Johnny has a really close relationship with his family. It is tough for him to be on the other side of the continent in a different country with different social standards. I think it would help if Johnny would establish some roots in the Calgary area, but that just doesn't look like it is happening. He considers home to be the Philly area and has expressed a desire to play for the Flyers in interviews. It just doesn't seem likely that he will be a long-term Flame. I agree, if this is indeed his feelings, and the team would have a clear read on this, this off season is the one you make a trade.
|
You are speculating. Yes, in one interview on the spot in Philly said it would be cool to play for the team he cheered for growing up one day. Every player in the NHL would give the same response asked that question. He has also said he would like to play with Monahan his whole career and playing his entire career in Calgary would be cool. Not one of us knows what his mindset is, BT probably has an idea though. If he gets traded we know he wanted to go out East. It is just as likely he stays though. He likes the city, he has a close relationship with many young fans out here, hockey is almost a religion. Remember when that family pulled that prank on their kid saying Johnny asked to be traded and he was upset and then Gaudreau met up with him and told him he wasn't going anywhere? You could make that argument he wants to stay just as much as a passing comment to a radio host in a city he cheered for. We don't know.

His house in Avalon/Jersey Shore's 1 hour away from the Flyers' arena..
Each year he does a "cribs" edition with the Flames, he's in a new apartment
The bald guy who was hired as a broadcaster for sportsnet - who's very social and close with the team - is 100% convinced Johnny's leaving & that it's a done deal.
If he stays in Calgary - it's because Philly, NJ, NYR tell him he's not in their plans, the Flames owners would have to guarantee him a long career in Calgary and put him in the same class as Iginla, Giordano, & Backlund. It's just a matter of finding an acceptable trade IMO

Again, speculation. Do you know how many players live in their home area in the offseason? Most of them. Ryan Leslie knows about as much as Eric Francis which is nothing. Saying if he is in Calgary it is because those other teams don't want him is speculation on your part. I am really getting tired of people thinking their personal speculation are facts.

I disagree regarding Leslie. He's obviously quite close to the players on a personal level.
I find his hardline stance on the matter to be quite telling. He may not be forming his opinion based off anything concrete he's heard from Gaudreau, but I bet his opinion is shaped by what he's seen and heard from the players themselves.

Because they were all average players?
Not a single one of them was "excellent to very good." The best of that bunch is probably Skinner and he never move needle once for any team he's played for. Had some years where he scored some goals, but was on of those good guys on ####ty teams. Coincidence? Nope. The rest were/are support players, and some of them (Okposo and Komisarek) the punch line to jokes.

So you think Johnny Gaudreau flat out told Leslie he was not re-signing in Calgary? Ya, I find that extremely hard to believe. What I gathered from listening to that interview is that whatever Eric Francis says Leslie just agrees with him. I am simply saying we don't know and people shouldn't be saying that JG is definitely not staying until either he says it or he is traded and we find out that is why. As I pointed out before there is plenty of signs that point to him liking it here.

No, which is why I said: "He may not be forming his opinion based off anything concrete he's heard from Gaudreau, but I bet his opinion is shaped by what he's seen and heard from the players themselves."
Also for accuracy, Leslie said definitively that Gaudreau wasn't coming back here first, and Eric Francis agreed.
I agree however, we don't know. Of course we don't.
I think the general consensus amongst those that are exploring trade hypotheticals however is that IF Gaudreau's time is limited, the window to maximize his value is open and gets more complicated the longer we wait.
Personally, I think if Treliving gets an indication that Gaudreau wants to test free agency, I think he has to move him before his contract is up. Having Gaudreau walk with no assets returning would be a disaster.

Let me pick one of those guys out. Lars Eller. Great player. Has moved the needle on every team he's ever played for. Clutch in the playoffs for Montreal and Washington. Scored the Cup-winning goal and is what I would call an elite second-line centre. And he's not even close to being the best guy on that list.

He literally answered your question in the very same post and you intentionally omitted it when you quoted him. Shoot it down all you want but if Francis just said it I could easily dismiss it put of hand. Leslie on the other hand is not a sensationalist and definitely not a yes man. I believe what he says because he believes it. Don't like it? Fine. You don't have to. But Those of us that do believe Leslie's take have rationally explained it many times over and really shouldn't have to explain themselves repeatedly. Especially since he did and you deliberately cut the entire thought process of his post in half to make this post.

To be fair I edited my post to expand on my thoughts. I think the timing worked out so dissentowner was already replying while I was adding.

Actually I didn't, when I quoted it that is what he wrote. He went back and edited the rest after I had responded or while I was.

People can believe what they want. I myself make JG trade proposals on here because I do believe he will be dealt. I just don't think we should talk like it is an absolute until we know.

Well we all have different perspectives on judging talent and contribution. You seem to get enamored with certain players, especially role players, and think a lot more of them than anyone else (Derek Ryan and David Jones for example), which is fine. Youth and inexperience has protected you from becoming jaded about players. I find most of these players as middling, easily replaceable, and nothing overly special. I reserve terms like "elite" for those that truly are. Just my take on things.

The biggest thing is not to let johnny walk for nothing. And for once get as much value extracted if you have to trade him. A lot will fall on the teams performance if they get playing again.
If like I said previously they whimper out of the play in, expect massive changes regardless of any perceived notions of Johnny testing FA or not.
If they put on a good run and go 3 rounds deep then we can call off the speculation. Or can we?
Either way. Its not an absolute but you can also not dismiss it.

Don’t speculate in the trade speculation thread.
