Obviously Johnny will be available to all comers. Knowing him, and what is important to him, he's going to want to be in the NE US. I think you have to identify those teams and squeeze the best deal you can, recognizing his preference, in order:
Philadelphia
Rangers
Islanders
Devils
Boston
Washington
Pittsburgh
Columbus
Detroit
Buffalo
Work that list and make the best deal you can. These teams stand the best chance of resigning him and will probably accept the high price being asked because of that knowledge.

Do people even want to resign Gaudreau?
I don't, he's going to get paid an obscene amount. May as well trade him, get some assets and pay someone else.

At some point you are going to have to pay someone an obscene amount of money to score. The secret is to find the guys that want to be here long term and are willing to sign that deal. Gaudreau isn't one of those guys, and I suspect that we will be having similar discussions about Tkachuk in the future.

Tkachuk's a better player. Might as well start the rebuild if he has no interest signing here. He is 80% of Gaudreau's offense while being elite defensively and a physical force. Plus he drives the other team batty. He's our franchise player, many just don't see it yet. You pay him 8x 10m without even blinking an eye.

Tkachuk is going to be 24 when he gets his money Johnny will be 29. 5 years is a big age gap when looking at a long term big money deal. I feel better with Tkachuk at 31/32 than Johnny at 36/37

Honestly, after Gaudreau, Tkachuk is the next biggest American flight risk Treliving is going to have to deal with. The guy is in a position now where he can turn down all offers except the qualifying one and be a free agent at 25 years old (3 more seasons) and then sign a 7 year deal wherever he wants.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Chucky wants to head South as soon as he is able. It seems like trying to hold on to American born players is a real challenge for Canadian teams

Stamkos is signing in Toronto. McDavid can't wait to leave Edmonton. Eichel won't re-sign in Buffalo he wants to go back to Boston.
Apparently none of these guys will ever sign with their current teams because they all want to play at home. Tip, these players all sign with who will pay them the most money, every single one of them.

It could be just talk but I remember Treliving saying that Tkachuk wants to play his whole career in Calgary when they had a press conference for his bridge deal.
One big difference between Tkachuk and Johnny was the negotiation. By all accounts the Tkachuk negotiation was amicable and both sides worked together to get something done that makes sense. Treliving grinder Johnny down to the wire basically forcing him to holdout or take the best offer.
All signs are pointing to Johnny playing his last games as a Flame in the coming weeks and hopefully months. I think the Islanders, Flyers, Devils and Sabres will be all over getting a deal done and Treliving will get a good return.

That's the rub. Even if Gaudreau does want to stay here, are we all comfortable giving him the Panarin deal ($11.6m for 7 years). That's what it will potentially take to get him to stay here.
I wouldn't even though he has earned it.

Its really going to boil down to this playoff run. The future of this core will be shaped by these results. If the top line flutters out (depth has more to do with that than the top line themselves IMO, and thats a big issue too) I think it's all but guaranteed Gaudreau will be moved.
Say they push into the conference finals. I think solidifies this core and they run the contract out on Johnny.
But really, a poor result is really going determine this core moving forward.
And I also think no matter what, Gaudreau is not a Flame beyond his contract.

That's the thing everyone needs to understand. If you have a top player at a position you are going to have to pay. Whether it is Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Hall, or the next great draft pick who actually achieves expectations, you're going to have to pay them. If you aren't comfortable paying a player $10-12M, then maybe its time to start paying more attention to the CFL, because this is part and parcel of the NHL. If the Flames don't want to pay that, then they should sell the franchise and relocate. You can't compete or survive without paying your talent.

Wasn't Tkachuk wanting a 8-year deal and they only signed a short one so that Chucky wouldn't miss camp?
Tkachuk not a flight risk unless the Flames keep getting bounced in the 1st round IMO

IMO its not that they don't want to pay it, its that they have a good shot at signing Hall and can trade Johnny for a huge return. The loss of Johnny will hurt for sure but getting Hall softens the blow, especially if he plays to the top of his potential. The big thing that people need to realize is that the team can gain some huge assets for trading Johnny. My dream is Cozens, a potential #1C and the #8 pick from the draft, which would be another huge piece for the franchise.
Will losing Johnny hurt, yes but it can possibly help by acquiring other assets. Like trading a $10 bill for 3 $5 bills

Is there any way you could get Konecny for Gaudreau now, or has that ship sailed?
