I don't know what pagan god I need to pray to or what I need to sacrifice but if the Flames won first overall, traded down to 3 and 5(pipe dream I know, but I'd want 2 in the top 10 or 1 top 5 pick and one high end prospect). If they trade Johnny, I'd want a top 10 pick coming back for sure so the sabres would have to give up Cozens and 8 or the devils would have to give up any 2 of 7, 10, Foote, Smith, or one of their other good young players.
Just those 2 things alone would set the Flames up to be a good team for a long few years.

Hanifin and Andersson are already there to go along with Gio. Meanwhile Valimaki was on a short path towards achieving that before he got hurt.
We also have Kylington, Mackey and Yelesin all capable/soon to be capable of playing bottom pairing minutes.
I have no doubt Stone would re-sign for league minimum to stay on as the #7 as he wants to stay in Calgary.
Kinnvall and Poolman are far from a sure thing but they both have potential to be young NHL defensemen within the next couple years as well.
I know it is Tre’s MO to have a lot of defensive depth but what is this big rush to add another dman?
There are guys like Vatanen and Schultz as FA’s that could potentially be targeted if we move on from Brodie and Hamonic.
All this highly paid defensive depth over the years during the regular season has done what for us?
You know come trade deadline time Tre will add bodies back there anyways.
I think our priorities should be to acquire more higher skill depth upfront and to secure a 2nd goalie that can make a solid tandem.
I agree we do need to add one more guy on defence but with the expansion draft looming, and the fact I don’t see the Flames leaving Gio exposed even if it might be the right thing to do, it might not be the logical path to acquire one via trade of high value assets.
Gio
Hanifin
Andersson
Valimaki
??????
Kylington
Stone
Mackey
Yelesin
Poolman
Lerby
Kinnvall

Agreed, I'm hoping they can get Forbort to sign a 1 year show me deal. The price would be right and so would the term. He played 20~ games this year coming off a major injury. Plus with the flat cap I don't see him getting a long term deal that would satisfy him. On the Flames side, they get a vet stop gap for one year while they bring along Valimaki, Kylington, Yelesin and Mackey and maybe even Lerby.
Only down side is Forbort is just another LHD.

I really like Forbort a lot, but unless he can play the rights side and is willing to take a pay cut, we really need to move on.

I don't see any way you get 3 and 5 for 1. You easily get 3 and the Isles pick (19ish) and probably a 2nd rounder too, assuming Ottawa would want to move up to get Lafreniere. Maybe even more than one 2nd rounder. The Sens have 6 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this next draft.

I think the gap between 1 and 3 is bigger than the 19th and 30something pick.
Everything I have been hearing and watching is Lafreniere then a large gap then Stutzle and Byfield. Is Byfield a franchise center or is he more of a Monahan type? Lou on the FAN had Lafreniere in the “Matthews” level first pick so not generational but a franchise player type pick. Craig Button thinks he scores at least 60pts next year in the NHL. He is truly the consensus pick and back to back CHL player of the year. Going to cost a lot to move up.

Lindholm and Hanifin for Eichel. Yes please.
Lindholm + Bennett + picks even better.
I feel like that guy makes bad proposals just to get view.

Well if he's that much better than the next level then the Flames should just take him and not get too cute, LW or not.
A 60 point winger on an ELC would be a huge boost immediately

Here are some crazy ideas.
Gaudreau to CBJ for Jones
Backlund to MTL for 2x 2nd (STL/CHI)
Bennett & Jankowski to OTT for 1 x 2nd (their lowest of the 4) and a 4th
Offersheet Cirelli for 6 years @ 5m (cost would be a 1st and 3rd in '21)
Sign Lehner for 5 years @ 5m
Sign Hall for 7 years @ 7.5m
Sign Maroon for 1 year @ 850k
Re-Sign Mangiapane 2 years @ 2.5m
Re-Sign Forbot for 1 year @ 2m
Re-Sign Kylington for 1 year @ 850k
Re-Sign Gawdin, Quine and Rieder for 1 year each @ 700k
Hall - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Cirelli - Mangiapane
Lucic - Ryan - Dube
Maroon - Gawdin - Quine
Rieder
Giordano - Jones
Hanifin - Andersson
Forbort - Valimaki
Kylington
Lehner - Rittich
There would be a little over 360k in cap space

if you trade Gaudreau for Jones, you probably have to go 4 and 4 in the expansion draft, and that would suck
You're also back to having a lopsided balance of talent on D compared to forward

Trades can be made before the expansion draft, in that situation, I'd trade Gio after the season

You could leave the 38 year old captain unprotected. Sucks but its just business. Hopefully if he gets selected its right after a big Cup win.
Another option is to trade Hanifin (or Gio) to another team after the season but prior to the expansion draft, especially if Valimaki, Mackey and or Kylington have decent years.
Also, in Crowns mock line up hes offer sheeted Cirelli successfully ànd signed Hall so the balance hasnt really shifted to the D with a lack of top 6 forwards.
I for one am ALL for offer sheeting Cirelli

First of all, trading your heart and soul, and your leader is a dangerous move at best
Second, what if you can't make a good trade? Assuming you can make a complementary second trade is a precarious way to go into a first trade.

I don’t think Columbus trades Jones for Gaudreau ever

I appreciate the effort that went into this, but that is truly an awful lineup. You might as well just burn it all down and rebuild. Get all the picks you can because that is expansion team terrible. That third line should be a fourth. That fourth line should be in the minors. The defense is interesting, but can Valimaki even play his off side? This would be maybe a two line team, and then treading water and hoping to not get blown out of the building.

I missed Backlund being traded in that mock up.
Yeah, rather keep him and move Ryan if you successfully execute that Cirelli offer sheet.
Plus if you get Jones I dont even bother with Forbort. The top 4 is really strong and then you have young guys and cheap UFA signings to fill out the bottom pair

Expansion terrible? Do you just go around crapping ion any idea that isn't one of your terrible ones?
That lineup is pretty comparable to now except with massively upgraded defense and goaltending. That third line is our current 3rd line, Cirelli will be an upgrade on Backlund offensively very soon, but a downgrade defensively. So to claim a team similar offensively to what we have now but better at keeping pucks out, is expansion bad, is a really really terrible take.
You can disagree with my ideas all you want, but at least put some thought and reason into it.

even with replacing Forbort with a cheap bottom pair guy,, ther would not be enough space to keep Backlund over Ryan.

You guys need to revamp your definition of "expansion bad"
Its changed from the good ole days to "hey here is an instant Cup contender"
/sour grapes

You have the wrong LW going to Columbus for Jones.
If I’m kekalainen the only player I’m trading Seth Jones for is a 1C in the same age group, or younger, and better than the one I gave up to get him in the first place.

Yeah, next step would be to move Rittich then. If you're paying Lehner starter money to be the starter then I dont want a 2.7m million back up around and id rather have Backlund/cheaper back up/cheap ufa bottom pairing D than Ryan/Forbort/Rittich but thats just me.
