his status that much more complex.

I think the Konecny ship has sailed. That fan base and coaching staff loves him.
Last year was the chance at Konecny / Provorov IMO. Gaudreau was coming off a great season and those two were RFAs.
But now both have had great seasons, and are locked up to good contracts.

He has fought the injury bug no way to deny that.
2013/14- Shoulder injury
2014/15 -Upper body injury
2015/16- Sports Hernia
2016/17- complications from previous sports hernia surgery
What he is dealing with right now is unrelated to maybe all of the above injuries. He was concussed at the end of the 18/19 season and hasn’t played since. The fact he missed more than 1/4 of his junior eligible games due to injury is also worth noting.
Right now we are talking about a player who missed 26% of his WHL games and 35% of his NHL games. Big big risk there. If he were to overcome these ailments then it could be a big reward.

Travis was on pace for 75 or so points this year. He just turned 23 years old and is locked up for 4 more years at 5.5M.
I dont think you could get him straight up for JG when the contracts vs value is factored in.
He is a key piece of a what has become a very good Flyer team, and is only starting to hit his stride.

If you aren't comfortable paying a player $10-12M, then maybe its time to start paying more attention to the CFL, because this is part and parcel of the NHL. If the Flames don't want to pay that, then they should sell the franchise and relocate. You can't compete or survive without paying your talent.

I am fine with paying talent, but for me it's about roster composition. I would just rather pay talent that plays premium positions, center, defense or goal.

I recall it being reported at the time that SJ was offering closer to $13mil per season. Can’t confirm 100% though.

Sharks offered him more money.
Flames offered Brad Richards more money than he took in NY
Oilers under Lowe offered every big name free agent more money they chose elsewhere.
If Hall wanted to maximize his earnings he would have signed with the Devils a year ago for 8 years
Stamkos certainly was offered more than the 8.5M he signed in Tampa for

If we do trade Gaudreau, and I am on board with the decision, as long as a top 6 center or a center with top 6 potential is part of the return.
Wingers even a RW shouldn't be the focus. We need more talent down the middle. We have lots of wingers. I would rather target a defenseman or a goalie over another winger.

I get that Konecny is younger and signed longer for a good price but there is still two years of Gaudreau on a great value, too. Plus he hit 99 points last year and was on pace for only a few less points than Konecny this year. Gaudreau is a far better right now than Konecny.
If the flames offered up Gaudreau for Konecny straight up the flyers would take that every time, imo

I really like Gaudreau, but I don't think the team can ultimately win with him as their offensive engine. His playoffs have been downright embarrassing for the most part.
I personally doubt he's interested in re-signing, but I also don't think it makes a lot of sense for the Flames either. I think it's time to move on, either this summer or during the season via trade, or once he hits free agency. Letting him walk as a UFA would be disappointing though as it'd be a huge loss for the franchise in terms of asset management.
Konecny obviously has a lot of value to Philly, but I think the swap is closer than some think. Johnny is a star and you have to give in order to get a piece as valuable as Gaudreau, and with the flat cap Gaudreau's relatively cheap cap hit is a big plus but Philly still needs to move out salary to make it work.
